The Line It Is Drawn #23 – Comic Book Character/Animal Mash-Ups!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi and Michelle Smith!

The blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account. As an incentive to follow us, if we reach 2,000 followers, I’ll do an extra edition of Comic Book Legends Revealed the week we hit 2,000. At 3,000 followers, I will do another Month of Greatest Stories Ever Told!

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week.

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (all suggestions due by 11:59 PM Eastern on Friday, January 14th).

Let’s all go to the movies! Team-up or mash-up comic book characters with a film from the last five years (2006-2010). Reed, Sue and Ben in the Hangover? Marvel Divas in Sex and the City the Movie? Stuff like that.

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge:

Come up with a comic book character and an animal, then our artists will draw a piece featuring that animal as that comic book character (to wit, a cat as Batman, a dog as Spider-Man, etc. etc. etc.)

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

All copyright and trademarks of the following characters are held by their respective owners!

Caanan Grall is not with us this week, but Brad Millette has returned! So Nick Perks will fill in for Caanan! Keep your eyes out for Michael Magtanong’s piece! It’ll appear soon!

B_Granderson suggested:

Juggernaut as a rhino and professor x as a turtle

Rafael Desquitado is the artist for this one. Here is his website.

doctor strange as an owl

Chaz Folgar is the artist for this one. Here is his website.

He interpreted the scene as, “It’s Dr. Strange Owl vs. the Dread Dormammouse within the belly of Caternity.
There’s a cameo by Galacta-squid, too!”

Thanks to our artists and the suggestion-givers! Great job by everyone!

NOTE: If you wish to participate in the January Reader Art Gallery, I think I’ll push it back a few days this time around, because I’m sure the holidays have delayed people a bit. So if you wish to participate, please send in your artwork (based on any of the previous The Line It Is Drawn topics, although I’d prefer you choose ones from December) to me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com by 6pm Eastern time on Monday, January 17th!

Sooooo cute

OMg! Everyone outdid themselves this week! I can’t stop cheesing.

Quality, detail, composition, humor… it’s all here! Congrats, fellas!

Peace.

Wow! the Captain AmeriDog is really excellent, love the old propaganda poster look of it! Great job!

And that Bunnypool is just awesome.

Consistently one of my favorite moments of the week. Great job everyone.

I missed this week :(

Amazing job everyone, that old WWII propaganda poster with the dog Cap and Bucky is just amazing and the Deadpool bunny made me laugh (and have a Monty Python flashback) and I really dug the insanity of the Doctor Strange owl.

But, if he’s an owl, wouldn’t he be “Doctor WHO!”??

wah-wah-wahhhhh

Sorry.

Very nice stuff this week, though. Marvel and DC are probably appropriating them as we speak…

Bunnypool should get his own series (come on Marvel, would one more really make a difference?)

Sorry I missed this week guys! All the art and ideas for this week are awesome! Daniel, one again, is my favourite with that propaganda poster – the style and execution is dead on, but they’re all just brilliant. Way to turn some wacky ideas into great ones!

wait… No caanan? thats BLASPHEMY! I was actually really excited to see what he’d come up with.

From the top, Raf brought us exactly what what asked with each animal being that specific character with just some REALLY subtle traits. I love the wells on the turtle. more turtles should have wheels, they might move better if they did.

I love how elaborate the strange owl piece is! it has just a little bit of everything in it with even a squid galactus in the back! I had no idea how appropriate Dr. Strange as an owl would be until i saw this drawing.

As usual, Nick keeps it real with his Lobster Hellboy, with a bonus Lobster Lobster-Johnson. and the dialogue is actually really funny. funny thing, i spend more time looking at the castles in the background, cuz of how simple and pretty they are.

Brad is back! and instantly kicking ass with his Modok butterfly. wow. that is just the most ugly thing ever. Just servs as a reminder that we’d probably not like butterflies as much if their face/wing ratio was reversed like we see here.

oh, and George’s Deadpool bunny is strutting like that “Haters gonna Hate” animation that does the rounds in different websites. I can just imagine it now.

Great week for everyone, and thanks to those that liked the Dog-Cap piece!

Great stuff, everybody. Glad to be back.

Points off the Captain America poster for using stock illustrator stars and not American Flag stars. For Shame.

As a result, it’s only fantastic instead of incredible.

I really enjoyed all of them this week.

