I just picked up Emerald Twilight/New Dawn at the library and tried explaining to my wife why it made me so upset that they’d brought Hal Jordan back as a Green Lantern after that. She nodded politely and kind of zoned out. On the way back to the library, though, she started reading it and really got into it.

What bugs me most about Hal’s return as a Green Lantern was all of the character growth that it created for both him AND the Spectre that was completely undone.

Every comic book fan’s been in the position of accidentally trying to explain some comics-related point and realizing that the person they’re talking to doesn’t know enough about the subject to get the short version and doesn’t care enough to have to endure the long version, while the middle-length version just sounds insane.

On the other hand, no comic book fan* has ever been in the position of being approached by a strange woman in a bar, so that kinda killed my suspension of disbelief.

* (I am, of course, using hyperbole for the sake of humor – I’m sure it’s actually happened to everyone but me)

Oh yeah, lunatics are totally more understandable. I had a chat with some lady the other day that claimed the Illuminati was out to kill her, that Bill Clinton raped her (that was at least somewhat believable until she mentioned the Illuminati), that whenever you see movement in the corner of your eye but then look to see what it is and don’t see anything? It’s government agents spying on you with their fancy invisibility cloaks they’ve had since the 80s.

I would have stopped after “Green Lantern” maybe before, played it off with something like “silly comic book thing, nevermind.” Gotta love Josh’s conviction but damn he’s gonna be a lonely man. Capturing the sheer train wreck of trying to have a conversation about comics with someone that doesn’t know or care anything about them, makes this weeks strip extremely nerve wracking and funny. Great job.

Funny story: I was trying to keep my comic-nerddom from a girl I was seeing, and was talking about music, when I mentioned Marc Spector.
“Who?”
“You know, that crazy producer from the 60s, produced ‘Let It Be’ by the Beatles?”
“You mean Phil Spector?”
“Right! My mistake! Marc Spector…

Ha! The last line sold this for me. At least he’s more self-aware than a lot of comic fans.

Though I have to say I agree with most of what he said in the eighth panel – Rayner really did have more potential as a character than boring ol’ Hal Jordan ever did.
