Random Thoughts! (December 22, 2009)
Random Thought! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year, and have a Kwazy Kwanzaa! It’s random thoughts time! Get excited!
Random Thought! Links post! The 411 Wrestling Top 5 on wrestling siblings which I contributed my picks to (and apparently got some info about the Steiner Brothers wrong because I was a little kid at the time…). High Road/Low Road on Luke Gallows and CM Punk (a difficult one since I really like this angle). TNA Final Resolution roundtable preview (where I made up for my getting zero TLC predictions correct by calling every match… except for the Feast or Famine one where I only predicted one case correctly… but, come on, getting one right was pretty good). Wrestling 4Rs, including my write-up of TNA Impact. Part one of the latest Splash Page (part two is linked at the end of that post). And, finally, wrestler of the week.
Random Thought! I’m not a big superhero movie guy, but I did really enjoy Iron Man and the sequel looks pretty damn good from what I’ve seen so far.
Random Thought! Okay, by the current logic of the various Corps in the DCU, if the characters feel an emotion too strongly, they suddenly join that Corps? Like, Guy Gardner got too mad and BAM! Red Lantern! Seriously?
Random Thought! After the post from two weeks ago, I wanted to avoid wrestling for a while (aside from linking to things I’ve written — but that’s more about providing people with links to other things I’ve written than pushing wrestling), but my girlfriend got me the DVD of Dragon Gate USA’s first PPV, Open the Historic Gate (though, the broadcast version of the show was called Enter the Dragon) for Christmas and I cannot recommend this highly enough to any fan of wrestling. The first disc is the complete show (including the very mediocre Too Cold Scorpio/Kenny Dyksta Doane dark second match) and it’s probably the best show top to the bottom (excluding that dark second match) you’re going to see. Amazing matches, storytelling, moves… fantastic. The second disc includes the FRAY dark match, the promotional video for the PPV, a highlights package, and a couple of older matches featuring many of the wrestlers involved. My girlfriend and I had to stop a couple of times to rest because we were just a little too overwhelmed by the quality… the way that you can only read small chunks of really, really great books sometimes. Highly recommended.
Random Thought! Looking through the DC solicits for March, one book stands out: Nemesis: The Imposters. Final Crisis Aftermath: Escape was a real treat and surprise with some weird storytelling by Ivan Brandon, Marco Rudy, and Cliff Richards. Am very glad that DC is following up on it. Now, if only we could get a Super Young Team series…
Random Thought! I’m looking forward to Siege. Four months seems like it will be the right amount of time for an event of this kind. Plus, most events only have around four issues worth of content anyway…
Random Thought! While I had been planning to avoid it, my girlfriend is a Nicolas Cage fan, so I may be forced to see Kick-Ass. Dammit.
Random Thought! I’ve been a little disappointed with this year’s batch of What If? titles. It’s a comic that’s completely open creatively and is so often mundane and boring. It shouldn’t be. It’s a chance to not have to worry about what comes next and tell stories the way they should be told. Also, the use of painting/heavy computer colouring on the art has been brutal.
Random Thought! And… I’ve got nothing else. I will return in two weeks since I’m taking the week off. Happy holidays again. I will return in the new year.

Only Red/Rage works that way (and you need a Red Ring present, which was only there since a Red Lantern had been killed in the previous issue.) Which sort of makes sense, since extreme rage isn’t something you control; the Red Lanterns are mostly berserkers except for their leader.
While the Nemsis book will probably be solid, I’d be shocked if it sold more than 10,000.

Kick-Ass doesn’t come out till April, so just break up with her before then! Hell, you could make it into a storyline, with her being Steph and you being HHH. I guess Nic Cage would be Kurt Angle. “Its gonna be me or him Stephanie!”
I’m also disappointed with how bad “What ifs” are. I mean, they’ve been doing those kind of books/characters for years. “What if the Question was super-fucking-insane?”(Rorschach!) “What if Wolverine did something really awful and became Clint Eastwood from Unforgiven?(Old Man Logan!”. But the actual “What if” books are so mediocre ;_;

Yes, the fact that Siege will only be four issues long is interesting, especially since it’s written by Bendis. He usually takes four issues just to introduce characters.
The Guy Gardner Red Lantern thing is beyond stupid because it rises the question of “what about the other Lanterns that had friends or loved ones killed in the fight”? They didn’t turn into Red Lanterns. Why is Guy special? Does he have a glandular problem or something?

