I seem to recall the text piece concept was inspired by the notes in Goldman’s “Abridging” of Morgenstern’s Princess Bride. I think that PAD mentioned it in a BID maybe…or I could be completely wrong.

I also seem to recall the reason that PAD didn’t do the follow up Aquaman series at the time was that the then editor mis-interpreted the conception part in AC as being a Mary-esque virgin birth type thing…rather than a visit from an immortal wizard.

I’m not talking about the invasion of Kuwait, Jcush. When I wrote this, I was referencing the fact that the second George Bush claimed that Saddam Hussein was a threat to the United States, when, in fact, he wasn’t.

Yeah, 2005 Burgas was kind of a douchebag. I found out about Red Sonja and Maroto long ago, but not when I wrote this. So that guy sucks.

I love the text pieces in the back. They really sell it as “true,” which is quite fun,

I have no idea why this wouldn’t be collected. Maybe Peter David can stop by and explain DC’s trade paperback policies!

I remember when this came out, and I was absolutely FLOORED by the storytelling–both writing and art. It is nothing less than a travesty that this has never been collected. Exactly what is DC’s policy about trades that prevents this from being collected, because this stuff is epic on the level of Roy Thomas’ adaption of the Conan stories.

Another interesting aspect of this story is that the articles contained within the comic claimed it was based on the real research of a university professor (I forget the name, but he was also mentioned in an issue of Supergirl). Being 12 or 13 when I first read the comic, I completely believed this was true until I reached the last issue and realized this was the origin story of that Aquaman guy (who never interested me before). Of course, I was hooked by then so I had to get Aquaman: Time & Tide (also by PAD), in which Aquaman himself finds the books and decides to continue the tradition by chronicling his life.

That aside, I always meant to pick this up; while I didn’t stick with David’s Aquaman series for very long, the most interesting bits referenced AC.