One nitpick…Lobster Hellboy seems to have a LEFT claw of doom…oh well. Still good stuff.

Wow. Just wow.

All of the submissions were excellent this week.

I gotta admit, the idea this week seemed like the weakest one so far, but then it ended up with what might be the best batch of drawings yet. Every one of these is amazing. I don’t think I can pick a favorite.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Man, seriously, this is probably the best batch we’ve done guys. Daniel, this week, the best of the best.

Art “danger” Adams had done some cool/funny renderings of the Uncanny X-Men in UXM Annual 12.

Dazzler was a pig. It was pretty funny at the time because Dazzler had a story and a personality back then.

bah! it was a great week, and thank to the people that have enjoyed to drawing.

Raf: You only say that ’cause Caanan couldn’t finish a submission this week. ; )

Anya would be afraid of that bunny, that’s who.

The Deadpool Bunny is cute and sad and disturbing all at the same time.

@Mary Warner- haha thanks I was going for all 3 of those

Everyone really did a great job this week. Hellboy Lobster probably came out as my favorite haha I really did laugh at loud when I read it.

Daniel, Just wondering- where do you get your textures from?

I know every week we say this is the best one yet, but this time, THIS IS THE BEST BATCH YET!

I seriously want an art book of these, a 100 page thing for charity/plus a little for our creators. Is it legal to publish a book like this? I mean would Disney and Star Wars and everyone else have a conniption?

disappointed no Batman and Robin. For shame Mr. Cronin. I know there were suggestions. hehe.

Maybe a bonus edition? pretty please?

There actually IS a bonus edition coming, but it’s not Batman and Robin.

The best this week is Irizarri’s piece for not depending just on the heroes-as-animals joke but throwing in a great War Poster reference. Plus excellent art.

My second favorite was Folgar’s for capturing the crazyness of early Dr. Strange.

@ George:

I use of the “artist surfaces” textures available in the default photoshop as base. then i add all the age and creasing myself. The color and cromplering are me just going at it for a while to get a more real paper effect, but the actual texture is available in PS. hope that helps?

I can’t believe it, but this is the best overall week ever on this feature, and without Canaan! There’s always a lot of praise for these, but seriously, every one of these is gold.

Amazing week!! Dr Strange Owl is crazy, Captain Ameridog is fantastic and Bunnypool is disturbing, love all of them :D

Peace

Beautiful entry from Daniel Irizarri. Love it.

Loved this week, (actually love this entire series, always disappointed when I get to the last picture and have no more) That Modok Butterly is terrifying, (that is a compliment)

I was hoping for a cliched Captain America (Bald Eagle).

I honestly think they could make a good one shot with the Deadpool and an ongoing with the “DR Hoo”

@Another Ian – What can I say?? If you look at my website I am a huge Hellboy fan from the very beginning so what was I thinking putting the Hand of Doom on his left claw? Total brain failure – the only explanation.
And kudos to Brad who actually made MODOK more repulsive. Creepy!

amazing week- definitely my favorite so far. the captain america dog (and bucky) is just perfect.

@canaan: my first thought after seeing the end of the gallery was “damn, no canaan grail??” glad to see you just missed a week. don’t let it happen again. the whole gang is obviously talented, and i’ve got my favorites, but you’re head and shoulders above the rest. but you probably already know that.

@NickP – Clearly HellLob is from a mirror universe.

I prefer Deadpool Bunny to the real thing…

I wanna see Dog-Cap throw, and then fetch, his own shield.

Ha! My Dr. Strange Owl drawing’s pulled a disappearing act! That’s nuts!

Great week from everybody. Brad, man, that MODOK butterfly has got to be AIM’s most badass creation ever! I really dig the detail on it. And Daniel, man, the whole war propaganda poster feel seals the deal on what was already a fantastic drawing. Great job, guys!

Seriously, great batch this week.

And I know he’s drawn to resemble a squid, but I can’t bear the idea of his name not being “Galactopuss”.

This is the first time where I can say that there isn’t one I can commend over the other. They are ALL magnificent. How these guys don’t have jobs in the industry is a scientific mystery.

deadpool rabbit is a trip

What great batch this week. All very funny and well done though I think my favorite is Professor X as a turtle. Those little back wheels cracked me up.

Where mic? :p

WOW that Captain Ameri-dog is REALLY impressive in every way design, composition, execution, that’s one of the best ever in this column.
