Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool AND Green Lantern?

Apparently, that's the case, as Ryan Reynolds was reportedly cast today as the lead in the upcoming Green Lantern film.

Oddly enough, his upcoming Deadpool film is scheduled to be released the same year as his Green Lantern movie (2011).

What do you folks think - can Ryan Reynolds pull off Hal Jordan?

I don't know... He might be tempted to make Hal Jordan likeable

The people who have decided that Hal has no personality won't be convinced by a movie.

Obviously playing both Hal and Deadpool will be a tough task, almost as tough as playing Agent Smith, Elrond, and V. I don't think anybody could pull off either task.[/sarcasm]

Not knowing anything about Reynolds, I don't know whether he would make a good Hal (except that he looks like enough like Hal to work.) That said, I don't think it would be that hard for him to pull it off.

I'd rather see him as the Flash, but I'll watch Ryan Reynolds in anything, so I'm in.

Bradley Cooper was robbed!

But, Reynolds is cool, so it's all good.

Deadpool is surely postponed. It doesn't have a script or director, and now it's short a leading man.

I think he'd make a decent Hal. He'd make a much better Flash, though....

(And Justin Timberlake was up for the role? Seriously? I mean, I loved him on SNL and all but.... seriously? Now, Bradley Cooper I can see, but.... Timberlake? Seriously? Wow....)

Why Not?

He did Wade Justice. Relax I said Wade not Deadpool.

Hmmm. I remember a few years ago that Corey Reynolds was trying to get Green Lantern to the screen, with himself as John Stewart. I guess that went by the wayside.

As long as it wasn't Nathan Fillion. Great actor, but SO wrong for the role. I'm pleased with this though.

given WB history of slowness with getting dc films off the ground and since dead pool was given the go after wolverine was out . i would say Ryan can do deadpool first then Green Latern and prove if he can handle being Hal. and then maybe if he is sucessful as Hal then maybe WB will finaly have him be the flash

I still think 5-10 years ago this would have been Nathan Fillion's gateway to superstardom, but I like Reynolds and think he can nail this if he puts in the effort and reins in the sleaziness he gave Van Wilder/Hannibal King/half his roles. My only misgiving is that I think it's weird when actors play two different characters in two different comic books movies (admittedly a nitpick). I found it distracting that Rebecca Romijn was both Mystique and Joan the Mouse, for instance (more distracting than an actress who looks like Rebecca Romijn normally is, I mean).

Oh, c'mon, all the best portrayals of GL are basically Cap'n Mal with a power ring.

But they gave it to one of the other guys from Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place, so all is well.

I'm also looking forward to the inevitable JLA movie, with Reynolds playing every role.

"I’m also looking forward to the inevitable JLA movie, with Reynolds playing every role."

Ryan Reynolds, the superhero movie version of Alec Guiness.

I just want to know if he's going to sucker punch a few authority figures? A general, a cop, maybe the President.

And I was hoping The Coop would get the part. I could totally see him punching random people for no reason.

"Deadpool is surely postponed. It doesn’t have a script or director, and now it’s short a leading man."

I can't see why people would be disappointed by this. Considering how bad Wolverine apparently was do you think Fox was going to give Deadpool the A-List treatment?

can reynolds be a douche bag like hal? in all his movies he's usually pretty likeable. bradley cooper woulda been my choice out of the three.

I found it funny that, not once but twice, Marvel found themselves with an exhausted franchise, so they decided "I know, let's make one last movie, but let's also introduce Ryan Reynolds as one of our c-list characters. The audience will fall in love with Reynolds' character and demand he get a franchise of his own!" It didn't work with Hannibal King in "Blade 3" and it didn't work with Deadpool in "X-Men Origins".

There are some actors I would have chosen over him, but the director has a good head on his shoulder and DC/WB does seem to be serious about making their movies as well as possible so I'm gonna do my best to keep an open mind and hope for the best.

Sure, why not, assuming the movie is well written, well directed, well cast, and is considered important enough by WB that it doesn't get re-edited to contain a giant spider end boss, all of which is a goddamn long shot

I am going with Reynolds being an interesting choice. "Cocky flyboy" is certainly within his range, so you figure that is the direction Campbell is going with Hal Jordan. Also, you figure there is going to a lot of reacting to weird stuff required. Reynolds does that very well. That is probably the right choice.

You can almost see him reacting to Abin Sur with his patented bemused smirk.

I like Reynolds, but I think he would have been better suited personality-wise to play Guy Gardner

NO NO NO.... i think they are making a big mistake this ryan reynolds and the others they mention... timberlake? come on. ill admit ryan can be in the movie maybe do a cameo as "guy gardner" that would be cool, i think he fits that but not hal or kyle. i just hope they dont mess this up like superman returns.

sure. why not?

As for Mr. Reed, have you got a "thing" for Ryan Reynolds? ;-)

My initial reaction was NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Eh, we'll see what happens. I didn't care too much for Heath Ledger as the Joker either (which seems to be a common thing people are saying, I'm guessing for the next twenty years of bad casting choices that will be the caveat: "...but Heath played the Joker...").

To be honest, no faith this will be anything more than a generic, sci-fi-filled superhero origin movie at best, no matter who's in the main role.

But they gave it to one of the other guys from Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place, so all is well.

