The Line It Is Drawn #20 – Comic Book Characters/TV Dramas

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi and Michelle Smith!

The blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account. As an incentive to follow us, if we reach 2,000 followers, I’ll do an extra edition of Comic Book Legends Revealed the week we hit 2,000. At 3,000 followers, I will do another Month of Greatest Stories Ever Told!

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week.

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (all suggestions due by 2:59 PM Eastern on Friday, December 17th): We’re going to have a special edition of The Line It Is Drawn later next week, right before Christmas, and then we’re taking a couple of weeks off (so our artists don’t have to work over the holidays). Here’s the topic for the next edition of The Line It Is Drawn, which will be next Thursday.

It’s a special holiday edition of The Line It Is Drawn – Just name a holiday theme for a comic book character (Justice League caroling, Kitty Pryde lighting a menorah, that sort of thing)

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge:

Team-up/mash-up comic book characters with those from TV dramas.

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

All copyright and trademarks of the following characters are held by their respective owners!

Brad Millette and Rafael Desquitado couldn’t make it this week, so our super-sub Nick Perks is filling in for him! As always, thanks, Nick! You rule!

I just know that our pal BigMike20X6 is freaking out right now because he, too, suggested

Dexter meets the Joker

. I’m just messing with you, Mike, because Nick Perks also decided, just as a lark, to do that sketch, too. Since we were down two guys this week, I figured we might as well share Nick’s drawing, even though Daniel already did it, as well.

Thanks so much to the artists and the suggestion-givers! Now everyone head off to Twitter and give the artists some good options for the next installment!

NOTE: If you wish to participate in the January Reader Art Gallery, you have a few days left to do so! The deadline to send your artwork (based on any of the previous The Line It Is Drawn topics, although I’d prefer you choose ones from November) to me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com is 6pm Eastern time on Thursday, January 13th! We received a lot of drawings last month – I’d like to see a bunch this month, too!

Awesome! Especcially liked Daniel’s Dexter/Joker.

Nick Perks, ladies and gentlemen. Nick F**king Perks! seriously, that Xena and Red Sonja piece is amazing! great attention to anatomy and the colors are just fantastic! seriously. fave piece hands down.

Everyone else totally brought their A-game, with Caanan’s Awkward teen years of the JLA, and the fact that a meeting between the kingpin and tony soprano could have gone a lot more violently.

oh and Nick just HAD to teach me how likenesses are drawn properly. : )

Nice work guys. Nick, thanks again for the fill-in, probably better than what I would have come up with. I’ll be back next week, I promise!

I think it is funny that both Dexter meets the Joker has Dexter killing the Joker…. I would have guessed it would turn out the other way around.

Daniel – you are too kind. Funny you should compliment me on MY colors – For color, composition and characterization your piece is just perfect.

Wow, what fantastic artwork from everyone. I’m stoked to see one of my ideas get chosen. Nick and Daniel blew it out of the park with their versions of Joker on Dexter’s table.

Wow, a special shout out this week…thanks Brian ^_^
For the record, though, I also suggested the Kingpin/Sopranos idea as well, seems great minds think alike.
Brilliant work all around.

Freaks ‘n Geeks/JLA is just great.

Oh, man, that was awesome, guys. Glad that that’s the one of mine picked!

Holy gosh vindaloo, i couldn’t have imagined my Xena/Sonja suggestion would be so marvelously realized. Well freaking done, Nick!

I got a good chuckle out of the Sopranos one, too.

And man, I’ve been meaning to actually watch Freaks & Geeks — and Dexter, for that matter. As if the Netflix queue isn’t overloaded enough already!

It’s too bad the holiday edition is happening this year after Hanukkah is already over, but whaddaya gonna do? At least it’s just in time for Pancha Ganapati.

Great job guys. I never miss “The Line it is drawn” and it is worth it because of the great work the artists do each time.

Wow, that Freaks & Geeks piece is amazing, especially Harris as Martian Manhunter, which might be the most perfect casting of any character. And terrific work making Darkseid look like Jason Segel but also still exactly like Darkseid! I wouldn’t have thought it was possible.

Milly + fishnets = WHAAAAAT

Oh man, such good stuff here.

All of these were great stuff, but that Freaks & Geeks/JLA one was just amazing. Loved the casting of all the ‘freaks” (Luthor as Daniel, Cheetah as Kim Kelly, the aforementioned Darkseid as Segal, and Ultra-Humanite as Ken) and the Millie/Lindsay (complete with army jacket) conflict in the center. Man, I miss that show.

Magnificent, guys. Holy crap.

Nice work as always guys, I’m always amazed to see the high quality of the stuff you come up with on such short notice. Of course I’m delighted as well to see one of my suggestions used, even if it isn’t the one I’d most like to see rendered. Ifbonly I could draw.

Another great batch.

