The Line It Is Drawn #27 – Valentine’s Day Edition!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi and Michelle Smith!

The blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account. As an incentive to follow us, if we reach 3,000 followers, I’ll either do another extra edition of Comic Book Legends Revealed the week we hit 3,000 or I will do another Month of Greatest Stories Ever Told (your choice)!

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week.

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 9:00 PM Pacific, Thursday, February 10th).

Next week’s theme is…

In honor of the Grammy Awards this Sunday, mash-up a comic book character and a famous music album cover (Fantastic Four walking down Abbey Road, stuff like that)! Bonus points for suggestions involving Bob Dylan album covers!*

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge (which we had over 100 suggestions for!!):

In honor of Valentine’s Day, come up with a mash-up of comic book characters and characters from famous romances, whether it be novels, films, TV shows, theater or even other comic books!

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

All copyright and trademarks of the following characters are held by their respective owners!

No Daniel or George this week, but Nick threw in a bonus drawing and we welcome our new fill-in artist, Sean McFarland!

b_granderson (who had hard luck this week, as he had suggestions picked by both George AND Daniel this week, so he went from 4 suggestions used to just 2) suggested:

joker and harley quinn as bonnie and clyde

Chaz Folgar is the artist for this one. Here is his website.

Both b_granderson AND dhacker615 suggested:

Batman and Catwoman in the poster for “Pretty Woman”.

Michael Magtanong is the artist for this one. Here is his website.

BigMike20X6 suggested:

Batman & Catwoman on a bicycle, ala Butch Cassidy

Our newest artist, Sean McFarland, is the artist for this one. Here is his website.

Edwardthe_III suggested:

Batman and Catwoman in Casablanca, maybe with Slam Bradley as her other love interest.

Nick Perks is the artist for this one. Here is his website. Nick had two different takes on this one. One was just to dress Bogie up as Batman…

And another was to have the Batman cast of characters take the place of the cast of Casablanca (including, quite humorously, the Joker being played by Conradt Veidt, who portrayed The Man Who Laughs, which might very well be the visual basis for the Joker)…

nicolhay suggested:

How about Madrox and Siryn in the deli scene from When Harry Met Sally?

Caanan Grall is the artist for this one. Here is his website

shurwitt suggested:

Starro jilts Star Sapphire, old-fashioned romance comics style.

Nick Perks did a bonus drawing of this one, as well. Again, here is Nick’s website.

Thanks so much to all of the suggestion-givers and, of course, our awesome artists! A big welcome to Sean!

Happy early Valentine’s Day!

Now go make suggestions for next week’s theme!!

NOTE: If you wish to participate in February’s Reader Gallery, be sure to drop me an e-mail with a JPEG of your drawing (you can submit up to two drawings per month) by 3pm Pacific time this Thursday, February 10th! Use any topic that has been featured on The Line It It Drawn (I’d prefer you use stuff from January’s editions, but I won’t hold you to that)! Not a lot of folks have contributed this month. I might just drop the feature if it continues to get a paltry turnout (as it is mostly designed for folks to share their art – if they don’t feel like doing so, that’s fair enough).

*Bonus points don’t count for anything. I just figured it sounded good to say “bonus points!”

That second, full on Casablanca poster is amazing. I’d buy and hang a full size poster of that in my home.

Big props to nicolhay and shurwitt. Those were truly briljant idea’s.

The Madrox/Siryn one was my favorite.

That Starro / Star Sapphire one cracked me up.

However, Caanan Grall’s work is consistently the most appealing to me, week after week. The Siryn / Madrox scene was very amusing as well.

All are well drawn, but I can’t really get excited about the Batman ones because, well, I’ve never really liked any of his romantic relationships. Just what does he see in Catwoman (besides her body?) You’d think if there was a hero who thinks with his head and not his loins, it would be Batman. (The rest of his relationships are just as bad: Talia, Silver St. Cloud, Jezebel Jet- sheesh! Well there’s Vicky Vale but she has so little personality as to be rarely used.)

That said, I give my vote of Best Drawn to Perk’s second Casablanca poster.

Once again I can’t vote for Canaan’s for favorite not for the art (which is good as usual) but because I don’t like the X-Factor characters and that scene from When Harry Met Sally, even less.

I’m of two minds on the Starro one. On the one hand, falling in love with a starfish brings memories of tentacle manga (ugh!) but on the other, it is a VERY clever tribute to the Romance and Science Fiction comics era. Nice work! :)

The Starro / Star Sapphire cover is priceless – I’d put that on my wall in a heartbeat.

Nick Perks is amazing. I kinda wish he had kept the more Bogeyish Batman from the first poster in the fully Batmanized one. Nice work all around as usual.

Heh, /I/ Suggested Joker & Harley as Bonnie and Clyde too… and a good 2 days before B_G. Credit where its due. :p

Love the pieces this week.

