A Year of Cool Comics – Day 352

Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!

We continue the Cool Christmas Comic Countdown with an odd/awesome Batman Christmas tale by Mike Friedrich, Neal Adams and Dick Giordano!

Enjoy!

In this offbeat tale, Batman swings by the Gotham Police Department when he sees the Bat-Signal…

Throughout the rest of the eight-page story, people throughout Gotham are stopped short of committing crimes when they think they see Batman, all the while, Batman is singing carols.

That’s some pretty trippy stuff, right?

What an out-of-the-box idea by Friedrich for the plot, and it is amazing how cool Adams and Giordano make Batman singing look – like it is totally natural. Man, what a cool story.

The art really sells this story, I love Batman’s expression when he decides to join the carol singing. However, I have to wonder why someone collecting money for the blind would dress as Batman with a Santa beard.

Utter classic. I always thought this was the comics equivalent of that James Stewart Xmas holiday staple film “It’s A Wonderful Life” – real festive feelgood stuff.

Oh and Neal Adams – the draftmanship, the storytelling/composition/layouts, the archetypal Batman image!… reasons why Adams will be #2 in the Top 50 Artists list (I think we know who’ll be #1 – sorry, Brian!).

Those Friedrich and Giordano blokes didn’t do a bad job either.

cool pick for loved how Adam showed that Batman can even let himself enjoy the holiday and just his myth seems to spread the magic of christmas.

Read this story when I was a wee one, and it had a formative effect on me. Whenever I hear “Fairy tale of New York,” with the chorus line, “The boys of the NYPD choir were singing ‘Galway Bay,”" it’s the Gotham PD choir I picture, with Batman holding down the bass.

Which title/issue is this from? Is it in the post and I’m just blind?