Because Guy is angrier than most people.
That part of the story didn’t seem odd to me.

Jeremy — HA! That… that’s just wrong.
Brian — No, I agree — Guy being the GL it happens to makes sense. Everything from the character it happens to and the reason for his anger makes sense… the ring just going to him seemed odd somehow.

And right here is where your premise falls apart.

“…Nicolas Cage fan, so I may be forced to see Kick-Ass.”
Oh, no. The kiss of death to any movie project. Nick Cage. Fuck.

I don’t get why Wonder Woman doesn’t have a compassion ring, and Superman doesn’t have a hope ring. In the latter case…gee whiz, the guy’s nickname is “Big Blue.” That’s got blue ring written all over it!

I’ve been sticking with the Kick-Ass comic and I was able to see the movie’s panel and footage at Comic-Con. This is just my opinion, but I think it’s going to play better as a movie.

“Oh, no. The kiss of death to any movie project. Nick Cage. Fuck.”
Worse! It’s a Nick Cage movie with a two-word title, where the words are separated by a punctuation character! Like Face/Off, a movie so bad that I had to invent a new adjective just to describe how bad it was. (Blemic, adj: really horribly awful. As in: “Oh my gods, Face/Off was blemic!” Etym: possibly from “bleagh”, “meh” and “ick”, by way of incoherent rage.)

I stayed away from the Kick-Ass comic because it looked very much not kick-ass, but the Hit-Girl trailer they put together (and on display at Heidi MacDonald’s site) actually looks half-way interesting. (Or it may just be the choice of music for the trailer…)

About Siege being only 4 issues, don’t worry. Sales will be through the roof and Marvel will just tack on a couple issues to the end as well as a few more tie-in miniseries just to milk that cow til its drier than the Griswold’s Christmas turkey.

Because the Corps don’t work that way.
The Indigo Tribe (who control the compassion rings) is seemingly a small group of wandering nomads who have good reason to limit the use of their rings and lanterns. They may not have heard of Wonder Woman, among other things, although they might be interested in making her a member once Blackest Night is dealt with.
Blue has a fairly long screening process where Ganthet and Sayd and the current Blue Lanterns give the new recruits a big discussion about what to expect. Last we saw, they had recruited maybe 5 members. They’ll probably ask Superman at some point (although he’ll probably refuse to join, because he’s Superman.)
As portrayed, the only corps that let you join up without warning are Yellow, and Red (there’s only one Orange Lantern, and Green and Violet ask their users if they want to join; Green because they always have and Violet because the Star Sapphires are imitating the Guardians in their development of a Corps.) And the closest scene we’ve seen to what happened to Guy was the scene where a yellow ring tried to recruit Batman into the Sinestro Corps and when a Red ring did recruit Laira.

Well, that’s all well and good, but it’d still be a fanboy-boner moment to see Indigo Lantern Wonder Woman or Blue Lantern Superman for just a few issues.
Yellow Lantern Batman would have been bloody cool as well, but I guess the recruitment moment was good enough.
Speaking of which, why hasn’t DC reprinted Batman: In Blackest Knight? It was a bit of an under-the-radar book when it was published, and between Countdown and Blackest Night, I’m sure more than a few people would have bought a copy.

Random Thought! You forgot solstice.
Random Thought! The last issue of Green Lantern Corps (as with the one before) was all seven colors of awesome. Tomasi perfectly set up why Guy would become red — he made a red ring available during the melee on Oa, and then killed Kyle, driving angry Guy over the edge. It all came together really well, and I’m glad the ride’s not over. I love GLC.

Guy was also appearing as red on the zombie-O-vision since the moment they showed, whereas the other GLs were not. Which was likely another piece of foreshadowing on Tomasi’s part.

