A Month of Cover Theme Games #11

Every day this month, I’ll give you a new cover theme game! If you don’t know the game by now, it works like this: I’ll show you three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, a locale, a creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” “They are all Avengers (who ISN’T?)!” “They’re all dead (who HASN’T been killed off?)!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

If you come up with an answer that works outside of what I intended, I’ll give you credit (well, provided I think it fits, of course).

One more thing – if there are floating heads on the cover, ignore them! They don’t mean anything!

If you think you know the answer, e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com (make sure to write which number game you’re answering). Don’t answer in the comments. This way, people who check in at different times of the day can still get credit for answering it correctly! After two days, I’ll post the people who answered today’s game correctly! Here is the list of all the games, along with the answers to each one (after two days go by, of course).

Good luck and enjoy!

This one might be the easiest one yet! By the way, yesterday’s game is not that hard, people! You can definitely get it!

I didn’t read New Warriors as the 90s progressed…in fact the 90s drove me out of comics altogether for a few years so I was totally unaware that…Speedball at one point had a trenchcoat?!?!!?

Well, this is the first one I even was will to take a shot at. I’m pretty sure my guess was one of those that pretty much relates to every comic character at this point and is not what Brian had in mind. We’ll see in 2 days I guess.

Oops, sorry for the double post.

I think everyone in the 90s had a trenchcoat. It was some sort of law.

Well, I just double-checked with Wikipedia, and my guess was right. Don’t know if it was what Brian was going for, though.

Even Animal Man looks very nineties in that outfit. And didn’t he originate that whole “jacket-over-spandex” craze?

Well I was way off on that one!

…If you are American. Just sayin’…

A few of these have been pretty impossible for non-Americans. That said the rest have needed more knowledge than I’ve got too.

It didn’t help that for the longest time I thought it was Stingray on that New Warriors cover.

Who’s that guy standing to Namorita’s right (next to–is that Firestar?)? Is that not Marvel Boy/Justice/Vance Astrovik? If it’s not, then Brian graded my guess (which included the Astros) very generously. If it’s him, then isn’t that even another team from NL Central represented?

Yeah, that’s Vance Astro. I also thought A-Man should count, although not for the NL.

I thought that was Night Thrasher on the New Warriors cover, so I guessed that each cover featured a characer in a prone position who was later killed off (Prof, Psycho Pirate, and the aforementioned Thrasher of Nights). My bad.

Actually I think Prof was already killed off shortly before that Challs cover, and the people lying on the ground are Ace and Rocky.
