Some guy said:
"1 - John Buscema
2 - Jack Kirby (right behind Buscema but way ahead of:
3 - George Perez"

I definitely agree that Buscema's first run puts him at the top, even if that awful later run with the lame duck Gilgamesh-including cast pulls his average down a bit, but Perez isn't "way" behind.
Kirby stuck around for a very short time. His presence at the very beginning keeps him on the "definitive" list, but his shot tenure keeps him from being "way" ahead, if you're talking about any factors other than general Kirby awesomeness.

Well, these were opinion polls, and I long ago stopped expecting people's opinions to be tied to raw logic very much. Not that that's a bad thing; comics are entertainment so gut reaction and how these things make/made people feel is just as fascinating to me as the mental cogitations they devote to them.

So, in my gut: I never acquired a particular fondness for J'on, and Ben became emotionally inextricable for me with the malaise of Clone Saga. To me the masterstroke of the Ozzy reveal wasn't just that their peak-human-hero (putting him in the company of such as Batman and Captain America) was the villain, but that he carried out his master plan and *then* revealed it, in utter contradiction of all expectation. Double-whammy. Never read Hellblazer, haven't read very much Flash; guess I'm not that hardcore, but I still get a vote so I voted what I knew. I'll admit I have moments of ambivalence over Hal Jordan, but I dig Green Lantern doing the Green Lantern thing and always have. Whose art do I picture when I picture the League? Its Perez, it really is. Question wasn't who's the greatest butler ever, question was who's MY fave...gut said Jarvis. Ditto Nightcrawler, though I was shocked Scott got that much love considering how much hate you usually hear for him. I heart Vampi.

<blockquote>I know that many fans think of fictional characters as more like friends, to the point of getting pissed when bad things happen to their "friends."</blockquote>

And man are they annoying to talk to!

A character that I want to have a beer with in real life with can still be deadly boring in the context of fictional story. I'm not saying that is necessarily the case with Nightcrawler. Just saying that being a pleasant person isn't something I value either way when thinking of favorite characters.

I know that many fans think of fictional characters as more like friends, to the point of getting pissed when bad things happen to their "friends." That was never the case with me.

<blockquote>
I've never seen so sad a thing as the people here getting worked up over the results of opinion poles.</blockquote>

I can top that - people who posted in the comments of the polls about how they love a character so much they voted for him ten times.

That's sad beyond sad - rigging an inconsequential opinion poll for the benefit (though I'm not sure what the benefit is) of a fictional character.

As far as the "favorite X-Man" question, I think word choice is really important with these things. The question wasn't who we thought was the BEST character, but our favorite. When I see "who's your favorite," it makes me think of who I would most like to have a beer with, who would definitely be Nightcrawler, because (and I think we can all agree on this) Logan is a whiny little bitch.

Definitive is a tricky term. If you're the artist on JLA, it's a lot easier to provide definitive versions of Booster Gold, Ice, and Guy Gardner than it is to provide definitive versions of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

<blockquote>Neal Adams... Man, I love hlm, but he draw just a few issues with the Avengers (five, maybe?), the Kree-Srull war. Not enough to make him a relevant artist for the series, like he did with Batman.</blockquote>

So Neal Adams is to the Avengers as George Perez is to the Justice League. By which I mean, awesome.

On the least favorite JLAer poll, the mean was 14.3% and the Standard Deviation was 11.9%. Wonder Woman got the closest to the "random" result at 15%. The only really meaningful result was poor Aquaman all the way out at 38%. While the 1,842 respondents were not randomly selected that is not a bad sample size considering the size of the direct market.

On the favorite JLAer poll, the mean was again 14.3%. However, the standard deviation was 8%. The most averagely beloved JLAer was The Flash. There were more significant results. Folks love them some Batman in the JLA. They also feel the most tepidly about Wonder Woman and Aquaman. The sample size was 27% smaller at 1,345.

So, we have learned that comic fans would rather rip things on the Internet than praise them. That means creators should pretty well ignore about a third of the negative comments. They come from folks that are never reading whatever they are critiquing anyway.

Also, Aquaman is easily the least popular member of the original JLA and that while most people like Wonder Woman just fine very few love her. That suggests the 'Big 7' Justice League could use another female member and the logical slot is Aquaman's.

In other words, Bruce Timm did his market research prior launching his "Justice League" animated series.

Nightcrawler ALWAYS beats Wolveirne in these polls. I figure it's hard for people to claim such a popular, over-used character as a #1 favorite; people usually put Wolverine on their short list of favorite X-Men but they choose someone they feel they have a more personal connection with, someone who's not loved by EVERYbody, as #1.
