Guess the Secret Avengers!
The LAST teaser for Marvel’s upcoming Secret Avengers is out, and it is totally Steve Rogers (this one is possibly more definitive than the first one being Beast – hmmm….no, not MORE, but equally definitive)….
Read on to see the rest of the teasers again, now all together, along with my guesses (and my one “no doubt about it” one, which I don’t feel right calling a “guess”), and make your final picks for who the lineup will be!
Click on the images to enlarge!
Here’s the teaser from earlier today, which looks like it’s War Machine…
Here are the ones from earlier in the week….
First we have my “no doubt about it” one, the Beast, followed by my “Pretty darn sure it’s” Moon Knight.
Next is “Pretty darn sure it’s” Valkyrie along with “I think it’s a misleading due to the shoulders” Nova.
What are YOUR picks for the final five (you don’t have to pick the first one, because we all know it’s definitely Beast) Secret Avengers?

This line-up’s gonna be so badass! Crimson Dynamo, Panthro from Thundercats, Sleepwalker, She-Hulk with a Cape, and Jetpack NFL SuperPro! Yeah.

“I am in control of my life”
Judging by the composition of the silhouette, I REALLY want to say [and I really hope] that it is Valkyrie. And it sounds like something that a woman who has the soul of an Asgardian death goddess-type residing within her would say.
At the same time, though, we had a cop out with Loki having been Wanda in Mighty Avengers; and it would be an interesting thing for a woman who has not had a lot of control in her life to say.
So….Valkyrie is the obvious choice, but maybe they’re pulling our chain, and it’s really Wanda?

Also, “I excel through adversity” I want to say it’s either Justice or Noh-Varr.
“I strive for redemption” – Sentry or Moon Knight.
And then War Machine and maybe Bucky-Cap.

There is a new one that says “I Lead by Example.” The figure looks generic, like Ronin. All you can tell is that it’s a character with swollen quadriceps. Possibly someone who uses steroids. Steve Rogers?

My guesses: Black Panther, Taskmaster or Shroud (it’s a toss-up for me), Valkyrie, Marvelman and Gauntlet or Warmachine (another toss-up.)

Not so sure about that being Beast. Hank’s only supposed to have three fingers and a thumb, now, and they’re supposed to be furrier and stubbier. Granted, some artists seem to ignore all of that, but… still. If even Greg Land is making the effort to draw it properly, then, by dammit, Mike Deodato can do it too.

I don’t think the number of fingers on Beast matter. According to Matt Fraction’s X-Men comic, his paws are still separating anyway.

I have to admit “I excel through adversity” does look a lot like Marvelman, but I still don’t believe Marvel’s stupid enough to throw him into the main Marvel Universe.

I’m going with Beast, Moon Knight, Valkyrie, Protector, and War Machine, with Steve Rogers leading the charge. But, if that’s the case, then holy cow is that a dysfunctional lineup.

There’s absolutely NO way that first image is Beast. Beast is a whole lot more stockier than that silhouette. Plus, he doesn’t wear shoes.
It’s more likely Black Panther, followed by Moon Knight. I’m thinking Scarlett Witch for the female, followed by Captain Marvel, and War Machine. I haven’t really figured out who the extra sixth character is, though the quote does point to Steve Rogers (if he’s taking up a new costumed identity after Siege). I get the feeling we’re overlooking other possible characters for that one… like USAgent?

This ad campaign makes me laugh. These are the things overly earnest people say at job interviews. “I focus on the solution not the problem.”
Or it’s the copy on Gatorade bottles. “I excel through adversity.”
“I am in control of my life.” – The kind of thought that runs through a bulimic’s head over the toilet.

I think the flying figure is Jack of Hearts. The shoulders, what looks like a tunic-skirt. The only problem with the idea is that Jack of Hearts didn’t fly with his arms like that… but that’s who it looks like!

According to the Heroic Age promo pic, Beast has long claws and is still barefoot.
That guy in the pic doesn’t have long claws and isn’t barefoot. It could be the beast, but I’m not convinced.

@T. If anything from the Beast finger argument, we know that different creators have different visions of what he looks like. No one says Cheung’s promo is Deodato’s look for him.

Black Panther, Storm, War Machine, Marvel Boy, and Moon Knight.

Even taking the chance that Cheung’s picture isn’t the gold standard, every other person has been drawing Beast with claws for 15 years even before Cheung’s picture. Despite all other inconsistencies, that’s one thing that hasn’t changed.

