The Comic Book Fools of April – Who Fights Ninjas, Drugs, Nepotism and Pre-Algebra?
Every day in April I will be featuring a humorous comic (either an issue or a series of strips) that I found particularly amusing. Feel free to e-mail me at email@example.com the comic stories that are your favorites when it comes to hilarity, and I’ll see if I can’t feature some of them this month, as well!
Today we ask a question that is answered by two word…STREET ANGEL!!
Specifically, let’s take a look at Street Angel #1, by Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca! I love this comic so much that I think I have featured it, like, five times so far on the blog! Here goes number six!!!
In the first issue of this neat-o mini-series by Rugg and Maruca, we meet Jesse Sanchez, the Street Angel. Essentially, she is a homeless orphan living in the world’s worst ghetto who uses her skateboarding skills and martial artistry to kick bad guy behind.
One of the coolest recurring gags from the series (just the actual issues, not the trade) is that before you get to the story in issue #1, there is a drawing of Jesse fighting a giant octopus.
From that point on, every issue has Jesse fighting the octopus again, but in bizarre and offbeat ways.
To wit, from issue #4…
There’s a similarly cool recurring gag where Rugg will draw Jesse on the back cover of the issue in drastically different art styles.
To wit, here’s #1 and #4…
Very funny stuff.
In any event, #1 is an action-packed romp as Jesse must save the Mayor’s daughter from the evil Dr. Pangea and his band of ninjas.
Here is Jesse deciding whether to take the gig….
Rugg has a really inventive style of storytelling – it’s so dynamic and detailed. SO much energy in every page!
The recurring bad guys throughout the series are ninjas (who are basically just henchmen). Here is Jesse dealing with them…
Finally, here’s one of my favorite bits from the entire series. Jesse has burst into the lair of Dr. Pangea and while she killed a bunch of ninjas, it has not worked out perfectly…
I love that page turn bit!!
Man, Street Angel is awesome. Funny, great art. Everything you want in a comic book!
