Bring on the bad guys, I say.

Wolverine vs. White Queen? Is there a “shoot myself in the face” option instead?

I guess I’ll skip that one and let the true believers duke it out.

Now I’m terrified Wolverine and Darkseid are going to win here. I’m trying to figure out some way to continue voting for Kitty.

Here are my votes, same criteria (Character interest plus story engine) as before. Again, as before, only Bronze Age continuity will be used for evaluation.

1. Wolverine: No contest. Wolverine is a fascinating character (Cf. the Claremont/Miller WOLVERINE limited series) with a great story engine (mutant plus espionage plus military plus X-Men). Emma FRost, in contrast, is just a lingerie wearing telepath.

2. Nightcrawler: Tough call. Darkseid is a great creation, but, as the ultimate incarnation of evil, he is rather one note (Although it is a great note). Kurt simply possesses greater depth as a character.

Wolverine, fine, ok.
Between Nightcrawler and Darkseid, no contest. Darkseid’s had a massive influence on comics; Nightcrawler is an interesting supporting character.

I voted for Wolvie over White Queen, too, but trajan you’re (humorously, yes) shortchanging her: diamond-hard exterior covering-up her vulnerability, bad girl trying to go good and measure up to the love of the noblest x-man, etc. etc. She’s a great character and that was a hard choice (but foregone, yes)

DEco, my Emma Frost evaluation is based on BA continuity alone.

Darksied Is. Emma vs Wolverine was a tough choice, but Deco’s opinion on Emma convinced me she deserved the vote.

Trajan, yeah, I can see that; and a few days ago I was using that parameter too, but for me it’s too limiting (e.g. how can you really judge supes or bats just on their golden age?) — but now I’m looking at the “age” only as the tourney’s organizing structure (era they started in is as good as anything else). But that’s just me. That’s why this is good feature – no rules, baby!

Wolverine, Darkseid. No brainers, both. Wolverine has supported his solo book for years, as well as appearing in hundreds of others. Darkseid is the most compelling villain in the DCU.

Wolverine. Fine. Death not an option. Whatever. A lot of what’s wrong with comics can be tracked back to how he’s been handled (not the character’s fault, obviously, but still true), but hey, him over the White Queen.

Nightcrawler/Darkseid is tough, but I went with Kurt. Too much range as one character whose gone from conscience of a team to leader to doubting whether he belonged to coming into his own with Excalibur. Plus, the faith based characteristics add a dimension you don’t see, even when it’s occasionally misused.

As disappointing as it is to vote against my last remaining pick from the last round in this bracket, I’ve gotta pick Wolverine over Emma. Nothing against lingerie-clad telepaths in general, I just think that Wolvie’s a more interesting character.

I also picked Darkseid over Nightcrawler. While sure, the living embodiment of evil can seem a bit one-note on the surface, when used right, he can be very effective. Just ask any long-time Legion fan.

I voted for the White Queen. Why? Well, Wolverine is a good character but so is Emma. I share Deco’s perception of the poll’s “Ages” as mostly a criteria for grouping characters, so I’m considering the characters’ development over the years.

And both Wolverine and Emma have been fleshed out considerably since their creations, in different directions – Wolverine was initially a blank slate with an interesting gimmick and lots of attitude, and his ‘mysterious past’ was a big part of his appeal; by now that mysterious past has been exhaustively mined and it’s not so mysterious anymore, but he’s still a good character (but it’s probably best to ignore some revealed gems from that revealed history, like Romulus).

On the other hand there’s Emma Frost, who at first was a generic villainess with a familiar power-set and a sexy costume… and over the years she became more than that, at first seeking redemption by helping Banshee in “Generation X”, then killing her sister (who had engineered an explosion that killed one of Emma’s students), then going away to rebuild her life in Genosha, surviving its destruction and only then finally joining the X-Men. And that was Frost’s turning point, as she fell in love with a good man who makes her want to be a better woman (and she brings out the best in him too). Emma had a long character arc from where she began to where she is now, but right now she’s one of Marvel’s best female characters, a layered and fascinating heroine. I voted for Emma Frost because she’s underrated. Wolverine is probably going to win anyway, but I’m showing some love for the lady in white.

Between Nightcrawler and Darkseid… don’t get me wrong, Nightcrawler is a great character. But Darkseid IS. He’s Jack Kirby’s greatest contribution to the DC universe, the living embodiment of evil and oppression. So he gets my vote. As Buttler said, Bring on the bad guys.

You know who likes Nightcrawler?

People that suck. That’s who.

I went with wolvie im just not an emma fan sorry.
I went with kurt and he is one of my favorite xmen alongside beast. i dont see in a real fight how he could win but i have faith.

If Kurt wins do you think the current awful X-writers will pull him off the wallpaper? Probably not… =(

speaking of nightcrawler, did you see his intro caption in Pixie Strikes Back #1? — “Nightcrawler. Teleporter. Old lady in training” (IIRC).

Hilarious. wrong. but hilarious. Oh Kathryn Immomen you card

remember when he was portrayed as a swashbuckling ladies-man? someone oughta update him as a swashbuckling, womanizing… priest. seriously.

Logan is a victim of his own popularity. He has devolved to self-parody over the last twenty years.

And Kurt is a refreshing change of pace in the comic genre of posturing and posing by being very human, even though he’s a mutant.