“Solution”=Beast
“Redemption”=Moon Knight
“Control”=Scarlet Witch
“Adversity”=Wonderman
“Consequences”=War Machine (Rhodey did replace Tony for a while)
“Lead by Example”=Captain America (Steve Rogers)

Aren’t all comics and entertainment basically pointless when it comes down to it? What does “pointless” mean to you? I’m confused. Is it the same as badly written?
Also, this is Brubaker, not Bendis.

“i am in control of my life” could just as easily be scarlet witch….if they ACTUALLY bring her back…… and while i do agree on moon knight i was thinking and after norman’s manipulation of him that it could possibly be Sentry….and i doubt that is steve cause isnt it confirmed that iron man thor and steve are gonna be on the main team of avengers?

February 12, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Well, entertainment is a point in of itself, but I think the point that Alex was making is that some works are able to argue for their own artistic necessity. After reading some comics, you can come away with the feeling that something of importance was said, rather than just that some time was filled. To quote an example close to your own heart, “with great power come great responsibility” is a message that bears hearing. It’s a message that is more than just empty entertainment. Alex’s point, and I think it is largely correct, is that this comic will likely not have any message, and therefore artistically may well not exist.

Since it appears that Clint is finally going to be Hawkeye again, maybe Steve Rogers is going to be Ronin? Persoanlly, I think Ronin is an idea a good 20 years past its freshness date, so I’d rather he have a new identity or just be Steve Rogers, but I could see the Ronin thing happening.

“Aren’t all comics and entertainment basically pointless when it comes down to it?”
Well, I don’t think this is what you meant but “no”. Maus is a popular example of comics tackling a difficult subject while still meeting the appeal of a younger audience. Now DC and Marvel, yea, it’s all $hi@s and giggles, but still that’s all we want.

The “I Strive For Redemption” figure..I’m looking at the left arm that’s hanging down…the fingertips are either clawed or long fingernailed. So I don’t see Moon Knight as the person as many people think it might be. For a longshot, the idea of Taskmaster has potential, perhaps the character is in a hunched postion…sitting on a tree branch perhaps…T’Challa?
Lou

I see someone else already mentioned it, but the second to last one with the “consequences” caption looks a lot like Gauntlet from the Inititative. Have they done anything with him lately?
ZZZ
February 12, 2010 at 10:20 pm
I Lead By Example: I agree with Steve Rogers, possibly as Ronin (the “Leave No Alias Unused” law of comics: if a new character is revealed to be a previously established character in disguise, someone else will eventually pick that identity up as their primary alias – e.g., Eric the Red, the Crimson Cowl, Xorn)
I act upon my convictions: I’m actually going with Gauntlet on this one. I’ve never seen War Machine without a missile pod on his shoulder, and if they’re leaving out details to trick us, then I’m not playing their little game. Nyah.
I strive for redemption: My gut says Cloak – writers love having a team teleporter – but I can’t imagine they’d split him and Dagger up (or kill Dagger on the eve of “The Heroic Age”) so based on that unexplained thing over his right shoulder (possible a weapon), I’m going with Taskmaster. He’s been getting a lot of play recently, so I’m betting he either dies or goes legit during Siege.
I focus on the solution: Really don’t think it’s Beast. I agree number of fingers doesn’t matter (they don’t even always get it right with Nightcrawler) but he’s wearing shoes and that’s not a Hank McCoy I want any part of. I’d say Black Panther but I can’t imagine them putting him on a team but not as leader. I’m going to go out on a limb and say Ant-Man. It’s pretty close to one of his classic poses.
I am in control: Think it’s the Scarlet Witch. Wouldn’t be surprised by Valkyrie. If “I focus on the solution” is Black Panter, it’s probably Storm.
I excel through adversity: This is the one I’m having trouble with. My first thought would be Noh-Varr, but I also think they’d want more than one non-caucasian on the team (I know Noh-Varr isn’t causcasian, but aliens don’t count) so unless the others are Black Panther, Storm and/or Cloak, this might be … I don’t know. Living Lightning? Maybe the Falcon with his wings not shown (see my comments in regards War Machine).

