Great Legion cover but I think Adventure 247 will outvote it. I worry Legion fans may be split!

Dunno, I can see the appeal of both kinds of covers.

Yes, I do feel nostalgic for the old-style "story" covers. You could remember the story inside just by glancing at them.

But I think the Preacher cover is very striking and interesting, even though it portrays Jesse as far more sinister than he is. It's a good cover in that it creates a sense of mystery for what happens in the comics, unlike the old covers. It's not really a "pin-up" cover, it's more like a symbolic cover. Since, it's not just Jesse posing around, it actually hints at story elements, like the conflagration at the church.

Fabry's awesome, but somehow his covers for Preacher so turned me off that I never even tried the series while it was on the stands. (Eventually caught up in trades, of course.) They just conveyed an atmosphere I wasn't interested in entering into-- and one that wasn't really related to the series. Unlike Ennis' Hellblazer, Preacher had a soft and gooey heart of gold under the blasphemy, obscenity, nudity, and salami-- and, like UM, I don't think the Fabry covers even hinted at that.

I think this early on the countdown, we already see how the creation of covers has changed with the years. I mean look at these, which is more catchy? Which one tells you "buy me" better?

IMO, The Preacher cover looks really good, but as a cover, it's definitely weaker in terms of catching attention. The other, older ones, seem so much more puzzling or interesting (though the Batgirl cover may be trying too hard with all the captions, hey, it's still a new character). I miss that, and hated when almost all covers became pin-ups.

It was $4.25 Canadian too. It's funny how Vertigo books are cheaper here now than nearly 15 years ago!

Dan:

Vertigo first issues were frequently 40 pages around this time. The next issue is back to regular size and $2.50. I think that was $.25 more than the average DC comic then.

Superman vs the Flash. I dislike that Preacher cover because Jesse looks so sinister on it - not what his character was like whatsoever. It's a very poor representation of the series.