The Xena/Red Sonja piece got a chuckle.

The Freaks & Geeks/JLA piece is a gift that keeps giving. The body language on Lex Luthor cracks me up for some reason.

I love the expressions on the Quantum Leap duo. The Dean Stockwell is amazing.

Weird, I commented on this entry a couple of hours ago & it still hasn’t shown up yet. I’ve noticed in the last few weeks that whenever I comment at home, it takes a while to show up, whereas my comments from the office pop up immediately. Makes me wonder if my at-home ISP is on some list for all comments to be screened or something.

I’m glad people have like the Dexter/Joker pieces, and its actually really cool to see that the same scene can be seen through such different eyes. It really makes you appreciate artistic vision and the what nots alot more.

oh and thanks, Nick, I’m glad you liked the drawing (I’ve had my conflicts with the piece but i’ve decided to accept it as just another drawing.)

oh, and i’m in agreement with everyone else on caanan’s piece, VERY good art and characterization.

I love the Xena and Sonja one. I’m really wondering which choice she’s going to go with.

Awesome work everybody!

The more I see, the more I dig Caanan Grall.

Yeah, things like that happen to me also. Sometimes my comments come up right away, sometimes not all, sometimes hours later. I mean, I never really pissed anyone off that I know about, or got any warnings or anything, so I don’t get it.

I’ve been having the same problem.

Wow, Freaks and Geeks JLA just perfect.

Thanks for all the comments, guys! I’m a huge Freaks and Geeks fan so it was a no-brainer for my pick this week, and yeah, Nick/Darkseid was the harder character to nail. Just had to capture that goofy, drummer boy charm. If I had more time I probably would have put Alan in there as Guy Gardner.

And man, you guys keep upping the awesome levels each week. I mean, Nick, you did two? You monster!

Also, I love how the two Joker/Dexter pics have the same basic idea, but different layouts. It was just meant to be that the Joker would never win. You can’t defeat the collective consciousness.

Ok Caanan, I officially love you!

Freaks and Geeks is my absolute favourite TV show and even though my knowledge of the JLA is not great your piece is just gorgeous. The expression on Milly’s face is just perfect.

Everything is so good as usual this week but yeah F+G is always gonna be a winner with me. Combine it with Caanan Grall and its ridiculously awesome.

Chaz, is that Matt Murdock at the table behind AJ?

@Big Mike: Yup! Good eye, man! I was hoping somebody would catch that! Thought I’d throw him in there for a slight cameo.

Awesome, I love little Easter Eggs like that.

My other question is this… when will they actually do a Xena/Red Sonja crossover… probably never, but that would rock!.

Seriously amazing work by all, Caanan’s stands out for me again, stellar work. The Millie thing is so perfect.

You can’t say stuff like that post-Beaton! Naughty, naughty.

Would love to see comtinuation of that xena red sonja!

Looooooved the Joker/Dexter one by Daniel Irizarri…!! :D

Almost didn’t noticed DD/Matt Murdock until Big Mike mentioned this.

Plus, the Freeks & Geeks/JLa is also good.

Ugh. Not just one but TWO Dexter pieces? And a Sopranos too? With all the good shows in the history of television and we get THESE? Where’s Magnum PI, The A-Team etc? Man, Tv sucks these days. -_- Even the one based on a show I truly loved- Quantum Leap- fails because of the unimaginative concept and crude art.

I love Canaan’s work, the only thing that keeps me from enjoying it fully is that I’ve never seen Freaks and Geeks so I don’t get the joke.

The Xena/Red Sonja one is almost perfect except for Xena’s face. But the art was wonderful so I’ll pick it as my favorite this time.

(Btw, this brings out a crazy thought- Sonja is supposed to surrender herself only to the man who can beat her in a fight (a very stupid idea yes) so what happens if a WOMAN beats her? Especially if she isn’t lesbian or Bi.

I see that smiley face on Dexter’s shirt.

That smiley face on Dexter’s shirt is a nice touch. :)

@Sijo — Just curious, do you like anything? It seems that a majority of your comments are derogatory comments. If you don’t like it, stop coming back.

Dexter is no match for the Joker. Even the Caesar Romeo Joker.

I have to disagree with chap – The Joker is only so successful because everyone helps him to be (e.g. Joker shoots 4 good cops in the head and later on surgeons battle to save his life).
Dexter wouldn’t be so cooperative.
(Alternatively I’m just sick of the Joker getting away with it and would LOVE this to happen to him… WOW that would be good)

@ Big Mike: Yes, I like *plenty* of stuff. If it seems that most of my comments are derogatory it’s because complaints tend to stick on people’s minds longer than when others say nice things. And IF I didn’t like the place be assured I would not come anymore.

Thank you Joe Rice and Canaan Grall for making the best thing I’ve ever seen. It’s gonna be my new desktop.