This is a longshot, but I think this Secret Avengers team is going to be a team of “heoes” the avengers might find as a risk being on their roster. These “heroes” either have ties to Osborn’s regime or are just not stable. I’m also looking at characters Bru has connections to somewhat to fill the gaps.
1. Dark Beast – Beast has four fingers. The silhouette has five. Dark Beast somehow redeems himself enough to be considered a chance for redemption.
2. Sentry – He just ripped Ares apart. He won’t be on a wheaties box anytime soon.
3. Scarlet Witch – Finally recovers from the whole Disassembled/House of M fiasco and regains control of her life.
4. Nova/Captain Marvel Boy – Can’t be part of the Commercial Avengers due to his Osborn connections.
5. Bishop – The right arm looks different than the left arm. Gauntlet is a possibility. But what if after Second Coming, Bishop sees the light, and the error of his recent actions. He’s seeking redeption. Who better to give it to him than…
6. Steve Rogers – Not wielding the shield right now, so he’s free. And if anyone could keep an eye on this crew, it’s Steve.
Maybe not the most probable of lineups, but I think it’d be a lot of fun.

I have to say that I disagree with the comments that Nova is on the team. He is simply too busy out in space. That and he couldn’t be on a team with Steve, they would be competing for the same role in the team. That said, I would find a conversation between Steve Rodgers and post-Annihilation Nova very interesting.

I think Redemption is Dr. Voodoo. Look at how long his finger nails are. It has to be him no other character has that long of nails Plus Marvel has been giving him plenty of promotion with him having a series and tons of guest spots in the New Avengers. Isn’t redemption sort of his thing right now too?
I think the other are all too genetic to speculate on, but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for Valkyrie.

He definitely stands like Steve Rogers. I think that is the most probable choice, although I don’t think he looks right without wings on his head. That’s even more important than a shield.
The others are..
Probably Beast
Moon Knight or maybe Taskmaster, or quite possibly somebody else
Valkyrie (really looks like her to me)
Somebody who doesn’t look at all like Nova (Where’s the pointy star-thing on the helmet? I haven’t read his current series aside from the first issue, but in all the old books that point reached high enough that it would clearly show up at this angle)
Why is there only one girl? I don’t like that.

Am I the only one who thinks that Steve Rodgers is gonna be too busy with the regular Avengers title? i’m betting that’s Bucky Barnes. (Unless he didn’t make it out of “The Siege”, of course.)
Anyhoo, my guess (in order of reveal) is:
1: Black Panther (The Beast is too obvious, and too furry)
2: Taskmaster (the “redemption” comment suits him better)
3: Sif (to keep the whole Thor/Cap/Iron Man dynamic going)
4: Captain Marvel (the Genis version)
5: War Machine (the most obvious one here)
6: Bucky (though with Cap back, he’ll probably go back to “Winter Soldier”, or take up the USAgent mantle)
Hey, if I’m right, what do I win?

Fun Guesses:
Example = Nick Fury
Convictions = War Machine
Solution = Black Panther
Redemption = Moon Knight
Control = Wanda
Adversity = Pym
I think Fury could be a lock to run this team. Secret War, Secret Warriors, Secret Avengers. It seems like a natural connection. The picture looks like him and the caption fits. I think this would be a fun lineup, though I really think Pym has done too much to be a role-player on a team like this so I’m probably way off there. Looks like one of his poses though (minus wings).

Moon knight or the Hood (wasn’t there talk of Parker Robbins being in a book where he could get redemption?)
Wanda with reduced powers (now “in control” of her life)

Valkyrie is a really great guess–I hope it is her, frankly, although the cynical part of me suspects it might be Lady Sif because of the upcoming Thor movie.
I’m one of the few who think “I strive for redemption” is a perfect slogan for The Hood, bringing him closer to the original BKV conception of the character. And I guess I’m the only one who thinks “I excel for adversity” is going to be Namor–that silhouette is totally classic flying Sub-Mariner, isn’t it?
Oh, and “I act upon my convictions, regardless of personal consequences” is *totally* Lex Luthor. But apart from that, I got nothing.
brylocke
February 13, 2010 at 10:43 am
I don’t know where anyone’s getting Valkyrie. That makes no sense.
I’m going to say…
-Steve Rogers (though T’Challa was an interesting choice, however, the solits for Doomwar have me rethinking that)
-The Scarlet Witch
-War Machine
-Beast
-Moon Knight
-and that last one is the one thats really puzzling me. I want it to be Nova, but I don’t think Deodato would draw him that way.
But if that is indeed the line-up, then this is the best Avengers line up in years. Fun, bold.

