Eight Van Lente Comics You Might Not Have Read…

Here are some comics written by Fred Van Lente that you might not be so familiar with!

Awesome: The Indie Spinner Rack Anthology – this one has other great stories from people like Nick Bertozzi and Matt Kindt!

Cowboy and Aliens is likely going to be made into a film!

Ghosting is an interesting take on the supernatural.

Outlaw Territory was an anthology of Western stories. Joe Kelly, Greg Pak, Steven Grant and Ivan Brandon, among others, wrote stories in it!

Tales from the Crypt is the recent re-make series. Fred wrote a couple of stories.

Tranquility is another series by Fred and his Silencers artist, Steve Ellis.

The Weapon was an interesting series that helped introduced us to Scott Koblish as a penciler (he’s now doing penciling work for Marvel)!

And last, but not least, Fred wrote a few issues of Kiss 4-K. Yes, Kiss 4-K.

Awesome.

Cowboys and Aliens is pretty bad. It’s not a shame it’s being made into a movie, but it’s not anywhere near his best work. Strange. I guess someone thinks the concept works well on the big screen.

Does the Awesome anthology live up to its name? Because I will get it, if so.

Ohhhh! Fred Van Lente wrote Tranquility!?!?! I loved that book! They used to send me copies so I could review it for my zine and it was always a highlight of whatever week they shipped it to be on. Has that been collected, or the better question is, I suppose, is it still in print by any chance?

Was it possibly someone else’s creation, and he was just on board as a hired gun?

Well, it was number one the week it came out.

As Platinum paid retailers to order the book.

The answer to both of those questions, Stefan, is yes.

Here is the link where you can buy the trade.

AWESOME does indeed live up to it’s title and then some, although my opinions may be a BIT biased as I was co-editor of the first volume, and contributed art to both.
Volume one was the debut of Comic Book Comics – a 6 page story on the history of crime comics.
Fred and I also did a story in Awesome volume 2 – probably the most offensive thing we’ve ever done. I won’t tell you the title, since this is a “family” website.
You can order both books here: http://www.indiespinnerrack.com/isrstore.htm
