Also: There's no overlap between the runs, so since Len Wein showed up with J L Garcia Lopez, he won't be featured as a DC Comics Presents writer. Sorry, Santa.

And Marvel Team-Up 2cd series? Hmmmm....

Maelstrom is fairly great, actually. I was jotting down a list of the best villains ever to debut in a team-up book, and he should certainly make the top ten. (Keep in mind, though, that the White Rabbit is a solid top five.)

You must remember that Gruenwald and Macchio wrote each one one page of each mag (odd or even ones). It is quite funny to try to guess which one wrote who (I couldn't).

Ha! I didn't know that. That goes a LONG way to explaining some of the problems I had with the writing.

I hope I'm not spoiling anything here, but another favorite of mine was that four-issue story Marvel Team-up arc, somewhere after issue 80, by Claremont, Sal Buscema and Leialoha, involving an amnesiac Black Widow that eventually draws in Nick Fury and Shang Chi. Great story and gorgeous art.

That doesn't actually make the list but I agree it's pretty great. (Shang-Chi is mebbe my favorite team-up partner in Marvel.) Steve Leialoha just KILLED on inks, and the whole arc is gorgeous.

I used to collect all four team-up titles- DC Presents, Brave & Bold, Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-In-One- during the 80s. All I could find, anyway, distribution here tended to be spotty, which frustrated me with regards to continuing plotlines. My favorite was DCCP, followed by Team Up, B&B and then 2-in. I never really warmed up to the idea of The Thing as a "host" character, or even a solo hero. Maybe it was because I didn't like the character much, but I don't think he stands well on his own; he needs the FF to give him contrast (the reverse is also true.)

Still, I enjoyed most M-2-in-1s, precisely because I found the ideas so unusual and they used more obscure characters. They also created at least one great villain in Maelstrom, who I think is under-used (except in Great Lakes Avengers :D ) One thing I never liked was the art, especially towards the end of the serious- it just looked too crude, like the series needed a really good inker.

And I agree regarding the whole "Parallel Earths" concept. I never let it bother me much back then -it was superhero comics, after all- but yes, the idea that you're just *one* version of yourself, in a (presumably) infinite multiverse full of them, is confusing, even scary. Who's the real you? Is THERE a real you? Is your life your own or just a repeat of someone else's? (You'd think Batman in particular would have worried about that- his parents were murdered just so he could become Batman? I'd be pissed off...)

Bingham also did some good work on Iron Man in the late seventies/early eighties, between John Romita, Jr.'s two runs with Michelinie and Layton-- I think his issues start around #130 or so and go up through #136 (don't have the issues right in front of me, so I can't be 100% sure). Like the nice page you scanned in, the work is very solid, and worth reading.

As far as the one nobody will never ever guess goes, I'm gonna guess Tom Peyer's 1997-8 run on Marvel Team-Up - featuring the Authority!

(No, not the one you're thinking of.)

On the few occasions I actually go to a physical comic shop I always make a point of seeing if they have any old Brave and Bold issues, and rule of thumb is "buy any I've not read". But even so have only got 30 ish issues. So I suppose I ought to be pleased that I've got half the Alan Brennert run. But blimey... I'm disgruntled that I've only got another two to find.

Some editor should have chained him to a desk, and made him knock out may more. What else are editors for?

I still want to see Wein's DCCP run. (That gets you the Starlin issues, which there aren't enough of to make a run and include one of the only two appearances of J'onn J'onnz in the bronze age, the introductions of Warworld and Mongul, and the cosmic Spectre story. The other Wein stories include one overlap with the previously featured DCCP run, a far, far better Superman/Flash story, and Santa Claus [who doesn't like Santa?])

Aparo deserves some serious love. His 1970s work was outstanding — passionate, dynamic, ripe with character. Even though he got a little broad in the 1980s, I think his dramatic and contrast-heavy style fit Batman perfectly. I'd easily place him among my top 3 Bat-artists.

Ah yes, the REAL Earth-2. How we've missed you. Those two issues of B&B made me find every Earth-2 Batman appearance...and most of the modern JSA and Huntress comics. See DC THAT'S how you use continuity to build a fan's interest.

Yes! That Black Widow story in MTU is an overlooked gem! I always had a soft spot for Sal Buscema, even though his work was never awesome looking, but, in that 4-parter Leialoha does magic with it. Great stuff.

Like I said in an earlier comment, I initially liked the team-up books back in the day because they most often had "done-in-one" issues, but I absolutely loved the MTIO story arcs mentioned here: Project Pegasus, and then later the Serpent Crown story and that three-issue space opera featuring Her, Starhawk & Moondragon. Yes, none of them were perfect, but what incedibly enjoyable stories. Great story and gorgeous art.

...and I've probably said it before on other threads, but B&B 197 is my single favorite issue of that series, even if it wasn't drawn by Aparo.

I don't think that the Porject Pegasus saga was too long or the Warlock/Her too short, but the Serpent Crown one, man, after the 2 action oriented first issues, the last one was kind of weak. And the way they closed the Thundra story was quite poor to my tastes, too.

Was I too hard on PP? It was epic and it always did feel like it was building to something huge 'n important.

Certainly the biggest story ever to feature Quasar, Giant-Man, Thundra, and Wundarr.

Thank you for reminding me why Marvel Two-In-One was one of my favorite comics back then! I remember loving it but thought I must have been completely nuts based on how few people seem to have the fond memories I do. At the time, I thought Project Pegasus was a gi-normous magnum opus. Good times.

Son of the Demon is the one Morrison picked up and ran with and now we have Damien, right? I swear I can picture the cover. Hopefully the library has it....

I'll keep an eye out for the Black Panther issues, too. I really like Bingham's work.