Remember last year when everyone was talking about how they could or couldn’t do a “Black Avengers?” I think it was at CBR, maybe Newsarama, but… this could be it. It’s totally the kind of thing they would try to do after so many said they couldn’t. And of course they’ve gotten around calling then Black Avengers.
Example= Luke Cage
Convictions= Gauntlet
Control= Storm
Solution= Black Panther
Adversity= Falcon
Redemption= Doctor Voodoo
War Machine looked pretty dead in that last issue of Iron Man, but otherwise he could be involved also… and I don’t think Luke Cage’s involvement in Thunderbolts precludes him from being involved here.

Adversity= Mr Immortal jumping off a three story building so he can headbutt one of the Wrecking Crew

I do not think that they would make Jessica Jones an Avenger. There is only so much we can suspend our disbelief. A creature called Galactus who survived the big bang and now eats planets is more realistic than that woman becoming an Avenger. She has the ability to fly but can’t even land! Putting her on a superhero team would be gross negligence. Plus, the woman in that picture has good posture and is not hunching her shoulders. It appears that she eats right and goes to the gym which disqualifies Jessica “Happy Meal” Jones. Finally, the text “I am in control of my life” does not apply to Jessica Jones in any way, shape or form.

My guesses:…
“I forcus on the solution…” is someone Spider-related (either Spider-Man, Eddie Brock as Venom/Anti-Venom or the surviving Scarlet Spider)
“I strive for redemption” is the Shroud.
“I am in control of my life” is Meggan (or Emma Frost or Sif)
“I excel through adversity” is Captain Britain.
“I lead by example” is Steve Rogers in his new costumed identity.
“I act upon my convictions…” is Gauntlet

They can spare one bullethead for the Avengers. It won’t kill them. Plus, it gives the Avengers an excuse to be once again involved in cosmic events without doing the usual thing where Mantis grows out of one of their potted plants and hijacks their lives.
James B Rhoads
February 13, 2010 at 2:54 pm
I think folks are looking more at the image than thinking about what it would mean as a team.
“I lead by example” = Steve Rogers (Captain America role). [Avengers will have Bucky Cap]
“I act upon my convictions . . . ” = War Machine (Iron Man role) [Avengers will have Iron Man]
“I am in control of my life.” = Valkyrie (Thor role) [Avengers will have Thor]
I think those three are right without a doubt. to allow the story to show the circus fun-house mirror version of
“I focus on the solution . . . ” = Venom
“I strive for redemption.” = The Hood (duh . . . its Bendis)
“I excel through adversity.” = (as much as I hate it . . . ) Namor (Need him for the mutant connection).
This gives you the twisted form of “The big three” and the chaos/drama of conflicted “heroes” in the other three. It also connects to the New Avengers, Dark Avengers and the original Avengers.
Timmy
February 13, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Not with the Rift they cannot. If one of them is Noh Varr, they will be involved as well. He has a much better chance. ANyway, this is not the full team. Brubacker said so on his twitter page. I think the woman will be SW and the last one will be Patriot with the first one being Toxin.
This will give us 3 younger heroes who will eventually take the mantles and three classics. Moon Knight, SW and War Machine/Steve in IM type armor due to the teaser showing Steve opening a suitcase with an IM armor in it.
darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 2:59 pm
James,
Good reasoning but focusing on the solution is the scientific Hank Pym role. That would be Beast. Beast can wear shoes. His Astonishing uniform had them. I don’t get the whole “shoe” “finger” debate.
It can’t be the Hood. Dark Reign made him impossible to care about and he fits no pre-established Avengers “role” like Moon Knight does (the Hawkeye weapons guy role).
There only mutant connection is Beast, not Namor. Fish cannot be homosapien superior. Maybe Mermo Superior, but Namor is not a mutant. I don’t care what Stan Lee says. Also, Namor doesn’t fit a slot in the classic Avengers line-up. I say Nova because that’s the Captain Marvel cosmic slot.
The Valkrie, War Machine and Steve Rogers guesses are sound.
darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 3:01 pm
Brubaker probably doesn’t care very much about the Rift, Timmy. Its only positive use as a storytelling device is to keep Rachel Grey trapped in space.
Zoom
February 13, 2010 at 3:11 pm
I see that the flying character is Pym (with his wings cropped) like other observant posters here. Also notice around and between the leg area, it looks like the tail of his coat, combine that with other things that have been mentioned (the gauntlets, the shoulders, the imperfection on the should where the wings were cropped), it all points to Pym.
Other guesses for line up:
Steve Rogers, Cloak, Wanda, War Machine, Beast.

darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 3:19 pm
The Black Panther always leaps with his knees together. Beast always leaps with his legs open; that is his iconic look. Also, there are no breasts on that picture as far as I can tell and the Black Panther is a woman.
They should make T’Challa into Ronin!

