Other characters were as considerate as imaginary future Batman and Robin…
I don’t get it.
I think it’s pointing out that the future Batman and Robin are considerate enough to distinguish themselves from their predecessors with the “II” marker, whereas the Marvel guys don’t give a crap, Hobgoblin especially who wears an exact replica of his forebearer’s costume. I think what makes it confusing is that all the DC “II”s are sons of the original, whereas the Marvels are not, even though that has no bearing on the joke (or what I presume to be the joke).
I think what makes it confusing is that all the DC “II”s are sons of the original,
Dick Grayson is Batman II.
Why is Robin II a ginger? Is Ivy is mother?
Batman, I don’t think that’s what ironically means, going by either the real definition or the Alanis Morrisette definition.
And here I thought it was in reference to B&R II taking the mantles of living predecessors, while Marvel only passes its torches post-mortem… which actually isn’t true for Hobgoblin. And now Hawkeye.
Robin II’s mom was Kathy Kane. Which means Robin II’s dad was her secret lover, James Olsen.
“9/10 if only…” is likely to bring a different image to mind for New Yorkers and many others.
Yeah, my mind went to 9/11. I still don’t get it.
In the future, the Alanis Morrisette definition of “irony” is the only definition that survives.
OH, WHAT A BLEAK AND HORRIBLE FUTURE THIS WILL BE!
I spent too long trying to figure out how 9/10 was tied into it all. And then the Joker looked like a plane crashing into something. This was a poorly constructed entry, basically.
It’s just the date that he wrote it on. The real title is If only…. Geez.
And the joke is that Batman and Robin have a number two on their chests. He’s just saying it would be funny if other characters did it.
Well, *I* laughed.
I get the joke. But before I opened the link, I too was expecting a WTC reference.
Sorry to double post, but I was just wondering… is this the first story with Dick Grayson growing up to become Batman II? Or was the precedent set even earlier?
I of course meant that all the IIs were at one time under the legal guardianship of their originals.
(Will he call me on the Joker, who likely wouldn’t be given legal guardianship of a Furby? Time will tell!!!)
I think some people aren’t noticing the “II” on future Batman and Robins’ chests. They’re there, but I don’t think the reader’s eye is drawn to them.
Wait…is that a sword for Hawkeye II (didn’t know that was her at first)? Was she the daughter of Hawkeye and the Swordsman? I missed something reading those Essentials…
I’m with Thok. In what parallel universe is this ironic.
If Joker II was Batman’s son and Robin II was Joker’s son, that’d be ironic.
I could understand people’s confusion if the actually date was 9/11, but since it’s not…???? So is any date close to 9/11 off the table now? No 9/9, 9/10, 9/12, 9/13?
I simply noticed, in the list of recent entries on the main CBR page, that it was the only entry with a date in front of it, (like so: http://i32.tinypic.com/2yyrtrb.jpg )so I figured it was important in some way.
Those dates aren’t off the table, but with an entry labeled “If Only–9/10…” I can see how some people would think that the entry would be about the WTC attack. Like “If Only–we had known one day earlier.” Like that.
You know, nobody bitched about the date on “If Only” from two days ago.
the poin tof the piece was suppose to be if only marvel would dare to label their characters who are not the orignal version like hobogoblin though that picture looks kind of lame. and the huntress tt is the current one.
That’s because it was two days ago.
I don’t think anybody is saying that Brian can’t title his posts what he wants, and I don’t think anybody really cares, but I can definitely see why someone would be confused.
It’s like having a title like “It’s beginning to look a lot like– 12/24…” and have the inside continue “… Superman’s got his hands full with Lois this week.
“In the future, the Alanis Morrisette definition of “irony” is the only definition that survives.”
“It’s like having a title like “It’s beginning to look a lot like– 12/24…” and have the inside continue “… Superman’s got his hands full with Lois this week.”
So, the term “If only…” is now permanently associated with the WTC attacks?
Yeah, this may very well be the dumbest complaint I’ve ever heard about a blog entry.
And I see a lot of dumb complaints. Usually, I just ignore the dumb complaints, but wow, this was so bad I had to acknowledge it.
No, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying that today, the day before the anniversay of the attacks, I can understand how the phrase “If only…” followed by the ellipsis, might be confusing to some. Two days before, or two days after, and nobody notices. Today and tomorrow, I can see how there might be some confusion.
That’s all I’m saying.
Well, that’s certainly worth saying.
Does Joker II have a “II” on his chest? Is that the fashion in this imaginary story? And if Robin II is the son of Batman, who is Batman II?
Batman II is Dick Grayson, I think.
Not once did I think of 9/11 until you guys started talking about it.
“Wait…is that a sword for Hawkeye II (didn’t know that was her at first)? Was she the daughter of Hawkeye and the Swordsman?”
No, she just stole their stuff.
I thought this entry was a 9/11 reference too based on the title.
I agree with Wesley, although I wouldn’t have taken the time to mention the problem myself.
maybe the fact that so many peoples minds were drawn to 9/11 says more about them that it does about the blog post…
Says more than it does about the people than the blog.
“Wait…is that a sword for Hawkeye II (didn’t know that was her at first)? Was she the daughter of Hawkeye and the Swordsman? I missed something reading those Essentials…”
Hawkeye II actually uses weapons from several Avengers. She only got the name because at the time Hawkeye was ‘dead’ so it was up for grabs (and Marvel can’t let a name rest unused for long for fear someone else will trademark it- see: the FOUR Spider-Women) Since it’s a given that Haweye will eventually reclaim his name (“Ronin” sucks) she’ll eventually have to get another name.
Maybe the fact that some people’s mind were not drawn to 9/11 says more about them than it does about the blog post. See, it’s logic!
