Wow, you covered Underground (and got a comment from Mr. Lieber!) this week, S.W.O.R.D. last week, and JLI in between—I guess Mr. Cronin's Comic Book Legends Revealed won't be the only CBR blog I'll be checking every week from now on . . .

I too miss old-fashion fun superhero books (though I also enjoy the current GL gore-fests and finally got around to reading Green Lantern Corps: Recharge today), but I've never read Super Friends. I did, however, pick up the first two issues of Batman: The Brave and the Bold (mostly because Jaime Reyes was in the first one), but I personally found them TOO simplistic for my tastes—comics don't have to be simple to appeal to kids, I say! Anyway, I picked up the first Tiny Titans trade at the library yesterday, so maybe that one will be more to my liking.

I've also never checked out Phonogram, though I've enjoyed Mr. Gillen's Beta Ray Bill and S.W.O.R.D., so I might have to. Oh, and Neal K.—I guess a lot of people in my area need to be ostracized, because my local shop doesn't have ANY holds for Phonogram (though one customer gets it in trade). We had one, but I guess that customer was more of a fan of Mr. McKelvie and didn't like the story (sorry, Mr. Gillen!).

I do like the new format, but I also wish the cover showed up again when you actually discussed each issue. But that's just me.

If you are a fan of comics, not buying Phonogram should be a criminal offense. Or at the very least a reason for ostracism and ridicule. Its one of the best books on the stands, now that it finally is back on the stands.

Jack Norris: The reference to the "DC Superfriends" as the name of the team within the book itself is pretty grating. I've read the "super-pets" issue, where they team up to fight Kanjar Ro, to my 4-year-old daughter dozens of times by now, and I just skip that part and either call them the Superfriends or the Justice League.

Amen to the new format. I love the "One panel of awesome"! Really great post all around this week - the discussions of the art/pictures were really well thought out and you really nailed the awesomeness that is Phonogram. I hate to pile on the praise (not really, it's deserved), but this version of the bathroom scene is one of my favorite things I've read or seen this year. Mary - you should totally break the budget for this book. Or skip a "Blackest List Siege Night Reign" tie-in.

Ahhh, The Humpty Dance. Never fails to make me smile a little...

Jack: That's very weird. I don't have that issue, but that's still weird.

Mary: Batman: Unseen is a "lost" tale of Bruce Wayne as Batman. Apparently Bruce is still Batman in Brave and the Bold, Superman/Batman and Batman Confidential, so I don't know why DC has to go out of the way to let us know that this is a "lost" tale. We all know Bruce is coming back, so we're perfectly comfortable with reading stories about him.

And if you have the money, definitely check out Phonogram.

FGJ: Yeah, I know. I bought my other daughter Magic Trixie and she likes looking at the pictures. I've given Mia a few comics, but she doesn't seem that interested. We'll see!

Good call, Random Stranger!

I believe those lyrics are 'Tobacco Island' by Flogging Molly. You don't need a B.A. in history to enjoy the lyrics, but it sure helps.

You don't need to be able to read to enjoy pictures of superheroes - I loved superheroes as a kid without having read about them!
And the first one I read, a Batman book with the first appearance of KGBeast, was pretty much totally different to everything I thought was cool about them.

Hey Greg:

Suggestion for a comic for your girls: ELECTRIC GIRL by Mike Brennan through AIT/PlanetLar

http://www.electricgirl.com/

I can't say I bought any of the selections you mentioned (in fact my shopping this week was basically completing my runs of HELLBOY: The WILD HUNT, BPRD: 1947, and WITCHFINDER series from my mail order retailer and getting nothing from my LCS).

My friend (and former CBRian) Figaro got the Super Friends comic, though.

Is Batman back now? I heard he was dead. (I knew, of course, that any such death would have to be temporary, but I hadn't heard anything about him being back yet.)

I don't like Maleev's art, either. He seems to be a decent enough penciler (or photo-tracer, or whatever it is he does), but I'd really prefer normal colouring, and none of these weird special-effects he does. I haven't read the newest Spider-Woman, so I can't comment on what he does there specifically, but I haven't liked the previous books I've seen him do. (I'll probably still buy the Spider-Woman, though. It's a bit dull so far, but I know Bendis can take a while to warm up, and I do like most of the other things I've read by him.)

I never heard of Phonogram until last week, or Kieron Gillen or McKelvie, but I did like SWORD, so I might start getting Phonogram. If I can afford it. Maybe.

And I also love the new format with all the covers at the beginning.

Thank you for enjoying the book, Greg, and you are correct: I am coloring this arc in addition to pencilling and inking it (and enjoying it quite a bit ;)). And I have been coloring my front and back covers. This particular back cover is a teaser (like I have been doing on each issue) of the next "episode": once you will read the issue will see why of my EC tribute ;)
FUN! :)

Cheers,
Francesco

Sure. To the new format.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUT, you don't win the parenting award of the year for the "indoctrinating your daughter into the ways of comics".

Tsk tsk tsk. The poor wee girl being contaminated and corrupted by comics. Tsk tsk tsk.

I tried an issue of that Superfriends comic a while back, and the only thing that bugged me was that another character referred to them in-story as "the DC Superfriends." Was this just because this version operates from America's capital, or are they actually going around as branded characters withing the stories?
Because that annoys me somehow.

"I'm busy indoctrinating my daughter into the ways of comics."

Clearly, the best way to do this is to jump out of doorways dressed as Wonder Woman.

Thanks for the coverage. For the record, Jeff Parker had a LOT of input into UNDERGROUND's layout. We're both part of Periscope studio, Jeff's a terrific artist himself, and his desk is maybe 12 feel from mine. When I'm blocking a page out, making decisions about what goes where, it's easy for him to suggest ideas or make a quick sketch of a panel or a page.

Mike: I'm not sure, but I don't think it's one of these!

Alan: Yeah, I liked the back cover too. It was keen-o.

My wife is fairly certain she got the T-shirt during one of her rare trips to Wal-Mart. They're good for something!