The two Green Lantern books have been way better than the main Blackest night mini. I might not even bother with the rest of the mini, and just get the story from the two ongoing books at this point.

I saw the trailer for Kick-Ass today when I went to see Avatar. It didn’t show Nick Cage. But it did show a 13-year-old girl asking me if I wanted to play. Icky.

Merry Christmas – You intolerant exlusionist!
Happy Holidays – You limp wristed no fun-nik!
Iron Man the first was probably the best superhero movie ever. Perfect casting, good origin story, really great SFX. Iron Man the second will either be a victim of the first one’s success and suck, or will live up to myth that the second movie is always the better than the first. Or it will fall somewhere in between.
I am looking forward to it. That is all.

So did I, but it turns out my 12 year old cousin digs it, and so I had to buy a DVD of it for x-mas.
I usually get them comics, but you can’t get comics anymore, except at comic shops, and faced with the choice between finishing all my shopping there and then, or adding another trip to somewhere else just to spend money, I took the easy way out.
This is why we must make everyone read comics – so they build more shops and make it more convenient for us!
Face/Off was fantastic, up until they switched, and Travolta played the bad guy – something he’s never done well in his life, so why do directors keep thinking he can do it?
(Broken Arrow doesn’t count – it wasn’t actually good, it was just better than people expected, and let’s face it, we didn’t expect much of him).
It made me wish Cage did more roles where he was the villain.

The most recent last of Blackest Night was probably the best issue of the mini so far, but yeah, the two main GL books have been so much better than the “main event” book that they make the mini look like the rest of the DCU’s feeble attempt to attach itself to something cool going on in the Green Lanterns’ corner of the galaxy. Which I suppose is what it IS, but in theory it’s supposed to be the other way around as regards “event” minis and in-series tie-ins.
Actually, par for the course for big event books recently (although it’s more Marvel’s signature than DC’s) a lot of the tie-ins have been better than the main book. I got all the books that the souvenir rings came with, and some of them actually got me to buy the next issue of the title to see how they played out (spoilers for Doom Patrol: I loved the idea of Robotman fighting the Black Lantern corpse of Cliff Steele).

Amen to that. As long as Casey’s writing it.
In the meantime, we’ve got Iron Man 1.5 to look forward to. And, I guess, his run on Superman/Batman. That’s probably the most extraneous book in the DCU, but maybe that’s a good thing.

Yeah, not sure what to think of that one. Other than I’ll be getting it like the good little brainless Casey-phile that I am.

Adam I have In Blackest Knight and it is one of those Elseworlds I have worn out by rereading it constantly. Makes me long for the days of those quirky stories just like What If?s used to be…..
Dragon Gate reminds me of the WCW cruiserweight division and ECW….You give the wrestlers the outcome and how long the match is supposed to go and let them figure it out between themselves and go nuts. TNA and WWE are too heavily scripted which means you start seeing the same moves and combos over and over and over….
I’m sorry Kick-Ass just seems to me to be aimed at the S&M pedophile crowd…..I felt dirty picking up the book…and more dirtier after looking at the trailer…..=(

Did anyone else think it was interesting that we’re getting a DC Nemesis book in the same month as the Millar/McNicen Nemesis book?
Identity Crisis/Identity Disc anyone?

I think Iron Man was so good because they really got everything right. Robert Downey Jr. is a really good actor who can do heavy drama and light comedy in the same scene. Obviously, his real life struggles fit the character’s, although that wasn’t used in the movie, nor should it have been. Just showing Tony holding a drink at the beginning was enough foreshadowing.
The effects were kickass and they didn’t make modifications to the suit.
I think I liked it better than Spider-Man, which also stayed true to the character, costume, etc. is because on the surface Tony Stark is more likeable than Peter Parker. Wangst can be Spider-Man’s middle name and that can grate over the course of a two hour movie. Tony has some guilt and immediately tries to do something about it. Both were great, but I guess it comes down to who I’d rather the hang with, the rich party guy with cool toys, or the modern day Hamlet.
