John Ostrander Benefit Auction!

I wanted to wait until now to mention it, so no one would forget between the time this was first announced and this weekend, when the action actually is.

On Saturday night at the Chicago Comic Con, there is going to be a special auction to raise money to help comic book writer John Ostrander pay for some badly needed (and expensive) eye surgery he recently had (that his insurance would not cover).

Check out Comix4Sight to get more details on how you can chip in to help one of comic's great writers!

There's an amazing gallery there of various pieces which are being auctioned off, and there's details on how you can contribute some cash to Mr. Ostrander!

Here's one of the amazing pieces - a Batman/Hawkman pin-up by Joe and Andy Kubert!

Be sure to check out the site for more!

It's been really cool to see how much support this auction has received from the professional community. I just worry that these beautiful pieces will be beyond most fans' budgets during these tough times.

I can't help thinking that having DC Comics (finally) release full-color trade paperback collections of Suicide Squad or The Spectre and donating a percentage of the profits to cover John's surgeries and related costs might be a better way to go (for the average fans who are as worried about the security of their own jobs these days as they are worried about the health of a favorite comics creator, at least). It would be a classy move and great PR on DC's part and would finally get some long runs of must-read comics back in print.

Still, the artwork being auctioned is beautiful and you can't beat the cause.

Some AMAZING art up for auction there...

Wish I could attend. I'd love one of the Tim Truman pieces...

I can't help but think they would have got more money from a charity ebay account. It would draw collectors worldwide and not just ones who happen to be going to chicago comic-con.(which has a pretty weak line up this year)

Agreed, Nicola. I live in the UK and so won't be attending, but I would have chucked a bid or two up on Ebay if given the chance to contribute to such a worthy cause.

i agree dc should help out John by reprinting his work espically suicide squad. though if the auction is success full maybe dc will then decide we have to be involved even thuogh all that art is going to be too pricey for some fans. but a good idea to help out a most deserving guy a legend like John deserves something like that a way to thank him for all the joy he has brought fans of his work and also a nice idea

Man, you guys need universal health care. My very best wishes go to Mr. Ostrander. Needless to say that is great art up for auction.

Brian: Perhaps you should add to this post - or note in a separate post - that for those who want to help Ostrander but can't participate in the auction, the comix4sight.com web page includes a "Donate" button for on-line contributions of any size, as well as a mailing address for money orders or checks.

Actually, everybody: Some of the art will be auctioned off online. They've collected too much to auction it off during tonight's benefit, so some will be up for silent auction throughout the con, and some will be sold online. Further details will be posted, I imagine, at the Comix4Sight site.
