I Saw It Advertised One Day #27

We continue a MONTH of I Saw It Advertised One Day! Each day this January you’ll get a piece looking at advertisements in comic books over the decades that amused me for whatever reason. In each installment, we’ll take a look at three ads!

Here is an archive of all installments of this feature.

I love how X-Ray Spex ads had to change over the years to make them less deceiving.

Here’s one from 1966…

Now here’s one from 1967…

Hilarious, right?

What strikes me the most about this 1960 PSA about the US’ brand-new state, Hawaii, is that Daniel Inouye, then Hawaii’s Representative in the House, was elected to the Senate two years later…

And is STILL in the Senate!

It sure is good to know that Color Kings make your bike feel like a brand-new 1956 sports car! When I think about sports cars, the first thing that comes to my mind is green tires!

Sounds right to me!!

That’s all for this installment! If you can think of some goofy comic book ads you’d like to see me feature here, drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Do not make suggestions in the comment section, so that they can still be a surprise for future readers! In fact, I think I’ll just delete comments that contain future suggestions.

Wow, I had no idea Inouye was still in the Senate – I think he’ll only need 2 or 3 more years to break Byrd’s record as longest sitting senator.

Anyone actually get any X-Ray specs? they were before my time.

Yeah, I got some from a cereal box one time, but never from a comicbook.

I find it very strange that they felt they needed to “sell” Hawaii. Especially via comicbook ads…

xrays specs are still shown in ad though hard to believe any one would buy into those things and even buy them. the bike one think way before my time.

June 29th, 2014 Inouye breaks the record for longest serving Senator in US History, but he isn’t the longest serving Congressman in office now as that distinction belongs to John Dingell of Michigan who has a three and a half year lead on Inouye.

To get this on to comics the next longest serving behind him in the Senate is longtime Batman fanatic, Patrick Leahy of Vermont

I hope the X-Ray Specks ad from 1956 says “You Can TOTALLY see boobs!”

I still want to get some X-Ray Specs, just to see exactly what they “seem” to show. Obviously, they aren’t really X-Ray Vision providing devices, but I’ve never quite wrapped my head around what they ACTUALLY do.

Oh, and notice that not only did they have to add that “illusory” to the description… they changed the company name, too!

Just like Marvel, as a little stuffed bull learned through some intrepid investigation:

Is that Shadow Lass in the last panel of the Hawaii ad? Or possibly one of the compassion Lanterns instead?

I actually got to use X-Ray specs. They were cardboard glasses with bird feathers for the lenses. When you looked at someone it did sorta look like you were seeing their skeleton. I knew this had to show up here.
