Another Iconic Panel Showdown!

Johnny Storm shaving Namor’s face with his flames until he reveals who he is iconic – it’s gets referenced frequently.

However, the shaving is done over a couple of panels – so which one is the “iconic” one? (Continue Reading for the choices)

Panel #1

Panel #2

or (the “compromise” panel) Panel #3

The poll will stay open until I figure a consensus has been chosen.

hate to tell ya, but it’s panel #3 that’s always stood out for me

The option of #3 is there, Nate!

I think Panel #3 it’s the most iconical, too

#2 should probably take it…

…but I voted for 3, because that’s the one I always remember.

While reading the send-up of the column, I had panel # 3 in my head.
It shows the actual reveal.

SO… panel # 3 it is.

PTOR

Alan Moore is the Sub-Mariner?

I voted for #1.

agree, panel three was exactly what I was thinking when reading about what this vote will be for, neither of the other two do enough to convey what is going on, and panel three is the one that it seems they always show.

That’s no real choice. #3

That’s no real choice. #3

As it’s basically tied right now, it seems as though it is a “real” choice.

#3 is the most dramatic. it also captures sequential art in the single panel and isn’t a purely exposition panel like #2.

As others have mention, panel 3 is what I visualised before scrolling down. The text carries panel 2, but the image of the Torch burning away the beard is what sticks in my head.

I went with number 2. It’s the only one that stands on its own as iconic. #3 only works if you know what comes after it.

Aw, I thought I would know all of the iconic panels but I never even knew this scene happened. Sigh.

Number 3 was definitely the one that came to mind before I even scrolled down.

I voted #1.

I am going with #1.

If you were doing a parody of the Marvel style, then you would almost certainly re-create Panel #1 and change the rest of the sequence.

Definitely panel 3. One single image tells the whole story. Besides, whenever I think about this scene, that’s the image that always pops in my head. That’s the definition of an “iconic panel”, you ask me.

Panel 3

Ditto #3, I visualized it the moment I read the first sentence of the post.

Panel 3…I remember first seeing that in the Marvel Saga series from back when.

I have to ask. Why is he also doing his hair in Namor style? How awkward would it be if it wasn’t Namor? And why is ‘shave’ going into ‘hairstyling’?

#1 or #3. I voted for #1 because I usually remember the Torch with the flaming finger ABOUT TO burn the beard off the “bum.” That means it’s the most iconic.

The people trying to decide which panel conveys the idea the best are kind of missing the boat. The question is which panel is most iconic, not which is the most informative.

Suppose someone says to you, “Hey, remember when the Human Torch found Namor wandering around with amnesia?” Do you recall the Torch and Namor with a full beard, half a beard, or no beard?

Yeah, as I was going through them I was like, “that’s not quite … wasn’t there one where … ah! Right, that was it!” Number 3 all the way.

I agree with you Rob Schmidt, but as many of us has stated, panel three was the one that popped into our heads before even looking at the panels, that pretty much makes it iconic by definition.

Yeah, obviously the majority of people here (myself included) instantly think of the third panel.

So that would seem to clinch the “most iconic” part.

BTW: whenever I see that panel I think “Paul McCartney is the Submariner?!?!?”

And yes I know it was stil a couple of years before they made it big over here.

I think most people would answer, ” i recall the Torch burring his beard off” #3 captures the action and story that is remembered. Iconic comicbook panels ARE informative. They summerize the essence of a memorable story.

Sorry to digress, but I’d just like to say to LouReedRichards, I love your handle, man. I’m a huge VU fan, and the Lou Reed albums I’ve heard so far are also fantastic, I just re-listened to New Sensations yesterday, it’s pretty much flawless. Swoop, swoop.

Shaving someone’s beard by fire? Isn’t that dangerous? What the hell were you thinking of, Stan?

If people think of panel #3 when they remember the scene, that’s cool. Then that panel should win the vote and be deemed the most iconic.

Another test would be to see how the scene was portrayed in subsequent references. Assuming the references were only one panel each, they’d show us exactly which step of the process was most iconic.

None of the above

@ IForgotAbout19

Thanks for the kind words.
Yeah I love all the VU albums, they’re all good in their own way, #3 is one of my all time favorite albums period, endlessly relistenable to me.

Lou’s solo work, like some comic book writers can be frustratingly inconsistent.
He has released absolute classics and some real stinkers (IMHO). I haven’t heard most of the stuff off New Sensations in a while, time for a re-listen. Personally I would reccomend Take No Prisoners, one of the best (and funniest) live albums I’ve ever heard. Legendary Hearts and The Raven are also pretty damn good.

And just to keep it on topic:
I bet Lou would vote for panel 3.

Sorry to digress as well, but I assume the thread has died down enough to not mess up the discussion.
My apologies if I have though.

Thanks again!
