Cross-Hatchings for February 2010
Yes, it’s that time again. Not a column, just a bunch of little column-ettes. A couple of Captain America observations, some pulp stuff, and a pair of puzzles — one literary, one visual. Enjoy.
Top Five Raddest Comics of 2009
At least I got this out before the Oscars. In an effort to try something slightly different with these annual retrospectives, I will now present to you not necessarily the best in comics– I’m not the scholar for that– but the five comics published in the year of our King Kirby 2009 that possessed the [...]
Comic Book Legends Revealed #248
Welcome to the two-hundred and forty-eighth in a series of examinations of comic book legends and whether they are true or false. Click here for an archive of the previous two hundred and forty-seven. Comic Book Legends Revealed is part of the larger Legends Revealed series, where I look into legends about the worlds of [...]
A Year of Cool Comics – Day 49
Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far! Today [...]
What I bought – 17 February 2010
“Beware of faking: people will believe you. People believe those who sell lotions that make lost hair grow back. They sense instinctively that the salesman is putting together truths that don’t go together, that he’s not being logical, that he’s not speaking in good faith. But they’ve been told that God is mysterious, unfathomable, so [...]
Joe the Barbarian #2 Review
Joe the Barbarian, so far through two issues, is shaping up as one of Grant Morrison’s most straightforward and heartwarming series since We3. And Sean Murphy and Dave Stewart are simply amazing!
Congrats to Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and Dan Didio on Their Promotions
Comic Book Resources is now reporting that Jim Lee and Dan Didio will be Co-Publishers for DC Comics, replacing the outgoing Paul Levitz. Geoff Johns will be the “Chief Creative Officer.” It’s very good for DC to lock Johns up, as he is very valuable to their superhero line of comics.
Scenes from a Box of Comics: Part the Second
And now, back to your irregularly-scheduled programming (how does Burgas write reviews so quickly?). Three trade paperbacks beneath the fold: Human Target: Chance Meetings, Unwritten vol. 1, and The Veil.
A Year of Cool Comics – Day 48

02/17 — Cynical Comic Book Guy Says…
In Spider-Woman #6, Agent Brand says that Norman Osborn doesn’t know S.W.O.R.D. exists. Now, this is obviously a mistake. What she meant was that retailers and readers don’t know S.W.O.R.D. exists… (With apologies to Mr. Gillen and Mr. Sanders…)
Committed: Architectural Permanence Vs. Superheroic Preponderance
As a Londoner born and bred, and a San Franciscan for the last 14 years, at times I’m acutely aware of the differences between the two cities. Of particular interest are the cultural and environmental differences between America and Britain. After a long absence, a few days ago I arrived back on British soil. Immediately [...]
Meta-Messages #4
This is the fourth in a series (of indefinite length and regularity) explaining the context behind (using reader danjack’s term) “meta-messages.” A meta-message is where a comic book writer comments on/references the work of another comic book in their comic. Each time around, I’ll give you the context behind one such “meta-message.” Today we look [...]
A Year of Cool Comics – Day 47
Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far! Today, [...]
Danielle Leigh’s Reading Diary — How to Capture a Martini
Makoko Tateno’s How to Capture a Martini is one of those yaoi works where everyone’s emotional settings are always calibrated for maximum intensity.
