I pretty fell in love with the foodie manga genre with Yakitate! Japan and it’s very gratifying to see this older (yet still currently being published) manga about cuisine being translated and published here. It’s too bad that Viz is going for this categorical reprinting. If the anime is anything to go by, I would have liked to have seen the foie gras vs. monk fish (i think) liver in the original manga.

Science of course will tell you that no human can discern the terroir of damn near everything like they assert in Oishinbo, Mr. Ajikko and the other foodie manga. But who cares?

I just received the saké volume (vol. 2?) for my birthday—as I’m a rather large fan of better examples of the beverage. It was so fun for me to read (and educational!), that I’m now highly interested in reading the rest of the series. Glad to hear that other volumes continue the fun; t’s easy to see why the series is so popular.

I only wish there was a volume called Oishinbo: Steak and Grilled Meat.

Okay, reading this is making me hungry. This manga and your review of it have both done their jobs; I want to read the manga, and more importantly, I want sushi. I don’t care that it’s expensive food that is filling for no more than an hour afterwards and often comes with avocado ( a foodstuff I loathe ), I crave raw fish/crustacean/mollusk wrapped in rice and seaweed, dammit!
