McFarlane’s purchase of the Eclipse assets only entitle him to the Eclipse versions. The Heap, Airboy, etc. are in the public domain and anyone can use those characters, just not the Eclipse versions.

I thought that McFarlane bought the rights to the Eclipse characters back in the late 1990s? Didn’t The Heap appear in Spawn? It’s been a long time since I read that, though.

1953 may not have been a “milestone” year for comics, but it was still a million times better than 2009. Look at all the variety there was back then. Plus: EC, S&K, self-contained stories that actually made sense, proper mass-market distribution, no continuity, no “universes”, no crossovers, no “events”, no Photoshop and no fanboys. Sounds like Heaven!

Yes – although I don’t know how they’d fit over someone’s nose.

The Dell/Gold Key split has been written by people far better versed in comic book history than me. I’ll see if I can find a link to an article and post it.

Jeremy – when I do these, I’ll never hit all of the events of a given year. It’s great to chime in with other highlights.

There are some other stuff happening in 1953: The debut of Patsy & Her Pals, Atlas’ starting up of Homer Hoope & Wendy Parker.

Frontline Combat was cancelled. Panic was launched, & EC’s sci-fi books merged.

Moonstone currently has the rights to the AIRBOY characters, with Chuck Dixon continuing the writing he did when the title was at Eclipse.
