Nice Review of the Cover of Was Superman a Spy?

My pal Michael sent me this nice review of the cover of Was Superman a Spy? (which, as always, you can purchase here).

The review said very nice things about Mickey Duzyj’s art, which was nice.

Definitely. I design a lot of book covers, and this one is great. A very, very impressive combination of good illustration and good design. (And the words inside weren’t bad either, heh.)

We need to find you a thesaurus, Brian. That’s three uses of “nice” in a two-sentence post. Four, if you count the headline. ;)

Hehe…I do like using that word! :)

I’m glad that people are giving you good reviews.

Cover doesn’t look a DAMN thing like Chris Ware – The figure drawing, the slant angle between the figure and the buildings, the slant-y logos, even the coloring is sorta similar at best …

But, y’know, I appreciate the thought. And copying Chris Ware is probably a bad idea in general, anyway.

OK, I do see what he’s getting at here. Little panels and slightly similar coloring. If you HAVE to compare the cover to a work of a major comic artist, Chris Ware is your guy. But I don’t think you have to.

Of course it’s like Chris Ware, it’s got comic panels on it, and Ware uses comic panels!

Gotta remember, non-comic readers have a much more limited vocabulary/exposure to comics and artists than we do.
(Of course, most just don’t know it yet – they think they’ve read all the one’s worth reading/need to be read Ie. Jimmy Corrigan, Maus, Shortcomings, Watchmen and Sandman – so they’ve got a more limited comics vocab than they think).
(Which still puts them heads and shoulders above anyone who puts ‘Pow! Kabam! Comics have grown up!’ in a headline).

BTW Brian, I have been meaning to ask you, have you written a book lately?
:p
