Top 100 Comic Book Storylines 3

Here is the next storyline on the countdown, as voted on by a reader!! Here is the master list of all storylines featured so far.

3. “The Hollow Man” by Brian K. Vaughan, Lee Ferguson and Norm Rapmund (X-Men Icons: Chamber #1-4) – 10 points (1 first place vote)

In this story, Jonothan Starsmore (at the request of Cyclops)enrolls in a pro-mutant program at Empire State University (the same college Peter Parker went to). His goal was to investigate the deaths of some mutant students after a bombing of the “Students for Tolerance” group.

After investigating, Chamber discovered that the boyfriend of the group’s leader actually set the bomb himself, in an attempt to turn his dead friends into a martyr to further the mutant cause!

In the aftermath of this revelation, ESU cancelled the pro-mutant program. However, in an agreement with Xavier’s, they kept one mutant student in a sort of exchange program – one human student would attend Xaviers in return (the human chosen was Chamber’s roommate).

This was an interesting mini-series by Brian K. Vaughan, who really had a handle on Chamber (who was just then getting a big push, as Joe Casey included him on his Uncanny X-Men team), and the scenario was an intriguing one – sort of an extension of the work Chris Claremont had been doing in the mid-80s.

Lee Ferguson’s art was strong, but Jose Villarrubia’s colors were exquisite, and really gave the book a unique look.

APRIL 1ST ANYONE?

not funny.

Ha! Chamber probably wouldn’t even make my top 100 favourite X-Men.

I dunno, this earned a smile.

(I guess the Torment jokes meant he couldn’t really post that…)

And the curveball has arrived.
I never understood why everyone liked Chamber so much.
So funny that he’s now ruined as a character.

Fun! Also note the “as voted on by “a” reader.

I dunno, this earned a smile.

No, Joe already determine it does not.

Shame on you!

(I guess the Torment jokes meant he couldn’t really post that…)

That, and I didn’t want to actually pick a work I did not like, as that seemed kind of mean. This mini-series actually WAS good, so it’s okay to tease it.

It’s time for Global Guardians to make it to Top 2.

@Brian Cronin: What, you’re recommending good new comics to people? You horrible, horrible man.

I actually want to see some stuff that people thought of highly enough to give it a first place vote. (Assuming someone really did vote for this)

I finally picked up the Adventures of Luther Arkwright on Wednesday, and although I’d heard good things about it before, the purchase was a direct result of the discussion in these comment posts.

I don’t understand any of it so far, but it’s absolutely gorgeous.

By the by, it was poster Flip the Page (who has a blog called The Comic Flipper) who picked this as his #1 storyline.

I’d be willing to try it; I do like me the BKV.

WTF? I’ve never even heard of this book. So either Born Again or Dark Phoenix Saga aren’t making it? Whoa…

NEW TOTALS in a minute…

You really needn’t do those totals, Jeremy. You’ll just have to do ‘em over again.

Haven’t read this one, so I can’t say whether this one deserves the # 3 spot.

Assuming that this isn’t a joke.

I can honestly say that I can’t see BKV doing anything better than Y the last man, Ex Machina, The Pride of Baghad, and Runaway.

Not to belabor the obvious, guys, but it’s a joke.

That said, I think Team America was robbed.

for everyone who thinks that this is the real #3, look at the totals.
Brian is just playing a dirty, meanspirited trick. For shame indeed!

By the way, Team America makes my top ten for movies! Its the best use of marionettes i’ve ever seen!

Wow, I thought I was a die-hard X-Fan but I never heard of that series. Of course, the Icons series turned me off after the Rogue story.

Good joke, though. I might have to check it out if I can find it.

i like the “as voted on by a reader.” note the singular.

I think I will find this and read this now.

Nice. You almost had me.

This was great, definitely not in my list, but is a nice addition to the Top 5. :D

Peace.

You had me right until I read how many votes it got. Good one. :)

See, even this beats Kirby.
You kids, you kids.

This mini series has been on my list to buy for a couple months now. I guess this is just the push I needed.

@Joe:

Just keep reading! I found the first 20 pages or so of “Arkwright” to be the hardest. Once you get the essentials of the different paras though everything starts to make a lot more sense and the story just becomes more and more engrossing.

It actually is a pretty good series. Obviously, as everyone has said, its placement here is a joke, but it is still a good one to read. The icons series were all very hit or miss (liked the first couple issues of the Cyclops series, liked this one, Iceman was ok, the others were kind of bad).

I just found this one (thanks internet) as it was one of the few BKV comics I hadn’t read. Picked it up with the Cyclops series. The Cyclops one was a tad amateurish and dumb, but Chamber was pretty good. Not as awkward and heavy-handed.

This isn’t real?? Oh, dang it. I was hoping this would mean that Watchmen didn’t make the list at all. (Wouldn’t that be cool? A huge kick in the face to everyone who said you HAVE to count it as the best.)

So, as long as you’re posting some stories that were only voted on by a single person, how about including some of the ones from my list that probably didn’t get any other votes? That way, all the readers here could learn about some really good stories.

Are people on this post even reading the “10 points (1 first place vote)” part?

Yeah, all kidding about this being #3 aside, this was actually pretty good.

Yeah, all kidding about this being #3 aside, this was actually pretty good. Of course, this would probably appeal more to BKV or Chamber/Generation X fans, but it’s still a good read, and easily one of the better Icons series.

surprised this actully snunk into the top three for thought the character was interesting but did not like the story was expecting something like god loves man kills or dark phonix saga or maybe crisis or something . not to mention chamber has vanished from the x universe

This beat The Dark Knight Returns and Batman Year One? Is this a joke?

How come storyline that got only 10 points, beaten storyline (for example year one) that had 1149 points? This is a joke or a mistake, i dont see any other explanation.

If you have to ask whether this was a joke, you need to take a remedial irony class.

It actually is a really good story and Chamber was one of my favorites. ( I loved Generation X.) I’ve lost it somehow and need to track it down.

Actually, while I loathed the main X-titles throughoutv the 90s, I liked X-Factor, Generation X, and to a lesser extent X-Force (as written by John Francis Moore). I liked Chamber and BKV has reached the point where I will at least sample anything with his name on it and usually end up buying it. Maybe this will be in a quarter bin.

The timing gave it away (before I saw what series it was and what the score was), but it was a good one nonetheless. Any chance we’ll get to see other first place votes that didn’t make the top 100?

You you might have the same experience I had whereby I didn’t have a clue what was going on for most of the book.

Nice one, Brian!

40-odd comments in, some posters are still not realising that it was a sole #1 entry that you’re teasing us with!

Nice to see some of the diversity of our #1 choices…

:-)

Good stuff, BC. I enjoyed your ruse.

I always love point this out, but I gotta say again: $2.99 US, $4.75 Canadian… gotta love that I pay LESS for comics than I did about 8 years ago.

WHAT!! THIS TOTALLY DESERVED TO BE #1!! WHAT A RIP-OFF!

Good to see ‘The Beat’ (see above) got taken in by Brian’s as well as a number of posters! Did you know the word ‘gullible’ isn’t in the dictionary?

Brian, you have literally just made my entire year!

Have to say I’m surprised that I’m the only person who voted for it though, It’s such a brilliant series.

Now I have to hide away and deal with the shock of being mentioned in any shape or form on here.

Greetings! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My website looks weird when browsing from my apple iphone. I’m trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to fix this problem. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thanks!
