Stan Lee’s Back Pages

Every day this month I will share with you the first (at least as far as I know) U.S. professional work by a notable comic book creator. Here is an archive of the creators who have been featured so far.

Today’s featured creator is Stan Lee!

Enjoy!

You all know Stan Lee.

He made his comic book debut with a text story in the third issue of Captain America Comics. Stan was 18 years old.

Here it is…

His first full comic book story came a few months later in All-Winners Comics #1. And he basically never looked back!

I remember reading this! I think they republished it in one of the Avengers Masterworks or Marvel Milestone editions. Neat stuff!

Considering the number of quality comics Stan Lee would eventually write, I’m amazed at how bad this is. My favorite part is where Captain America throws Bucky at the two gunmen.

How cool is it that, with other creators, Brian gave a small synopsis of his/her past work, but in this case all it takes is ” You all know Stan Lee”? He really is The Man.

By the way, this text piece is 70 years old, right? I believe Stan’s 88.

That prose is pretty awful. I don’t think this guy has much of a career ahead of him.

Except that Stan is credited with creating the Black Marvel, who first appeared in Mystic Comics #5, March, 1941, two cover months before this.

Stan did not create the Black Marvel. I actually did a Comic Book Legends Revealed on that a long time ago – the first Black Marvel story was done by a comic packager, and Stan never worked for comic packagers. On top of that, Marvel has been clear over the years that Lee’s first assignment was this text story (even noting as much in their special Best of Stan Lee hardcover collection). The confusion came about because Stan’s first comic assignment was a Black Marvel story. That somehow got mixed up over the years into “Stan created the Black Marvel.” He did not.

Thanks, I knew you’d know. I’ll go correct Wikipedia and CBDB.

Isn’t this text story also the first time Cap uses his shield as a throwing weapon?
