A Year of Cool Comic Book Moments – Day 308
Here is the latest cool comic book moment in our year-long look at one cool comic book moment a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!
The look at Darwyn Cooke’s New Frontier continues!
Okay, so the set-up for this scene from New Frontier #5 is that some big bad alien is causing all sorts of trouble. Hal Jordan has just become Green Lantern, but he’s still, well, you know, green, but he was a hero even before he had a magic green ring, as shown by his following actions…

That kiss is amazing.

Are there going to be many more “New Frontier” moments? They’re starting to wear a bit thin…

If Hitchcock had filmed this, the rocket would have gone into a tunnel.
More Cooke, please. The Parker book should be good for a moment or two.

Thought the story for NF was kinda thin, but I do enjoy seeing a kiss accompanied by Kirby Krackle.

Oh, I don’t know, I thought the “moment” is where he called her “Miss Rich Bitch” right to her face.

Turning Carol into Star Sapphire was the dumbest thing they could’ve done in GL, but let’s face it, the rules of comics in the 60′s said you never advance a personal relationship storyline.

Depends on your definition of “many”.
At least three more.
That’s why I mention in the intro that it’s New Frontier, so you can skip the pieces until they’re not New Frontier!

Y’know, given the date today, maybe you should take a one-day break from New Frontier(not that I don’t enjoy these scenes, ’cause I do), and take a brief look at another graphic novel from DC. Y’know, the one about the guy with the porcelain mask with the moustache?
Remember, remember…

As much as I love Cooke’s drawing style, his page layouts have never done it for me. The pin-up page of the kiss is beautifully drawn, of course, but look how the perspective shifts 180 degrees between that and the previous panel (in which Hal and Carol are on opposite sides from the kiss page). There isn’t a feeling of movement between the two panels; the pin-up page feels very separate from what’s around it.
I’ve also never been a big fan of the plotting of New Frontier – I find it sprawling, and not in a good way. It’s worth owning, though, (and worth highlighting) just for Cooke’s amazing sense of design and illustration.

Y’know, I’m just going to come out and say that I think the story for New Frontier is pretty awesome, especially as it gets more focused in the second half.

Surely one of the greatest kisses in all of comics. Thank you Mr. Cooke for all these sublime moments.

I think the archive page is broken, at least it hasn’t worked for me for two days.

I’d quite happily read 365 Cool New Frontier Moments. But more Cooke from anywhere will do.
