The moment seemed artificial to me. I.e., a gimmick and a transparent one at that. Get Superman out of the way so the other heroes can shine--a classically lame approach found in early JLA stories.

Having never read this I can not help but wonder, why is Nick Fury on the scene.

Speaking of shock. There's the following scene where Lois Lane loses her composure while trying the report on the events ("I can't do this"). It conveyed that the characters are still in shock and the graveness of the situation.

Good way to pick up where the penultimate issue left off.

The only sad thing here is that after watching so many episodes of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, Superman getting knocked around like a rag doll, even apparently killed, didn'tt phase me like it probably should have (especially given the how Cooke does build him up as the uber powerful hero throughout the book). If I'd read it when I was younger and more informed by the movies and silver age characterization as flat out invincible, this would have been a more "Oh No!" moment for me. Still, great moment.

As a side note, it does strike me when talking to non-comic readers about Superman that the man on the street seems to understand Superman's power of invulnerability as, well, literal. Outside of Kryptonite, people assume nothing can hurt the guy, period. This makes explaining that Doomsday killed Superman by simply punching him to death somewhat challenging.

Yeah, so am I. It was a great moment in the movie, but would've played out SO much better as the last page of the second-last issue.
