No, because philosophy has always been a vital facet of the character from Ditko's objectivism to O'Neil's zen buddhism years. During Vic's mentorship of Renee in 52 Rucka portrayed The Question as someone always seeking answers and new questions.

Beating up pimps and gangsters is just a hobby.

She is The Question, and it does not seem unreasonable at all that The Question would be brushing up on her philosophy.

Because knowing philosophy is a vital part of fighting crime at a street level!

Tucson has some very strange aspects to it. We also have the bronze statue of Wyatt and Virgil Earp at the Tucson railroad station, commemorating the night that the Earps stopped the train carrying the suspected killer of Morgan Earp, who Wyatt then calmly killed, unloading both barrels of a shotgun into the guy. It's a very nice statue, but I have to wonder how unnerving it is to wait for a train there.

Mario: I definitely considered that panel, but you're right - none of the panels that showed the two different art styles could really be taken out of context. Those were brilliantly done, though.

I think your panel of awesome for Detective Comics should have been the panel where Kate's hand drawn in the more simple style reaching out to Batman's hand which is in the ink wash (is it ink wash? :S well, the more detailed crazy art) hand. I found that to be a very important panel in this issue. Overall, that entire seen where not only the two art styles of J. H. Williams III converge, but both Kate's old livestyle and what will soon be her current lifestyle. Excellent book!

Hmmm. Your statement about men is probably accurate, s1rude.

Jack: I don't think Reed is a dick, I just wonder why writers often feel a need to briefly make him a dick before he realizes that he needs to pay more attention to his family. I thought that was a problem with Hickman's first arc because it robbed the story of any suspense, because we knew what he'd do. It seems like there are plenty of stories to tell about Reed and his science and being a good dad without him being a dick.

Mary: Well, this issue does seem to address that, if that's anything for you!

Eh, Stanb was writing what people back then seemed to think a "functional marriage" WAS based on any other mass-media example you'd care to name. I mean, by today's standards Ralph Kramden is a domestic batterer, Ricky and Lucy are deeply dysfunctional, and pretty much any dramatic example in an adventure series looks no different than Reed and Sue.

You're not scoring points against Stan, you're compalining about pop culture in the pre-feminist era.

I still haven't read a Fantastic Four since Millar's been gone. I know it's got to be better than the stuff he wrote, but that's not saying much. Anyway, a one-issue story does seem like the best time to check it out, but if they're still doing crap like Nu-World, I don't really know if I should.

Or people reading the Silver Age issues and realizing Stan Lee didn't have a clue how to write a functional marriage.

I know, sorry to fanboy-out there for a second, but we all have our areas...

...There is an awful lot of that "arrogant dick" interpretation of the character floating around the blogosphere lately, though, and it's pretty much all projection or people repeating what they've heard said in an offhand crack (usually) and has snowballed into being regarded as an obvious bit of common "knowledge" (with far less of an in-story justification than, say, Asshole Batman).

"Finding it Harder to be Gentleman" by the White Stripes. I'm beginning to think we have similar tastes in music, GB.

I think McQueen is one of the cooler dudes in pop culture history, but I'm kind of with Bill on Bullitt. I always found it to be slow and convoluted. Brubaker does make me want to see the car chase in Robbery, though, because the one in Bullitt is impressive but does feel light due to the lack of suspense about its outcome.

In comics, we agree on most everything we each got this week. Chew and Unknown Soldier both keep getting better and need pub + support. Regarding the question about the portrayal of men you raise in your discussion of 'Tec, I find men (myself included) to be largely unable to communicate (at least comfortably) about or while displaying sensitivity, vulnerability or any other "emotional weakness". It would stand to reason that comics written predominantly by men would not excel at depicting those kinds of interactions.

@Evan

Congrats to you and Jill for such a wonderful series, I was lucky enough to pick up the Dark Horse Book of...volumes and always looked forward to the Beasts shorts. Seeing this done up in a full scale mini series has been a blast. Probably my favorite new series of the year.
