Vaughan & Chiang's "Paper Girls" Builds a Familiar Yet Disconcerting World
All throughout May, I’ll spotlight a different web comic. Like with the month of independent comics and the month of LGBT comics, I figure I will let you web comic creators out there suggest your comic for spotlight during this month. So if you want me to spotlight your comic, drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org!
Today we look at a twist on the racing comic idea called 99 Reasons to Win, about a prison death race league, written and drawn by Adam Law (co-written by James Law).
The basic concept of the book is that the “Mort-Racing Prison League” pits prisoners against each other in deadly car races. If you survive a certain amount of races, you gain your freedom. No one has even come close before, but right now, Team Crimson, who drive in a car known as Felicity, are making real noise in the Mort-Racing world.
Their star driver and engineer, Chastity “99” Fox, is a whiz behind the wheel, their navigation-bot, T-Gate, helps to keep Chastity in control a bit, and her gunner (this IS a death race, after all), Mounty, supplies the gunpower and the muscle.
The comic is released in the form of flash flip-books. Law has created two of them so far, with issue #3 due out in July. Each book is full-color and over 50 pages long!
Here’s a sample from a race in issue #1…
Later, Chastity is approached by a mysterious fellow…
As it turns out, he represents a powerful corporation that can arrange for Chastity’s release so that she can work for them, as she is such a mechanical whiz with Felicity that they want to put her to use making vehicles for Vortech (plus, they want to take Felicity apart to study her).
As you can see, this offer does not go over too well…
So that’s the set-up – Team Crimson has to keep winning races in their quest to be released from prison while also fending off Vortech. In issue #2, Vortech messes with T-Gate in an attempt to kill Chastity and Mounty.
This is fun book, filled with dynamic artwork by Law (as you can see above). It is an enjoyable read and Chastity, T-Gate and Mounty are fun to root for.
Check out issues #1 and #2 here (#3 will be due out soon!).