February 13, 2010 at 3:20 pm
The caped figure is clearly The Sentry. “Redemption” being the key word (think about what he did in Siege #2, plus the whole Void thing).

Roger Lockwood
February 13, 2010 at 3:35 pm
1) Steve Rogers or Ares (back from the dead)
2)War Machine, or Gauntlet (the reference to consequences could be about being with the Initiative and then the resistance)
3) It has to be Hank Pym, growing in size
4) Scarlet Witch, Moon knight or Taskmaster (?) – Each could want redemption
5) Ms. Marvel, who has often felt not in control of her life
6) Noh-Varr, or Protector, as he is going to be called. The only other one it reminds me of is Namor.
darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 3:38 pm
You don’t have to apologize for disagreeing with me. Valkrie is most certainly in her iconic look which is “uptight.” Valkrie and Beast are the most recognizable characters there. I can see how one would feel doubt about picking the others, but those two seem obvious IMHO. That is the intuition I have about it borne out of 25 years of reading these books. It “looks” like Beast.
I just can’t see them using the Black Panther. To be an Avenger you have to be willing to share things like the cure for cancer. T’Challa puts WAKANDAN interests before everything else. We also know that the only reason he ever joined the Avengers and the FF was to spy on them for WAKANDA.
Focusing on solutions and not problems is Beast’s MO. That is why he keeps committing genocide. He uses science without ethical qualms. The quote and the picture seem to fit him, whereas T’Challa feels like a stretch in both cases.
Danny Potter
February 13, 2010 at 4:10 pm
well i wasn’t apologizing for disagreeing with you, i was apologizing for not clarifying that i was refering to the male Black Panther. anyway i don’t see how the quote is more Beast than T’Challa if this were a more international avengers then BP would fit right in as long as they are dealing with international threats and not american ones. Im not trying to say that it IS T’Challa but im also don’t see how everyone is willing to put their money on the line for it to be Beast just because he was in a “Heroic Age” teaser image.

I am pretty positive that Beast will not be on the team since this team is gonna be a secret team most likely and he is opposed to Black Op style teams. And Nova won’t be on the team either, will be Noh-Varr most likely.
darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 4:27 pm
I understand now, Danny. That’s if this title is the one to replace Mighty Avengers – the ones who represent the whole world. But even so, if that one guy is Moon Knight then you already have someone from Africa. Also, some people are guessing War Machine or Gauntlet for the other guy (I think it’s Iron Man – one of the big three in charge of a team each). That would make it a very African-American dominated team.
darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 4:29 pm
Timmy, I can’t imagine Bendis giving up Noh-Varr to Brubaker. He wants to write the cockroach alien himself.
Beast is very Black Ops. He recently killed several thousand Skrulls, decimated an alternate earth and killed Forge. You don’t get much more bloodthirsty than that.
Nick
February 13, 2010 at 4:44 pm
I still have to say that the lead by example is Fury. Sentry is a good guess as to the redemption. The first one looks like Gorilla Man to me but I dont read Atlas so I dont know if the quote would fit him. The female looks like Emma or Storm.
Mary Warner
February 13, 2010 at 4:46 pm
I never heard of Beast commiting genocide. That seems so out of character.
I didn’t know Moon Knight was from Africa, either. I know he’s spent a lot of time there, but that’s not the same thing.

February 13, 2010 at 4:46 pm
Sentry will be dead after Siege, so I can’t see him striving for “redemption”
darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Beast has committed a tiny bit of genocide. He killed thousands in the X-Men Secret Invasion mini by designing a biological weapon to kill anyone of the Skrull species. He also killed millions in the Astonishing X-Men “Ghost Boxes” arc.
Moon Knight is basically Egyptian. He wasn’t born there but he was reborn there.
Timmy
February 13, 2010 at 4:52 pm
That is not black ops. And he did not kill Forge, Forge was dead before he fired the laser.
Black ops is under the radar missions, like X-Force, which he opposed drastically. Noh-Varr seems much more likely than Nova. Nova and all the Nova Corps are mainstays in the cosmics. Especially Nova. And, Beast is an ethical scientist, one of the differences between him and Dark Beast.
darknessatnoon
February 13, 2010 at 4:56 pm
Forge was killed by the laser. Storm said he was “dead already” in a metaphorical sense because he insulted her. That’s apparently not how you talk to the Queen of Wakanda.
I think from the stance of philosophy of ethics, Dark Beast is arguably more ethical than Beast because he doesn’t posture about being ethical while violating his own beliefs.

