Comics Should Be Good’s 3rd Annual March Madness!!
Welcome to the 2011 DC/Marvel Comic Character Tournament!
As the NCAA basketball tournament goes along, so will a series of polls matching various comic book characters against each other. The first two years, I had you judge the polls based on which characters you liked the best. This year, we’re mixing it up. Instead, you’ll be voting on who you think would win in a fight.
The characters I am using are 64 characters currently starring in superhero books for DC and Marvel. In the case of Marvel, they have less solo books so I’ve worked in members of the more prominent superhero teams (so Cyclops, Emma Frost and Magneto are listed, for instance, as are Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman and the Thing). Similarly, for DC, I’ve included all three of the Gotham City Sirens and the main leads of Brightest Day (Aquaman, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter and Firestorm). You might differ with some of the rankings or the brackets (a particularly tricky one is differentiating between the low end of “Heavy Hitter” and the high end of “Street Level”). Let’s just take for granted that you will differ and save the time of saying, “A #6 seed? Character X should be a #4 seed!” or whatever, and just vote on what the Selection Committee came up with before you (especially since I’m not going to be changing anything).
Here are the four regions!!

Here is the tournament bracket – click on it to get the full bracket and feel free to print it out if you’d like (I dunno if it fits on one page or not).
Each competitor has, let’s say, a half hour to prepare (so it’s not like the Hulk just walking up to Lex Luthor and smacking him – Luthor would be prepared), and can use whatever weaponry you figure would be typical for that character (so Punisher can use whatever guns you would expect him to normally use, but he can’t go get, I dunno, the Infinity Gauntlet, or whatever). These are not “to the death” fights, by the way.
Here’s the links to the first rounds of the four regions…
DC Street Level Region, Round 1
Marvel Street Level Region, Round 1
DC Heavy Hitters Region, Round 1
Marvel Heavy Hitters Region, Round 1
Now go get voting!

You have a link to last year’s matchup at the bottom there.
But otherwise, let the games begin! WHOO!

I believe Lobo was the character who got Shazam’s spot (Shazam was the last DC character to get cut).

Oops! Thanks, Glitchy, I’ll fix it.

Depending on the writer, the winner is Batman.

So like the last 2 years, we are all effectively killing time till the Batman vs Spiderman finals. (Let’s face it, these 2 will be there at the end)

I’d recommend taking another look at the bracket before making that judgment.

Slightly off-topic, but the tournament thing gave me an idea: a college mascot/comic character mash-up might make for a good The Line It is Drawn theme…

@Brian: Well, mea culpa. I guess a Batman-Spidey semi isnt too bad.

The fact that these fights are “not to the death” changed my voting in several of these match-ups. The willingness or even eagerness to kill is a big advantage for some of these characters.
The Punisher trying to subdue Spidey? Spidey wins. In a death match, I’d put my money on the Marine.

I actually don’t think there’s any sort of measurement that wouldn’t result in Batman winning.
He could probably even win the crappest DC/Marvel superhero title if he had enough prep time…

There is always a 5-12 upset. And this has been rigged to have another. Supergirl (5) vs Lobo (12)!
Lobo is no 12 seed.

Why is Booster in the DC Street Level region? Is it the time travel, the futuristic costume, or the Legion flight ring that gives him his street cred?

Any chance of a higher res bracket? Printed out at 11 x 17″ and still kind of hard to read.
