what a great feature! Thanks, CBR.

When did the Thing first say, “it’s clobberin’ time!”

I’ve been wondering when that penny showed up for YEARS. Out of curiosity, where’d the T-Rex come from?

Ima liking diz column! Sum mo pleez!

Tell me, when Scott Summers get the nickname, Slim? Thank you.

How about that Luger (or generic pistol, whatever) that Dr. Doom keeps on his hip? Has anyone EVER seen him use it, and when?

How about the first appearance of Arkham Asylum, and who were the first villains we saw put in there?

A couple of Logan-oriented suggestions: first “Fastball Special” and first “best there is at what I do…”

Another winner idea, Brian! Kudos!

Some potential items to consider:

First “Hulk smash!” and/or “Puny humans”

First time Lois Lane suspected Clark Kent was Superman

First time someone quit the FF “for good”.

First time a DC/Marvel hero cried on panel. (Green Arrow/Vision spring to mind, but were they the first?)

First Superman robot

First superhero wedding, birthday party, funeral

First mention of Ben Grimm’s Aunt Petunia (I remember her first on-panel appearance :) )

First bona fide Kryptonian other than Superman to be known to have survived (there were some false alarms I believe)

First appearance of the headline “Spiderman: Threat or Menace?”

First time a regular supporting character was revealed to secretly be a villain (Whirlwind in Avengers? Fosdick in Spiderman?)

Well, I hope some of these are of interest :)

The first appearance of Wonder Woman’s invisible jet seems like a good one.

Back in the 80’s I worked in a comic store. We used to have a section of our back issue wall featuring covers with Thor saying sentences ending in “and yet all my powers can not save me/her/him!”

I also did a wall of “Oh Bitter Victory” covers once.

Also the history of “You don’t have to tell me twice leader-man!” might be fun.

When did Hulk learn that he liked beans? I remember him eating them with Crackajack Jackson during the Trimpe era anything earlier?

Paul S it was crackerjack who started Hulk on beans

[…] part of our When We First Met month, which features the first appearance of different […]

I’m sure I saw this discussed before, maybe in another feature, but:
In Spider-Man’s origin story in Amazing Fantasy #15, the famous phrase “With great power, there must come… Great responsibility!” is used only in a narrative caption. At what point did it become something Uncle Ben once said to Peter Parker and thus a part of Spider-Man’s ethos?
I wrote an essay on the two Spider-Man music LPs of the 1970’s, and I note that the first one (The Amazing Spider-Man: From Beyond the Grave!) in 1972 has Peter Parker’s narration remember that phrase. Was it in the comics earlier?

A few suggestions:

First time Wolverine said (or was referred to as): “(I’m) the best there is at what I do.”

First clue of Mystique being related to Nightcrawler.

First appearance of Captain America’s round shield.

First appearance of the half Spider-Man/half Peter face.

First time Green Arrow and Black Canary had a date (or referred to as a a couple).

First appearance of any of the Charlton characters in a DC comic book.

First mention of a Multiverse in both Marvel and DC.

First appearance of the Charlton characters in a DC comic book (as themselves, I mean–not including Watchmen) would be Crisis on Infinite Earths #1.

The all-time classic clichéd story title:

First time Alan Scott said the “In Brightest Day, in Blackest Night…” oath.

First time Lana Lang appeared as an adult.

First time Superman exclaimed “Great Krypton!”

First instance someone went “YI-I-I-I-I!” I’ve seen Marvel and DC use that cry on occasion.

The first time another artist riffed on the “KRAKADOOM!” sound effect.

“If This Be My Destiny!”

The first time Superman swore by a Kryptonian god, as in “Great Rao!”

I have a Reader’s Digest from 1935 that condensed an article:”Marijuana: Threat or Menace.” Don’t know if the phrase goes back farther than that.

The first appearance of Robin’s “Holy _____, Batman”

Ooh! I got a good one!

The first time Superman and Batman actually participated in a JLA mission (rather than get tied up in other commitments).

How about the first mention of Smallville?

And the first mention of Smallville being in Kansas? Apparently it was Superman The Movie that first put Smallville in Kansas! Now it seems like it’s always been in that state.

When was Batman first referred to as the “Dark Knight”?

Something that I’ve been dying to know: you’ve featured the first appearence of the Wayne Foundation, but when did Wayne Enterprises (or WayneCorp or whatever its name was way back when) first appear?

I remember Spidey and the Human Torch meeting on the Statue of Liberty. Johnny would leave a fire message in the sky asking Spidey to meet him at “usual place”. That might be a good thing to add to this.

Do you think you could invert this list so that the latest item is at the top, please? It’s the standard on most news sites and blogs. No one should have to scroll though a bunch of old material to enjoy the new stuff.

[…] Sache: When We First Met Archive | Comics Should Be Good! @ Comic Book Resources If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed. (Stanley Kubrick) […]

I’d like to see the first time the Hulk’s cover logo was smashed and any further significant instances of it happening.

First time when Wonder Woman met Superman and Batman. Thank you.

If suggestions are still being taken for future subjects, I have a couple, inspired by a recent reading of the earliest Captain Marvel stories.

1) When was Captain Marvel’s gift from Achilles changed from the original courage to invulnerability? I note that he was nigh invulnerable from the start, but it was at first attributed to the strength of Hercules–his muscles were so dense that mere bullets and knives could not pierce them. (This left the possibility that some areas were more susceptible, and that he might have been killed by–for example–a bullet to the eye. Perhaps this is why he seemed to always keep his eyes closed?)

2) In the first four stories, Captain Marvel cannot fly; he travels by leaping great distances (or, in one story, by hanging on to an airplane). Then, without explanation, in the fifth story he is able to fly from one city to another (his specific itinerary is Washington D.C. to New York to Chicago to San Francisco; at one point he is shown outracing an airplane). Which leads me to wonder: Superman, too, originally traveled by running fast and making mighty jumps. When was he first depicted as actually being able to fly?

After reading a bit more, I have another question: When was Captain Marvel first labeled “the world’s mightiest mortal”? The original version of this, given a hard promotion for awhile, was “world’s mightiest man.”