From the top:
Steve Rogers (most likely as Ronin, if Clint goes back to Hawkeye)
War Machine (slightly redesigned) or possibly Gauntlet
Constrictor (I don’t know why people are screaming Beast)
Possibly the Sentry, but I’m not sure. Moon Knight is out, he doesn’t care about redemption. In order to “strive for redemption”, you have to feel that you’ve done something wrong. MK has no issue with what he does.
Valkyrie – or whoever that is on the cover of the new Age of Heroes series.
Captain Britain – if only because of the same picture of Age of Heroes, because otherwise, there’s nothing to go on from this teaser/blob. Why do people keep saying Nova? If that were the case, he would have his entire suit redesigned, and he’s too much of a central character for all the Marvel Cosmic Stuff.
Lt. Clutch
February 13, 2010 at 9:13 pm
I think Nova is really Jack of Hearts. The whole adversity angle points to his crappy life: Not being able to live without his costume, being used by S.H.I.E.L.D. and then his own alien race, sacrificing himself for Cassie Lang, and so forth.
Jack is made of energy/matter/what have you, just like Wonder Man. My bet is that he’s finally coming back.

I keep thinking of this from a team angle . . .
Steve Rogers (would love him to be Ronin), War Machine and Valkyrie so make sense and fit the images and the fun-house mirror view of the non-secret avengers with Bucky, Iron Man and Thor. I don’t see Beast in the image, but you always have to have the good doctor character, probs a fair bet . Moon Knight or The Hood, but I favor the Hood because I just don’t like Moon Knight as a team member and if there is a character that needs redemption more than the Hood . . . ugh!
Anyway, big three I am certain of and then you need the doctor, the mutant and the mystic . . . Beast, Namor (I know, he is and he isn’t, but he is connected and can’t you see the fins on his heels?), and The Hood, but could be Dr. VooDoo or Moon Knight on the mystic side just as well.
My last thought is you need conflict and drama to tell good stories. Those last three . . . well, one at least needs to be nuts and another needs to have some type of long history and another . . well . . my point isn’t who most looks like the images, but who most helps tell the best stories.

I think that it might be Bishop instead of War Machine. But I don’t know where he is in the X-men stories. Last I checked he was chasing Cable in time. And I think Hawkeye is on the Avengers team, so I doubt that the first one is Ronin. I am pretty sure is Steve Rogers in some new form. I agree I don’t think that its Beast either. Not sure who though. I think the Moon Knight one is good, but it might be The Hood. And maybe the female is Emma Frost? See, i don’t know what happens at the end of seige, but I think those quotes have something to do with some of them.

It’s obvious to me the one with the cape and long hair is Race Bannon of Jonny Quest fame since he came out of the closet and went transsexual.Transsexuality is his superpower by the way.The thing that convinced me of this was the picture every body is calling the Beast.That is actually Huckleberry Hound because what would an Avenger team be without a Pet Avenger on board as mascot? His superpower is that he has blue fur which is what confused everybody into thinking he was the Beast.It was the Hanna Barbera connection during an old Malibu/Amalgam/Marvel crossover non-event that everybody forgot about back in the day when those guys would crossdress…I mean crossover with anybody.The character one individual thinks is Namor is actually The Gorton Fisherman because as Raimi proved what is a Marvel event without plenty of product placement ads?War Machine is actually Red Rock em Sock Em Robot because that toy line is next to make it to the big screen for no reason whatsoever other than sheer profit just like Transformers. Hope this helps you guys out a little bit.

Unless Brubaker is being purposely deceptive, #4 is NOT NOH-VARR.
He has said on his Twitter that #4 is “not a Dark Avengers character.”
So unless it ends up as Noh-Varr and he says “hee hee, techinically, Noh-Varr quit the team so he wasn’t really a DA character, was he??”
…then it’s not Noh-Varr.
For #4, I’m going with the the out there but plausible guess of the Falcon, with his wings purposely left out of the shadow.

I’m really convinced that #4 is Hank Pym. Brubaker did include him in Cap Reborn, maybe that was a bit of foreshadowing. Anybody have any reasons for me why it WOULDN’T be Hank Pym. The silloutte (with wings clipped) looks ALOT like Pym, and the adversity phrase fits him well.

