A Year of Cool Comics – Day 242

Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!

Today we look at Ted Naifeh’s delightful series from Oni Press, Polly and the Pirates!

Enjoy!

This series opens in a boarding school where a little girl is recounting the adventures of a pirate princess…

Anastasia gets in trouble, of course, but her friend and fellow boarding schoolmate, Polly, helps her out, as she always does. Later that night, ‘Stasia plots an escape from the school and part of her plan involves Polly getting out of her room to get some warm milk, as Polly can ALWAYS be trusted. It doesn’t work out so well for ‘Stasia…

We learn just how wrong that last comment from Anastasia is later in the issue when Polly is KIDNAPPED BY PIRATES!!!

The leader of the group pulls her aside and makes a major revelation…

Pretty cool, huh?

Now this being Polly, she is too respectable to go along with this, so she makes a daring escape and gets back to the school in time to avoid being missed (and she also turns the table on her other schoolmate, Sarah, who is quite lame and is always tattling on Anastasia)…

Of course, things don’t go according to plan, and now Polly is a prisoner of…

She escapes the BAD pirates, too, but she learns that there is honor to being a pirate. I won’t spoil the transformation for you (or the ending of the six-issue series), but I’ll give you a glimpse of what happens when Polly embraces her pirate heritage…

Pretty nifty, huh?

This was collected into one collection in 2006 (thanks to reader David for confirming!).

Ted Naifeh sure is great.

Oh yes, it came out in a collection in 2006.

Thanks, David!

I bought the collection for my daughter and really enjoyed it myself. Great series as is his Courtney Crumrin. I’ve been hoping that Naifeh would do a sequel to Polly, but it looks like he’s too busy with other projects so far.

Wow, this looks amazing!! I really hope I might get a chance to read it sometime.

Naifeh is doing a sequel, coming out this fall, I think. He’s not doing the art, though.

Robbi Rodriguez (who drew MAINTENANCE for Oni) is drawing the second POLLY AND THE PIRATES book and the last I heard, is getting close to finished at his end.

Wow! I’ve never heard of this but I’m absolutely in love with the artwork – looks like a charming story too.
