A Year of Cool Comic Book Moments – Day 271
Here is the latest cool comic book moment in our year-long look at one cool comic book moment a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!
After that quick break for porn, back to Casanova!
Okay, again, to recap – Casanova Quinn was a thief who was sent by a bad guy to another dimension where Casanova is a good guy, working for the spy agency EMPIRE (of course, when you discuss who’s “good,” well, Good and bad, I define these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow). Of course, while working for EMPIRE, he’s secretly working as a double agent for the bad guy (who runs the counter group WASTE).
So in issue #5, by Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba, Casanova is sent to piggyback a UN mission to a mysterious island filled with “savages” that can only be accessed once a year. Years ago, a different bad guy stashed his money man here to keep him safe – Casanova is take down this fellow.

“The” moment for me is right there at the end when he is found out, but I suppose there were a few other good examples on the rest of the pages.

Okay, this is a bit more like it. He essentially discovers Wakanda.
Still hate the art and coloring, though.

Casanova is everything I love about comics rolled into one. IS it just me or is the green here alot more vibrant than in the printed material?

Awesome moment, and I just can’t say enough positive things about Casanova. For me the moment here is the reveal that the natives aren’t all they seem. “How weary I grow of the charade”…always makes me chuckle.
Works like this and Hickman’s Nightly News (say how about a moment from that series) makes me wish that Fraction and Hickman would just stick to creator owned work.

I know what series I’m going to try finding in my longboxes this week. Awesome.

Funny – that’s the only thing I do like about it.
Does anyone else thing Casanova looks like Vernon Kaye?

How can anyone hate the art? Ba, man! Ba!
I need to sit down and marathon all my Cass issues.

DanCJ: I always saw Mick Jagger in there, myself. A very beefy Mick Jagger.
Also, the island is called Coldheart? Having never caught that, I’m now going to assume it’s a really cute play on Heart of Darkness.

“How Weary I grow of this charade” is the moment for me.

I’d say the big “We’ll cry all the way back to paradise” reveal is the moment.
Good thing these “savages” weren’t as stereotypical as they seemed, or I’d have to criticize them.

It’s in the backmatter of this issue (I think) that Fraction cites the Peter Jackson King Kong movie’s demonic portrayal of its natives as inspiration for those characters. The spear through the chest is a direct reference, from what I remember of the film.
