He also did good work in the old Vertigo anthology titles - Flinch and the various genre one's they did.
Those books are pretty damn good, they should do collections, at least a 'best of' - or you can find them in the cheap bin.

I suppose I have to see more of his work, like, say, Congo Bill.

It's great until the part with the giant monkey in the last issue.

I only show sexy girls in the context of the review, FGJ. I have, you know, integrity.

I didn't like Zezelj's art on Desolation Jones or that thing he did around that time (so sue me, I can't remember it), but I liked the latest issue of Northlanders and the preview art for Luna Park looks good. I suppose I have to see more of his work, like, say, Congo Bill.

No pictures of sexy girls this week?

You suck Burgas!

I haven’t seen too much of Zezelj’s art, but I’ve never been too impressed with it.

Fuck, you suck!

Seriously though, you really don't like his stuff?
I think he's quite amazing.
He did art on anold Vertigo mini 'Congo Bill' - crossing the 90's politics and genocides of the Congo region with the tale of a giant monkey!!! - that looked really, really good.

Eliot Johnson: By the time she gets to Victorian Era England, you'll see what the over-arcing plot was. It took me completely by surprise, but looking back, you'll notice that all the clues were there.

No, only Didio could accomplish that!

It's time to face the truth, I'm afraid: Uncanny X-Men is cursed.

Whoever dares attempt to pen the series is doomed to mediocre results. It's bested Casey, Austen, Milligan, Brubaker, and now Fraction.

Hell, you could include Alan Davis and Chris Claremont (the second time around, at least) on the list as well.

I haven't yet caught up on Madame Xanadu (I'm through about issue 7), but the book started with her in Camelot, progressed through to Genghis Khan's Mongolia then to Marie Antoinette's France. So the entire thing is a historical tour de force.

I guess the theme of the book, from a character standpoint, is Mme Xanadu constantly losing everyone around her and having to start over. The Phantom Stranger keeps popping up and she feels a kindred spirit in him, but he's very cold to her, etc etc. Through where I am, there's not a whole lot in terms of a over-arcing plot (but it could be something subtle I'm missing), but there's been a whole lot in terms of cool stories about certain eras of history. And it's been beautifully drawn by Amy Reeder-Hadley.

I'm not really up on DC characters so who does Kid Eternity recruit at the end. At first I assumed it was Jesus (which would have been awesome) but I have no clue who that guy is (the rest I know from JLU).

I get that Doom sees himself that way, but it's kind of odd that WE see him that way - I'm not sure how they would do it, unless possibly they could show the beaten-down Doom looking at himself in the mirror, seeing the grand monarch. The page we see seems to show Doom as he would be seen by an outside observer, even though it's obviously how he sees himself. I just think it was odd how he was shown.

I don't know what Shatterstar's current deal is, but I don't care too much, as long as David writes a good story.

Omar: I'm not sure what the deal is with Madame Xanadu, because I skipped the first ten issues. This story takes place in the 1930s and the 1490s, so I'm not sure if it's a good place to find out what she's doing these days. I just like the story so far, and of course the art is nice.

Brian: Yes, that's Sinead O'Connor and it is Daddy I'm Fine. A fine tune from her 2000 album Faith and Courage.

Jbird: My point about Fraction is not that he can't write the characters well, because he seems to be able to write some of them okay. My point is that he doesn't seem to be terribly inspired about writing the book except when he brings in certain plots. If that's the case and he's not getting interference from the editors, why isn't he just writing stories about the X-Club? I'd read that book? When I write the X-Men (it's going to happen, Joey Q!), if I'm not hampered by editorial, I'm not going to write about characters I have no interest in. Why would I? Unless there's the aforementioned editorial interference. Fraction seems to be writing characters, like Karma, who don't interest him. Therefore they show up and do nothing. Why bring them in?

Why is it so hard to believe that Fraction just can't write the X-Men as well as he can other characters? Neither can Brubaker or Ellis, as demonstrated, and it's hard to find someone who reads these books who doesn't love one or the other. It doesn't mean that Fraction's metamorphosed into a bad writer - or is being kneecapped by editors - when he can't write a certain other character as well as he can write Danny Rand.

The X-Men, honestly, seem like they would be HARD to write. So much backstory, so much absolute regrettable ridiculousness in the origins and secret origins and secondary mutation origins of the characters, and so many 'fan-favorite' characters that no team is going to satisfy anyone, really.

'Tec is awesome for the art, slow on the story - but I think it has to be since ostensibly the masses could pick this up. I liked that (so far, at least) it stays clear of the who's wearing the cowl. I feel like I missed a lot of Kate's backstory somewhere. I like that Rucka lets Williams tell so much of the story; the spread of her condo informs the character as much as anything in the script.

Unknown Soldier is really clicking now. Your thoughts above sum it up really well.

I liked Zodiac, mostly for Fox's Paul Pope meets Brandon Graham stylings, but also because it's the kind of Casey story I enjoy. I didn't buy the Lethal Legion mini that came out last week, but from reading a review of it on CBR main, it seems like it has the same starting plot point. Is that true? And if so, is it stupid or brilliant? Because I know I'm not buying a Frank Tieri book, and I doubt many of his fans are buying a Joe Casey and indy artists one.

In Secret Warriors you again have to wonder who gives a shit about, y'know, the Secret Warriors.
Just make it a Nick Fury book. That's who I want to see.

Greg, Battle for the Cowl was only 3 issues long so I think it beats the decompressed crap that the Fables Crossover was.

What's the premise or hook for the current Madame Xanadu title? I know who she is -- a minor mystic with prognostication talents, cheated Death at cards to gain immortality, and more amoral than Doctor Fate but less so than John Constantine -- but what's this particular book playing out with the character or setup?

Loved Madame Xanadu this month! Much like Tec, I had to read it twice, cause the first time I just kept staring at the pictures.

Cheers,

Hang on, hang on - get back to the part where Shatterstar's in an X-book again. I find that to be curiously intriguing. What's that guy's deal nowadays? Last I saw he was starring in a random Liefeld miniseries, now he's, well, based on the cover, I'd say he's up for a featured part in "Blackest Night"?

Well, Doom sees himself still as the grand, if fallen king. The reality is he's an old man who's lost everything, including his mind.

It seemed pretty clear, thought at times the art didn't construe this as well as it should have