For those guessing Noh-Varr or Venom or whoever, Brubaker has already stated that no Dark Avengers will be on the team, so Venom and Noh-Varr are ruled out (Venom was already ruled out, of course, because it is clearly Beast).

First one is Spider Man. I’d love for it to be Beast, but Spidey is a no brainer for the Avengers.
Next is Bob. Who has more to make up for than him?
Next is Wanda.
Hank.
Rhodey.

Jumping into the pool…
Solution = Beast
(A thinking man- and all the pics of him in the new “Heroic age” promos got rid of the CAT mutation)
Redemption = The Hood
(second guess = Taskmaster)
(third guess = The Void)
(fourth guess = Green Goblin)
Control = Valkyrie
(second guess = Scarlet Witch)
Adversity = Noh-Varr (They’re calling him “PROTECTOR” now)
Consequences = War Machine
(Iron Man 2 is coming out with Rhodey in it, right? SO that makes sense)
Lead = Luke Cage
Anyway, those are my half-assed choices.

“I forcus on the solution…” Venom on someone new or Beast
“I strive for redemption” Strange
“I am in control of my life” is Emma Frost, if Cyclops dies during the X-Related thing or there’s a big shake up, it’s a bit of a long shot but the quote is dead on.
“I excel through adversity” probably NorVar
“I lead by example” is Steve Rogers or Nick Fury
“I act upon my convictions…” War Machine

Given that he has no claws and is not barefoot, it’s not “clearly” Beast. Possibly Beast, sure, but not clearly.

Actually I take it back. Now that I look at the shading, the “blackening” of the hands and feet look suspicious, like they may have rounded out the feet and fingertips to avoid being too obvious. The borders are very jagged and odd looking in those areas. It may clearly be Beast after all.

jmurphy your choices were great,but I would throw in Cozy Powell and Tony Williams (from his Lifetime Band era ).The danger here is DC and Marvel will crossover event us to death with a Secret Avengers/Brightest Day tie-in to bring Bonham,Powell,and Williams back from the dead.

Lead by example: Steve Rogers, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Convictions: War Machine
Solutions: Iron Fist
Redemption: The Shroud (or Scarlet Witch. Don’t know why we’re assuming it’s male considering this Deodato art)
Control of Life: Songbird (I think it’s a curve-ball, and what looks like a cape is her sonic wings)
Excel through adversity: I think it’s Protector/Captain Marvel/Marvel Boy (or whatever Noh-Varr’s going by these days)

I would like them to be Steve Rogers, War Machine, Beast, Moon Knight, Wanda, and Noh Varr (please Marvel, try hard to do business with Alan Moore before making something stupid out of Miracleman). But since Ed Brubaker is writing it, so everyone is gonna read it anyway (me included), I think the lineup will be pretty lame just like New Avengers. I woulndn’t be surprised to see Spider-Man, Wolverine, or even both… I liked the stevesecret.jpg. Brilliant!

AVENGERS: S.H.I.E.L.D.(First Strike/Black OPs Team)
Nick Fury, Captain America, Ms Marvel, Black Widow, Ant-Man(Hank Pym), War Machine, Scarlet Spider, and The Falcon
I’m sticking with Cap, Marvel, Ant-Man, and War Machine as Secret Avengers.

5. War Machine, Gauntlet or Justice
6. Steve Rogers or Nick Fury

This is SO…
…Spider-Man (MAYBE Beast) but, I’m thinking Spidey now, because it would make sense to take him out of the spotlight of the main Avengers team for a while.
…Sentry, after the recent Norman manipulations in Dark Avengers how can he not seek redemption?
…Scarlet Witch, maybe, the cape and boot silhouette pull me that way, but the belt…well, I don’t ever recall her wearing a belt, but the quote is spot on.
…Gravity, I SO want this to be him, and he DOES excel through adversity
…War MAchine…or MAYBE Gauntlet, but I’m leaning toward War Machine
…PATRIOT! Patriot would be awesome. The silhouette fits as well. With the boots and the old polo/aviator looking pants, and the shortened gloves…kinda screams Patriot to me.
just guesses.

Nobody thinks the “Solution” one is Daredevil?
Solution”= DAREDEVIL
“Redemption”= GREEN GOBLIN / THE HOOD
“Control”=SCARLET WITCH
“Adversity”= HANK PYM (why not, eh?)
“Consequences”= NICK FURY in IRON MAN ARMOR
“Lead by Example”= WINTER SOLDIER
My list is the best so far.