Somewhere, Richard Ruccolo is quietly sobbing.

Poor Pete, passed over again...

Wow. I'm the only person who reads Ryan Reynolds as a snide, cocky, nasally douchebag? I could see him as Guy Gardner, but he is all wrong for Hal Jordan. Jordan has always had a cool confidence, to me, and Reynolds is always trying WAY too hard.

So much for my seeing the Green Lantern movie.

He plays different kinds of characters in comedies (Van Wilder is very different than Waiting) and Rom Coms (the Friendship movie that Comedy Central is showing every hour seems different than the new movie he has out with Sandra Bullock) so no reason he can't play different characters in action/hero films.

Theoretecaly, GL will be a straight forward square jawed action movie. Deadpool is being talked about more as absurbdest comedy.

And why shouldn't he play a bunch of superheroes...he's married to the Black Widow, afterall.

Then he's perfect for the role of Hawkeye in the Avengers movie!

I dunno, Anonymous, if there's room on my man-crush list for Ryan Reynolds, but I do enjoy watching his films. He is the master of the reaction shot, I'm pretty sure.

I find this very strange as there are few actors out there less likable.

His mastery with reaction was why I thought he would be perfect for the Flash, who always seems to be responding to actions by others. Well ... That plus the wise-acre sense of humor.

Green Lantern always struck me ... (I hate to use this word after "Cry for Justice") ... more proactive. But like I said earlier, I think Hal Jordan is within Reynolds range and Martin Campbell has earned the benefit of the doubt in terms of casting.

IMHO Nathan Fillon would make a pretty good Guy Gardner. Maybe not entirely in keeping with stuff like brain-damaged Justice League Guy, but more like current Guy.

Just a thought.

So ... with Reynolds off the list is Adam Brody now everyone's favorite for the Flash if that movie ever gets out of development hell?

Man, I think Ryan Reynolds is pretty perfect. He mostly gets stuck with cocky roles, but he's a hell of an actor beyond that. You should his intensity in the Amityville Horror remake, the movie's ho-hum, but he's the best thing in it. He also plays three distinct and emotional roles in a small movie called The Nines. The dude can handle it. I may be one of the few people who was stoked about the idea.

I can see it. Reynolds is a good actor, likeable but smarmy, just like Hal. Question for the panel, though - who's gonna play Pieface? (AND DON'T TELL ME PIEFACE ISN'T IN THE MOVIE!)

Assuming they don't also cast Ryan Reynolds as the Flash, I would go instead for Neil Patrick Harris, who voiced the character in the New Frontier cartoon, and is made of win and awesome.

Bill, that is a good call.

I was pulling for Timberlake. I think he could pull off the swaggering fighter jock fearless test pilot stuff without coming across as a dick. A bit young, though, as my image of Hal is always with the grey temples. I started reading comics in the 60s, and most comic book characters either felt like me, or they felt like my dad. Hal was definitely in the Dad camp.

Reynolds certainly looks like the post-Neal Adams Hal.

And there is only one man alive who can play Guy Gardner: John Cena.

@the Mutt: Cena? Really? Really?!? Maybe as Killowogg, but he's too huge for Guy.

John Cena can't even play a wrestler without sucking.

Anyway, I'm hoping they can convince Alan Rickman to play Sinestro. Yeah, not gonna happen. But it would be cool.

I’d rather see him as the Flash, but I’ll watch Ryan Reynolds in anything, so I’m in.

Why?
What has he been in that was actually worth watching?
I use him as I used Freddie Prinze Jr - if he appears in it, you know it's shit, or they would have cast someone better.

He turned Van Wilder into the only watchable National Lampoon movie since... what? Vacation? And I thought he was great as Berg in the best "traditional" sitcom of the last, like, dozen years, in Two Guys & a Girl. And you're going to laugh at me, but I really liked him in Definitely, Maybe. And the Nines. And a lot of other stuff.

Just Friends is a pile of shit, though, I'll give you that. But the reaction shots...!

IMHO Nathan Fillon would make a pretty good Guy Gardner.

Yeah. When I first heard Nathon Fillon's name attached to Green Lantern I assumed he'd be Guy Gardner - or maybe a villain. I don't know any GL villains - except for All Star Batman and Robin (the boy wonder)

No idea why Reynolds is so popular with the comic book crowd. His sit com was poor and his films have been mostly downright horrible. The last thing I've seen him in, Adventureland, was an unoriginal and shaky construct held up only by the weak pull of nostalgia. Wait... now I guess I see why they like him (semi-obscure television failure + nostalgia fueled projects)

I don't have a dog in this hunt. I think Ryan Reynolds is fine, but I've never paid to see a movie he was in, nor have I seen an episode of his TV series.

However ....

According to IMDB, "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" ran 81 episodes. That is not a smash hit, but having a network TV show run four years is an achievement. It would be the highlight of the resume for a lot of people who actually earn a living in the entertainment business.

Yeah, but the measure of success is hitting a hundred episodes so that you get syndication - then that baby apparently pays for life.

@FunkyGreenJeruslem:

True, but it is kind of like hitting the lotto for "only" a million dollars. You aren't retiring, but you are certainly driving a nicer car. You could probably find someone willing to trade their soul for 81 episodes of network TV in every Starbucks on the West side of Los Angeles.