Conrad Veidt is Joker and all is as it should be (Greenstreet would have made an interesting Penguin too).

Gotta say, Nick really knocked his out of the park again. Brilliantly done.

Madrox and Siryn had be cracking up! Loved all of these.

Ha! I love the starfish’d minister.

Man, a lot of people like Batman and Catwoman.

The “Pretty Woman” homage was pretty good, though.

The only couple I could think of last week was Batman & Catwoman. This week I think of 3 to use as suggestions for the album cover theme. Go figure.

Great suggestions and artwork as always.

I love Conraid Veidt as The Man Who Laughs / Joker in Casablanca. Siryn’s super orgasm is a typically brilliant Canaan touch. And the Starro cover is so perfect from idea to execution, I almost can’t believe it exists.

Michael Magtanong did an amazing job on the “Pretty Woman” poster. It is clever and sexy.

I love the Batman on Nick Perks second Casablanca poster. Bogie as Batman was funny as well.

With the casting as shown in the second Casablanca poster, it means Batman and Commissioner Gordon would have the dialogue that includes, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

I think that works.

Ohmygosh, these are awesome. I’m thrilled with how my silly Starro suggestion turned out, especially to see that Nick got one of the face-hugging starfish on there. At first I couldn’t decide who I wanted Starro to be paired with, because any romantic match for him seemed pretty arbitrary and out of nowhere, but I’m glad Star Sapphire popped into my head, because the whole piece has this great Silver Age feel about it.

And I love love love that Casablanca piece. Who knew Bergman would make such a great Catwoman? And Rains as Gordon just makes me giggle.

Hillarious! Great ones this week!

Anal bum cover, eh Trebek? I suggest the original White Tiger in a snowstorm, in tribute to the White Album.

OH AWESOME!!!! So glad the Casablanca suggestion was made!!! It turned out better than I dreamed with all the awesome additions!!! Really awesome to see!!

All the works this week were great, but man, I cannot get over that Starro/Star Sapphire work! I LOVE Starro and wish I had thought of that!!! It’s hilarious!!! I really dig using the Catwoman title down the side on the Pretty Woman piece, really gives it the vibe for both pieces, and a great touch! Everyone did a great job this week!

i love the starro/star sapphire one! i can only hope that larfleeze (or glomulus!) gets a valentine’s day special issue. that would be epic.

No Superman/Lois, Reed/Sue or Spidey/MJ sketches? That’s a bit surprising…

The Butch Cassidy mash-up missed the mark, IMHO. If the Batcycle had been made to look old-timey (with ridiculously large front wheel and such) and if Catwoman was sitting on the handlebars/basket, then we’d be cooking with gas.

But good work all around — this is a great recurring feature!

How about every Avenger ever in a Sgt Pepper’s tribute? Let’s see you draw that in a week, guys.

How about every Avenger ever in a Sgt Pepper’s tribute? Let’s see you draw that in a week, guys.

Or if you run out of time, just Venom.

Just a random suggestion. Dr. Strange & Jimi Hendrix’s Axis: Bold a Love.

Great job this week.

Beautiful Batman/Catwoman.

The most interesting DC couple actually when compared to the likes of the boring safe cliched ones.

I think Selina is the only woman who really really has made Batman grown and challenges him and what’s great is she doesn’t sit around mooning for him if he acts like a jerk.

Unlike some other of his love interests who I can name..Talia( she’s a psycho…Wonder Woman…how sad a grown Amazon has to chase him for a date as if her life depended on it , Vicky…boring and I could go on and on)

I also think Catwoman is the only woman as far as Batman is concerned. Well, maybe Talia in second?

I disagree with Sijo. It makes sense that Batman, a man that supresses a lot of his own human needs, would have an attraction for nasty, bad girls.

Opposites and all.

It also makes sense that none of those relationships can work in the long run.

Regarding the Album Cover suggestions, I’d like to mention the Chicago cover with Earth exploding and the city of Chicago escaping into space inside a guitar-shaped starship (that’s one image that has stuck in my mind since childhood.) Maybe combined with Superman- eg. Argo city escaping Krypton?

The Starro romance cover is just awesome.

Iwould buy and frame it, my wife would kill me though, if I try to hang it on our wall :)

Good grief, these were funny!!! Loved the one with Madrox and Siren! I can only imagine what happens afterwards:

Old lady to the waiter: I’ll have what she’s having.
Waiter (hand to his ear): What?
Old lady: I said I’ll have what she’s having!
Waiter: WHAT??
Old lady: I swear I had my hearing aid on-I’LL HAVE WHAT SHE’S HAVING!!

Nice stuff.

Sijo, I think the exploding city you’re talking about is the band Boston, not Chicago. God help me that I know that.