Scarlet Witch: Because of the phrase. Remember she was out of control during the last 7 years.
Beast: The phrase sounds like Beast, very pragmatic.
War Machine: It looks like him or Iron man, but Iron man will be on the Avengers book, so War Machine is left.
Captain Marvel: The one who is flying looks like him, and it would be probable to have him inside the rooster.}
I’m missing two: The first one is looking for redemption, so it will probably be a villain (Hobgoblin? Demogoblin? Tasmaker? Moonknight?), the second one is a Hero, a symbol.(Luke Cage?Captain America?)

I like the Hobgoblin and War machine bets, they’re well known and Ed would write them well, but where the helm are they going to come from? 2 Issues of Siege left and out of left and right field are those guys? Secret Avengers! The Scarlet Witch and a bunch of other crazy motherlovers.
Q: Who is more secret? The Secret Avengers or the Secret Warrios?
Imtheman
March 12, 2010 at 11:11 am
My guess for the secret avengers are:
steve rodgers
Noh Varr (new captain marvel)
Beast
Scarlet Witch
Dr. Strange
War Machine.
If you ask me, the “I strive for redemption” guy is Doc strange. Moon Knight hasnt done anything really important to the rest of the Marvel U since civil War. Doc strange makes more sense. I mean after WWH and losing his title in new evengers, being on a team might be an easy way for him to redeem himself. Plus if that is the scarlet witch on the team, doc strange is going to be the guy to keep an eye on her.
Jake
March 14, 2010 at 3:39 pm
Avengers: Cap(bucky)/Spider woman/Iron Man/Hawkeye/Thor
New Avengers: Spider-man/ Wolverine/ Luke Cage/The Thing/Jessica Jones
so….In my opinoin, they memebers are:
Steve Rogers (with a New Name and Head of SHEILD)
War Machine
Scarlet Witch (or Storm)
Moon Knight
Beast (or Balck Panther)
Captain Marvel (Noh-Varr)
Jake
March 14, 2010 at 3:44 pm
You know, I agree with Imtheman. Moon Knight would be cool, but he’s really never done anything in the mainstream that needs redeeming. I Agree that Dr. Strange would make more sense, would be cooler, and if the girl is Wanda, could help her control her powers.
Steve Rogers (with a New Name and Head of SHEILD)
War Machine
Scarlet Witch (or Storm)
Dr. Strange
Beast (or Black Panther)
Captain Marvel (Noh-Varr)

Just a thought, but could this be an international “strike force” to take care of things outside the U.S.? Kinda like Osborne did with the Dark Avengers some. If that’s the case the Black Panther would make sense, and the woman could be Sabra. To me it makes sense, Avengers for the big time world saving missions, New Avengers for the gritty street level stuff, and Secret Avengers for the stuff outside of U.S. borders.
Drew
March 27, 2010 at 7:11 am
I’m Pretty sure the redemption is Task Master, N i’m in control of my life is emma frost. The I excel is Iron Man. I lead by example in Cap America… Steve not bucky
gregg erickson
April 2, 2010 at 8:46 am
I believe that these are the choices for the secret avengers:
Steve Rogers- I lead by example
War Machine- “I act upon my convictions regardless of personal consequences.”
Noh-Varr- “I excel through adversity.”
Spitfire- “I am in control of my life.”
They’re bringing Scarlet Witch back in Young Avengers mini later on. Also one of the M-13 team is staying in states to join Avengers. I doubt it will be Black Knight who will be training his squire. Jacqueline has worked well with Steve on Invaders. (Now that I think of it Adversity Quote could be Human Torch from Invaders, but I’m still going with Noh-Varr). She is in control of being bitten by Vampire.
Moon Knight – “I strive for redemption.” Who better to learn how to be a super hero from than Steve?
Black Panther (T’Challa)- “I focus on the solution, not the problem.”
mikee Guns
April 7, 2010 at 9:29 pm
1. Steve Rogers
2. War Mahine
3. Beast
4. Marvel Boy or Wonderman or Vision They could be leaving out the cape or wondermans hair
5. Justice or CLoak and Dagger (Sentry dead after siege def) im leaning away from moon Knight bc steve rogers hate him (civil war)
6. Scarlet Witch or songbird with beast on the team emma frost would be to many x men on the roster
Also i think no var is gonna be on the new avengers so it be wierd for him to be on the secret avengers. Pym doing avengers academy.
