Top 125 Comic Book Artists: #125-121

Here are the first five artists on the countdown, based on your votes for your favorite comic book artists of all-time!

I’ll give you a sample page for each artist.

125 Tony Daniel – 84 points (2 first place votes)

124 Sergio Aragones – 85 points (1 first place vote)

123 Jock – 86 points

122 Geoff Darrow – 87 points (3 first place votes)

This is the only scene that needs some setting up. It’s from Darrow’s brilliant Hard Boiled series (written by Frank Miller). The fellow in the scene is a killer cyborg who is also a mild-mannered head of a nuclear family (or so he thinks). Here, his dreams of the actual past are conflicting with the facade of his happy life. Great storytelling here by Darrow (and one of the few not-so-graphic pages from the first issue)…

121 Terry Moore – 88 points (1 first place vote)

Check back tomorrow for the Top Comic Book Writers from #125-121!

Great theme!

These people were not among my favorites but I’d still place Aragones higher than #124…and Moore and Darrow are cool too (other two I haven’t read).

And looking at the points required even to these positions, I guess some people I voted for won’t show up even in this countdown…

It’s kind of insane that Sergio Aragones, Geoff Darrow and Terry Moore didn’t even rate on the top 100, they’re all BRILLIANT artists. But I didn’t put any of them in my own top 10, so I guess I can’t complain.

I think I put Aragones on my top ten list, but I can’t remember for sure.

And there was someone, hell, more than one person, who put Tony Daniel at the top of their list? What the???

Aragones was #11 for me. I had a hard time leaving him off my list. Surprised he’s so low, but guess I can’t complain since I didn’t include him either.

Never heard of Jock. Looks like he does good work, though.

I like Daniels, Moore, and Aragones, but didn’t think about them while putting my list together.

Darrow was part of my ridiculously massive 11th place tie.

Aragones hadn’t even occurred to me, but then neither did Hembeck. I like them a lot, but it’s more because of their sense of humor than their distinctive artistic styles. I’ve never heard of Jock or Darrow. Moore’s a great choice, although Strangers in Paradise was mostly the book I read to tide me over between Love and Rockets installments.

Crazed Spruce,

If you like what you see here, there was a Vertigo series called The Losers that Jock drew. I only have the first 2 volumes due to finances, so I don’t know if the series kept its quality. What I’ve read was good crime/heist/ensemble fiction, and the art was great. The art from the page Brian put on the site is from Green Arrow: Year One, which got good reviews as well.

The Losers was pretty awesome. Jock didn’t do every single issue, but did most of the 32. The whole series got collected into 2 bigger volumes (was that last year?) when the movie came out. Well worth getting. And he’s the cover artist on (most?) issues of Scalped.

This is a cool list, but yeah, point totals means it’s unlikely a couple people on my list made the top 125, even.

So, um, Brian, any chance we could get just a listing of everyone down below these guys? Or even just something saying there were x number of total artists on the list, and y number of writers?

Man, you give and give and give, and I just want more!

Jock is a favorite of mine. Why the hell haven’t DC collected his 3 Detective – Batwoman issues? Include the zero issue, and its a nice little trade. And hello? Rucka as the writer!

Sadowski better be in this top 125! ;)

And I better not see the top 10 being all late artists! haha…

With the exception of Tony Daniel, the standard here is higher than most of the entries that did make the list!

People haven’t heard of Jock? Kinda surprising.
Anyway, I’m not a fan of his interior work, but his covers are amazing.

Also, it’s sad that Tony Daniel is only one point away from being tied with Aragones.

For people who really like the Geof Darrow art and want to search for more of his great work, remember he spells his first name with only a single ‘f’ as strange as that may be. :)