As for album cover suggestions (and I was inspired by Cliff Chiang’s work):

-Deadpool on Nirvana’s Nevermind
-Impossible Man on the soundtrack to UHF
-Dazzler on the cover to the American Grafitti Soundtrack
-The Batmobile on ZZ Top’s Eliminator
-Booster Gold on Vanilla Ice’s To the Extreme
-The Doom Patrol on Starship’s Knee Deep in the Hoopla
-Iron and Lead from the Metal Men on Styx’s Kilroy Was Here
-Anole and Rockslide on The Proclaimers’ Sunshine on Leith
-Hulkling and Wiccan on Wham’s Make It Big
-Black Lightning on MC Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hammer ‘Em
-The Legion of Super-Heroes on the Beatles’ Revolver
-Cable on Kenny Rogers’ The Gambler
-The Young Allies (new team) on Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow
-The JSA All-Stars on Huey Lewis and The News’ Sports
-And finally, the X-Men on Blondie’s Parallel Lines

another week in which i blow it.i was even on like, a 4 or 5 week streak! bah! such great entries, regardless!

chaz kept it awesome with the small redesigns to the characters, Michael made it fun as hell with the little things, like the bat-cuffs. i dunno if those are DC standard, but if they are not, they should be! Nick perks is just stepping above and beyond with ALL of his entries. seriously he’s not had a bad week yet, and I frankly love Caanan’s siryn! I think people a block away would have that same awkward face your drew on all of them.

welcomes go to Sean, with a simple fun piece!

Here’s to more entries this week. I PROMISE i’ll do one. : )

Acer, if you want to play the game, go to Twitter with your ideas.

Hey, you guys used my suggestion! Great work by Mr Grail, making my silly idea a reality.

Thanks everyone!

Oh, and I love the Starro entry for concept, and the Pretty Woman one for execution. Great stuff ladies and gentlemen!

Sweet! Thanks to b_granderson and dhacker615 for the Pretty Woman suggestion! I was shocked at the realization of just how much I’m unfamiliar with the romance genre in pop culture, so it was a relief to see and to get a chance to work on something familiar. hahah

CHAZ, man, I was gunning for Bonnie & Clyde, but I’m glad you got it! That is my favorite piece from you, thus far! The colors are awesome!

NICK PERKS, you are a beast. That’s it.

CAANAN does THE BEST facial expressions.

BIG welcome to SEAN! Excellent addition to the team!

DANIEL :: Where you at, maaan?? We can’t have you turn the Daniel-Mode off! Hope to see you and GEORGE come through next week! Btw, the bat-cuffs look to be standard issue according to DC DIRECT’s JLA TROPHY ROOM. heheh Thanks for noticing!

Thanks for the love, everyone! I wish you all, singles and couples, a Happy Valentine’s.

Peace.

All great stuff. Unfortunate to see Batman/Catwoman dominating this week. Can’t we spread things out more? Mr. Fantastic/Invisible Woman, Superman/Lois Lane-Lana Lang-Wonder Woman, Spider-Man/Mary Jane-Gwen Stacy-Black Cat, Vision/Scarlet Witch. The list of unused couples goes on and on while we get 4 spins on Batman/Catwoman + Joker/Harley, another entry from the Batman corner.

Loved the Starro/Sapphire piece, especially the dialogue.

I don’t know if Wade Mast (2nd Casablanca poster) is a real person, but it is an anagram for Adam West.

Hey all, thanks for the well wishes, from those who gave them, and the criticism as well. I definitely could have pushed that piece more, a little regrettable I didn’t. I’ll get em next time I promise. I realize that this week was a little Bat and Cat ‘centric, but the best way to avoid that is make all of your excellent suggestions prior to the drawings being posted. Just follow CSBG on the twitter the kids are always talkin’ about. If you are ideologically opposed to posting anything on Twitter, I understand, but the world will be poorer without your 2 cents.
Chaz: Your compositions are so solid it’s a little ridiculous. I would be amazed to hear you don’t work in fine art.
Mic?: Flawless execution of the suggestion. Richard Gere would be a terrible Batman though. I mean who puts gerbils in a utility belt?
Nick: I would buy that issue of Strange Romance. Buy it and love it.
Canaan: You routinely bring the funny. You’re like the USPS of lolz.

As far as the complaints about the Bat/Cat theme, I’m sure that there were other combos as well… I for one suggested a Spidey/MJ, Superman/Lois and Thor/Jane Foster.
Frankly, the fact that I have the opportunity each week to get some fine art done based on my ideas done is the best thing about the whole blog.

Really great week for everybody and a really nice debut for Sean! Great to have you on board, man! I can’t wait to see more of your drawings! By the way, that Batcycle rules and I can’t stop staring at Catwoman — she really pulls you into the drawing! Love the expression on her face. Nice work!

@Daniel and George: I know you guys’ll knock us out next week!

@mic?: You know, the funny thing is, is that “Batman and Catwoman on the poster for Pretty Woman” was one of the choices I was eyeballing!!! Your drawing came out awesome, dude! Great job!
