By the way, am I the only one who looks at the cover for "Complete Love" and thinks the woman is taking off a diving mask??

You have me very, very intrigued, Scott!

I may not comment on everything you post, but I do read them. It's a great way of expanding my knowledge of the history of comics outside "The Big Two", Thank you!

Yup - Ace was in pulps, then comics and then paperbacks.

I certain that I read somewhere that it was a former Avon books executive who worked with Ace's Mr. Wyn to make the move into paperbacks. Their timing was impeccable.

Crash- thanks for the comment. I try to change topics around a bit - so hopefully there's something for everyone. There's really nothing I've said so in any of my bits that haven't been written before in fandom, but hopefully this is a good place for a more modern or casual fan to become interested in some older books.

Blackjak - that is a fine cover. I once owned a copy and the shade of green used is particularly stunning. There's an entire subgenre of 'gargoyle covers' out there. I think Pat Calhoun wrote about them once in Comic Book Marketplace.

I *think* I knew Ace published comics, but I had no idea those preceded the paperbacks. Like jazzbo, I'm quite fond of the Ace Double sf paperbacks (I believe they followed the same format, with considerably less success, for westerns & maybe mysteries for awhile there ...), though I've got only a few dozen, rather than the 100s he presumably owns. (About 15 years ago a small used book place opened up about a quarter-mile from my house in Arkansas with stock that inluded the owner's husband's sf books from when he was a kid, hauled down from the attic to sell. That included loads of Ace Doubles & sf digests from the mid-'50s, all priced I believe at $2.50 each, which is how I wound up with a bunch of first-editions pbs by my favorite author, Philip K. Dick.)

Hey Scott, while the subject matter can be really hit-and-miss for me, I often really enjoy this column. It's a real service for fans of the artform who want to know more.

I had no idea Ace ever published comics. Years ago I started collecting their Ace Double sci-fi paperbacks. They were 2 books published together, flip book style. I've got over half of them now. They're worth owning just for the cover art alone in most cases.
