Except for this bit, I was really disappointed by the JLA/Hitman two-parter. I think Ennis’ distaste for superheroes got in the way through most of it.

Nice moment. A pity it was marred by the poor choice of comparison from Superman, however. Truman in 1945? That was a textbook example of gratuitous violence.

i love to make a comment that just explains what happened in the scene with an occasional shred of an opinion in there that is really just an extrapolation of what the scene is obviously trying to evoke. then i add some vague comment to sum it up that doesn’t really mean anything at all.

so heart breaking to not only have super man want absolution from a priest for tommy and knows as supes he can not confess and then supes having a grave put on the moon which is a part of a bahtroom. proving hit man was too a head of its time for the comic market.

This is the kind of thing you need to show to people who think Garth Ennis’ work is all about swearing and over-the-top violence. Sure, he does that stuff, and does it very well, but he also excels at creating emotionally powerful scenes.
Back when “Preacher” had a letter column, Ennis said that while he didn’t really have much use for super-heroes in general, he wouldn’t mind having a shot at Superman. His handling of the character here and in “Hitman” 34 shows a certain reverence for the character that’s largely absent from his treatment of other DCU heroes (and Marvel ones, too, for that matter).

When people erroneously claim that the 1990′s were a barren wasteland for interesting comics, this series belongs at the top of pile you use to refute such unfounded opinions.

(And yes, what I’ve really come to grasp is that they mean “Spider-Man and X-Men sucked”, but that’s not “all comics” now is it?)

Probably my favourite series ever and this two part coda is just the icing on top of the cake.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Garth Ennis is the best and it’s a shame that Hitman isn’t as well known as some of his other work.

This sequence is also great because it shows that Ennis’ distaste for superheroes isn’t just a cynical, knee-jerk reaction. He can back up his opinion.
