This Annual had nothing over All-Star Squadron Annual 2. That being said, if there is a series that cries out for Showcase Presents treatment, it is All-Star Squadron.

It was indeed in an issue of Green Lantern (from the 70's) that it was revealed The Green Flame Of Life that gave Alan Scott his powers came from (but was not the) Starheart, the collection of all the magic in the Universe of Earth -1, created by the Guardians because they felt it disrupted natural laws. (Presumably this was magic *in space* only, since Earth-1 had plenty of magic using characters.) Apparently the Starheart became sentient and decided to imitate its creators by having its own Green Lantern, but in another world so they wouldn't know what it was up to (this last part is my theory... really it was all just an excuse to link the two Green Lanterns, and not a terribly well thought-out one.)

Similarly, this story was just Thomas linking the origins of Wildcat, The Atom and The Guardian, simply because they had the the same "trained by an unnamed boxing trainer" origin. Not that bad an idea in itself, but ripping off the Starheart just for that? It felt lame, especially since he brought in the character just to kill him.

A funny thing about this issue is the page where they go out of their way to explain where every other hero is and why they aren't helping out.

Well, at least Rob Schmidt will be happy.

I think it was earlier than this that they introduced the retcon where the meteor used to make Alan Scott's lantern and ring is actually the "Starheart." This artifact was made by the Guardians to imprision "all" the magical energy of Earth I, and they sent it into the universe of Earth II. This may have been first mentioned in GL #111-112 in 1978.

Yeah for an Annual this one was pretty dull.
Was this the first time the Alan Scott's power is the wild magic from Oa idea was mentioned? That was a clever reason why there would be a Green Lantern on Earth Two.

I thought it was a fun issue when I was a kid, and still do today. Gorgeous art by Gonzales & Ordway.

A funny thing about this issue is the page where they go out of their way to explain where every other hero is and why they aren't helping out.

A big reason for that is probably so that Roy Thomas could get in a Hawkman cameo. Hawkman was the only JSAer who appeared in every single issue of the Golden Age All-Star Comics, so RT decided to continue that tradition in All-Star Squadron.

Fun fact: the term "Retroactive Continuity" (the source of today's "Retcon") was first introduced in an All-Star Squadron letters page!

I remember reading this one when I was a kid: http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd210/captainatom/All-Star_Squadron_31.jpg

I had no idea what the hell was going on, but seeing all those heroes together was quite epic.
