It’s so interesting seeing David Mazzucchelli’s style here when placed next to “Born Again”. I love how he adapts his style to fit both stories.

@DanCJ – I’ve only got one of the single issues,and it’s been a long time since I looked at it. The TPB I have is from the late 80’s early 90’s, the coloring seemed pretty good to me, did they recolor it more recently. Did Richmond Lewis do it? – Thx

I think there’s only one version of the colouring in the TPB version so you’ll be looking at the same one as me. The higher production values of the colouring in the TPB are nicer, but I prefer the colour choices in the issues. Also the colourist in teh TPB added patterns to wallpaper and duvet covers a couple of times which I find very jarring.

I immediately recognised it as satire, but the whole “Batman if he was REAL” got played out about halfway into the first volume of The Authority. It would’ve been a great idea in 1995 – and timelier, as DC was in the middle of their period of deconstructing Miller’s vision of Batman in DKR then – but, really, how many “Batman is really a psychopath” plays on the character do we need?

(‘sides, I always thoought the point was that it was acknowledged that 99.99999% of the population would have gone insane, but that Bruce’s willpower keeps him somewhat stable and functional. And that’s Batman’s superpower.)

Still one of the best Batman stories ever told….I loved how the new films sorta took a cue from this series in how to treat Gordon as a character.

I always liked this sequence (and the whole of Year One) because it shows how much preparation goes into Batman making it look effortless. I gotta sneak in, knock out the guards, fix the spotlight, etc….. brilliant.

Frank Miller is still a genius – but now his only interest in Batman is for self-satirical purposes. As a satire, “All-Star Batman” is very good; but that wasn’t what DC had promised the series would be, and many fans never warmed up to the biting satire that Miller served.

I personally enjoy seeing what a de-glamourized Batman would REALLY be like, which is the whole point of “All-Star Batman”… he would be a borderline psycho, brutal and completely antisocial. Once I figured out what Miller was going for with the series, everything made sense. It’s not for everybody’s tastes, granted, but it’s still a solid satirical series.

that is one of the moments i liked about batman year one. frank miller other story that proves he gets the dark knight and also shows what batman was like starting out giving notice that a new sheriff is in gotham

One of my all time favorite comic book moments. I’m not a really big Batman fan, but Year One is one of the finest comic book stories I’ve ever read. Am I the only one who greatly prefers this to The Dark Knight Returns?

Mazzucchelli is at the top of his game here. The perfect blend of his own style and Toth.

I love this comic so much that I got my mom to read it. Hey, she’s the one that asked “What is it that you love so much about these things?”. She liked it ok, never asked for another one though…

It’s one of my favorite moments, too. I loved the way Miller/Mazzucchelli used the black panels throughout the story.

dr matt > Yes, it’s really sad. Maybe growing older + 9/11 + not caring anymore about characters he doesn’t own contributed to make Frank Miller the way he is today.

However, Miller’s work has always been satirical/grotesque. For example, DKR could be perceived as “Frank Miller gets away with (Batman’s) murder”.
