The Top 70 Most Iconic Panels in Marvel History – Day 2

Okay, in case you didn’t see yesterday’s intro, the concept is that each day up to and including the 24th of August, I’ll be posting three iconic panels from Marvel Comics’ 70-year history (panels meaning any single enclosed drawing, including single page splashes). On the 24th, you folks will get a chance to pick your Top 10 out of the 70, I’ll tabulate the votes and I’ll debut the Top 70 Most Iconic Panels in Marvel Comics History on August 31st. I’d go with Daredevil # 181 as my favorite.

Nothing like a brutal death-stroke by none other than THE Frank Miller.

While not my personal favorite, this list would be remiss without the Wolverine-in-the-sewers panel from The Dark Phoenix Saga.

daredevil 181 gets my vote so far. for that proves how nasty bullseye is and why any woman who tries to date daredevil needs to rethink doing so for daredevil is bad news for romances

That Daredevil panel is great, definetly a Top 10. Man, there are so many panels, my favorite historic panel is that from Avengers # 4, where Captain America’body is found, and my favorite recent panel (in fact is a splash page) from Annihilation # 6, where Nova kills Annihilus pulling his guts out through his mouth, that’s awesome.


The panel where Reed hears about Sue’s miscarraige in the issue with Doc Ock. The panel where MJ reveals that she knows Peter is Spidey. From New X-Men, where Xavier holds a smoking gun after shooting Cassandra. Also, the panel where Cyclops euthanizes Ugly John (the mutant that he and Wolverine were rescuing when Cassandra attacked them). The panel where Daredevil slaps Nuke’s body down on Urich’s desk from Born Again.

Who did the colors on that Daredevil panel? Really beautiful, given the pulp it was printed on.

Can one of you folks who know about such things give me the skinny on that horizontal stripe? What’s the technique? Did Miller “draw” it? It really turns that panel up to 11.

Great other suggestions. That panel where Goliath’s arm reaches out to grab Captain America in Avengers 4 is classic. Or was Hank Giant-Man then? Another great panel is the Vision reaching through the wall as Wasp screams in his first appearance (Avengers 57?).

Well, one of those will be my #1 pick.

Actually, Miller only did the breakdowns on that issue, Klaus Janson did the pencils, ink, and (hey Mutt!) colors. I don’t think Janson gets enough credit for his outstanding body of work.

Can one of you folks who know about such things give me the skinny on that horizontal stripe? What’s the technique? Did Miller “draw” it? It really turns that panel up to 11.

Educated guess — it was almost certainly something Klaus Janson added. Probably as some kind of acetate overlay. You didn’t see it very often back then because it had to be all trimmed out and registered by hand, it meant a huge amount of extra work both at the inking and paste-up stage and also at the printer’s. Today it can be done with a mouse click in Photoshop, so you see a lot more of those kind of effects.

If I remember correctly, Frank Miller befriended a lot of the ladies working as color separators at the printer and would go and actually work on it with them. I forget where I read that, maybe in the Eisner/Miller interview book. He had a lot of similar effects throughout his run on the book.

Two Captain America panels I haven’t seen anyone mention yet:

1) Cap cuts off Baron Blood’s head with his shield
2) Cap stands against Thanos

My favorite thing about the Elektra panel is Bullseye showing off his toosh. No way is that a comfortable way to kill someone.

I’m pretty sure that in the story, Elektra is jumping Bullseye from behind, but he anticipates it and sticks her. So while still pretty much anatomically impossible, it’s almost plausible from a storytelling perspective!

I rechecked the books because I remembered it involving dialogue and being dramatic and stuff. If anyone cares (doubtful), he already got her with a flying card and in the panel before he has picked her up, facing her. So, to strike that pose, he would likely have to physically throw her up in the air, which is kinda plausible because of her arm’s position. They’d be by her side otherwise.

(I’m guessing Toth would disapprove of this panel (and page) transition).

All of which means that, in all likelihood, Bullseye physically picked her up and caught her with her si. Which is the creepiest way to kill anyone, ever.

But it does make for a dramatic panel.

The Vision crying, of course.

Can spreads count as single panels? Like Kibry’s four-page Nick Fury fightorama? or George Perez’s double-page reliquary from Future Imperfect?

One that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is Ben crushing Dr. Doom’s hands at the climax of the Battle of the Baxter Building.

Baron Karza ripping free of the dead husk of Argon to start his second reign as the boss of Hydra, love all those FX!

My heart skipped a beat when I read that panel – I’m thinking of the last panel
on the second to last page, where he says – All I know is I’ve finally got my hands on you and nothing can save you now!
That you had to turn the page to see what would happen next really made it zing, as it added to the excitement of the image.

And I also like the FF – cosmic ray image, but where’s the distinct sound Tac, Tac, Tac?

Im really mad nobody mentioned Bulleyes gleeful smile on that panel. Ive never actually read that issue but that is horrific.
