hi Ysabet, thanks for stopping by! I believe in the omake to volume 1 Yazawa makes the announcement about the actual "serialization" of the series, so I don't actually agree with Michelle and Melinda's assessment above. I don't think the "grand plan" actually happened until after the first 2 solo chapters were published (for example, Nana K. is all scared that the other Nana will be picked for the main story in the omake! Other evidence: the chapters in the second volume start from #1 in spite of the two chapters volume 1).

I don't want to try to jump in with a lot of commentary here without going back and rereading the first two volumes (especially since I tend to forget what happens in which book), but I'm excited about this project!

The difference between the first volume and the rest of the series intrigues me a bit, even though I don't think the series really gets going until volume 2; I seem to recall hearing that Yazawa-sensei initially intended to tell the stories of their lives in parallel rather than intertwining them, and I wish I could remember where I read that so I could find out if it's true. (I certainly don't want to swear to it.) It would be such a profoundly different story, and while I'm infinitely glad we got the story we did, I always wonder a little what it would have been like.

May be back later with a more specific comment. But again, yay!

@Melinda: I've always been interested in the differences between Hachi's and Jun's relationship versus Hachi's and Nana's relationship. While Jun's certainly known Hachi longer, it's almost as if she doesn't actually "know" Hachi. The problem is that Jun thinks she knows what is best for Hachi, when, in fact, none of that matters to Hachi. Like you said, Hachi's searching fervently for who she is, all the while only knowing that she wants to be loved.

And, I agree that Nana understands Hachi much better because they're both searching for that -- they want to be someone else's most important person. While Nana doesn't seem that way on the surface, I think her rejection issues are a direct result of her past and, subconsciously, that influences her need to be loved. And I think Hachi is just so easily capable of loving that it draws Nana in, like a gravitational pull that she has no control over. And that's the crux of their relationship -- they've somehow become the other's most important person despite all their differences.

@Lorena, I'm sure my perspective on Jun and "reason" is affected a lot by the fact that I tend to identify with Hachi. I think what makes this issue so complex (and Ai Yazawa so great for portraying it as such) is that in reality (in my view) "reason" is an imperfect concept. Jun may indeed have a lot to offer Hachi (I think it's clear that she does), *but* they have different priorities for themselves and their lives, so one person's reason is not necessarily the key to achieving another person's goals. Hachi is searching so hard for who she is and what she wants, and the only thing she is sure of is that she wants to be loved--that she wants to be someone's most important person. It almost doesn't matter whose. I definitely think she makes mistakes--*huge* ones even--in terms of achieving her goal, but I understand why she makes them, and I'm not sure Jun always does, so it's not possible for her to always know what is really best for Hachi. Weirdly, I think Nana understands Hachi better, and that is why it is easier for them to achieve the kind of balanced friendship between them that Hachi and Jun really don't have.

I think I'm getting way off point, but talking about this stuff is just TOO MUCH FUN. :D

@Danielle: Oh, I think it's perfectly appropriate to be hard on Ren. He and Nana have an all-too-complicated (and, at times, dangerous) relationship with one another. They always struck me as co-dependent and they enable the other's dark side through their love and distance (both physically and psychologically).

@Melinda: Well, it *is* hard being the voice of reason, but I think it's a good counter-balance to Hachi, who's just so happy-go-lucky and follows wherever "love" leads her. I don't think it does any good for Hachi, except in a "I told you so" sense. The problem is, Hachi doesn't often learn from her mistakes, especially when it comes to men.

@Michelle: Well, Ren always struck me as a Sid Vicious type, only Nana wasn't willing to be his Nancy. He's self-destructive and weak and, yet, always expected to be there for Trapnest. It's the request for his strength as a musician that becomes his undoing, in my opinion. It's simply an overwhelming, Herculian task for him, especially when he's lost his source of strength -- Nana. Of course, I've gotten ahead of myself (and the part of the series we're looking at). But, maybe that's all just an impression from people I've known in the punk scene and the music I listen to?

@Melinda: Well, it *is* hard being the voice of reason, but I think it’s a good counter-balance to Hachi, who’s just so happy-go-lucky and follows wherever “love” leads her. I don’t think it does any good for Hachi, except in a “I told you so” sense. The problem is, Hachi doesn’t often learn from her mistakes, especially when it comes to men.

@Michelle: Well, Ren always struck me as a Sid Vicious type, only Nana wasn’t willing to be his Nancy. He’s self-destructive and weak and, yet, always expected to be there for Trapnest. It’s the request for his strength as a musician that becomes his undoing, in my opinion. It’s simply an overwhelming, Herculian task for him, especially when he’s lost his source of strength — Nana. Of course, I’ve gotten ahead of myself (and the part of the series we’re looking at). But, maybe that’s all just an impression from people I’ve known in the punk scene and the music I listen to?

I don't think I feel strongly enough about Ren to be tough on him. Even by v11, which is as far as I've read, he has yet to make much of an impression. But perhaps that is for another installment of The NANA Project.

Hi Lorena!

I know I'm too hard on Jun. She *is* the voice of reason, but I think to a fault? Just as it's not helpful in life to approach everything in life from an emotional viewpoint, I think the same applies to a purely rational one. Obviously Hachi errs towards the former, and Jun tries hard to balance that in a "it's for your own good" kind of way. I just think sometimes it is too harsh and rigid to actually do any good.

Mostly, though, I'm just thrilled you've joined in here. :D

hi Lorena -- thanks for joining us! I probably just thought up this crazy idea just so I could have an excuse to reread the books. :-)

I'm pretty tough on Ren I'll admit, but I do agree he is much more difficult to figure out (likewise, Yasu remains a complete mystery to me most of the time), while Shoji is a pretty transparent kind of guy. This would be a good thing unless you are Nana K. and can't seem to figure out the simple relationship-type things right away (but then who can?)
