Leaked DC Relaunch Covers Reveal Six Titles, Including Detective Comics #1!

Over at DC Women Kicking Ass, Sue has some covers from upcoming DC Comics #1s. Apparently, from what I gathered from reading CBR’s message boards, some fans figured out that if you changed the name in the web address for previous covers that DC officially released earlier in the week that you could find other covers, as well.

The covers that were found so far are for Batwoman #1, Nightwing #1, Catwoman #1, Swamp Thing #1, Batman #1 (by Greg Capullo!) and, most importantly, Detective Comics #1!

So this appears to be our first confirmation that DC is, indeed, restarting Detective Comics at #1.

I think that was inevitable. It would have been nice to see Action and Detective continue (and hey, maybe Action will) their old numbering, but alas.

Now they just better not SUCK.

And maybe, like someone said on the first DC relaunch posts, they’ll do what Marvel did for a while and “double number” them. Hey, 8 years down the line, if comics are still around, will be a good time to revert the numbering!

Also, there’s a Capullo cover, apparently for Batman #1 floating around.

And it’s intriguing as to who Nightwing might be. It’s probably Jason Todd.

Oh, I thought that the Capullo cover was an official release. Thanks, I’ll add that one in.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure, I saw it at Bleeding Cool, and it doesn’t say for sure there that it’s officially released, so that one might have been a leak too.

It’s pretty cool looking, although as someone pointed out, Riddler with a question mark mohawk?

That Nightwing cover looks great! – and it looks like there is speculation its Jason, which I am all for. Or at least a Jason Todd series by Winick in the relaunch would be nice. ;)

I haven’t brought anything by Capullo before, but I like that Batman cover – and as long as he (or some other artist) isn’t the writer as well, I may check it out. Does anyone know what his output is like? Is he exceptionally slow like every other ‘major’ artist DC have poached?

Curious about who the creative team on Swamp Thing will be…. the others? not so much.

James, I believe that Capullo may be one of the faster artists around. I think he kept Spawn on a (near)monthly schedule for many years, and he was working on Haunt, and that’s been fairly on time, I think.

Bleeding Cool posted some Haunt pencils by him, and I’m not sure if the commenter was being facetious or not, but they claimed he did a 2 page spread in about 8 hours. So, I’d say on that end, DC may have made a good choice.

Plus, he’s a cool guy, I met him up at the Boston Comic Con, and got 101/200 of the special Batman print he did. Sweet Damian on there.

I think there are rumors that Duane Swierzynczi (sp?) (who worked on Cable and Moon Knight? and stuff) is working on a Batman book. Dunno if this is the one.

If Capullo gets a good writer, I’ll definitely pick his Batman up. I’ll at least try it otherwise.

They’re renumbering the longest running American comic book…and it’s by Tony Daniel. If he ends up writing and drawing the book, that’s adding injury to insult.

Thanks for the info Travis ;)

If these covers are leaks, how does anyone know that thats a cover for Detective #1? – Couldn’t it just be the Dectective issue for that month? Or couldn’t it just a different Bat title? Haven’t we seen 3 Batman covers so far? – Wasn’t there a Jock cover just released too? – or was that for the pre relaunch?

If these covers are leaks, how does anyone know that thats a cover for Detective #1? –

The code is dtc_cv1.

oh, ok! ;)

The Jock cover, as I understand, was one for the current Detective run (pre the new #1).

Who knows, maybe it’s all a trick! Dummy covers to get us all hot and bothered!

Nah, why bother?

Ah, don’t pretend like you don’t know theyll go back to their old numbering eventually.

I really hope Snyder’s still writing Detective. Or something Batman-related (I have very little interest in anything DC-but-not-Batman).

Oh sh*t, I really hope Daniel is not writting Detective Comics.

For F’s sake, “DC Comics’ flagship title is relaunched for the first time ever in DETECTIVE COMICS #1 by acclaimed writer/artist Tony Daniel”

The Source just updated with info on BATMAN #1 (Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo) and DETECTIVE COMICS #1 (Tony Daniel). The info on BATMAN #1 mentions that “In the series, Bruce Wayne once again becomes the only character taking on the Batman name.” Coupled with the lack of any BATMAN, INCORPORATED information, this seems to cast doubt on Morrison’s storyline continuing past August’s showdown with Leviathan.

It’s okay guys. Snyder and Capullo are on Batman. No sign of a Batman Inc. though. Also, Damian is still Robin.

Graeme – I agree completely. I wasn’t expecting this cover to be MORE offensive than the Asian stereotype on the cover to the real Detective Comics #1.

I would rather read a book written and drawn by Tony Danza than by Tony Daniel.

Tony Daniel : comic books : : Jay Leno : comedy

Jay Leno isn’t THAT bad.

I don’t understand – Detective Comics is meant to be DC’s flagship title. And on the first ever new number 1 – we get…. drumroll please…… tony daniel? Why couldn’t Snyder have stayed on Detective?

Its sad that DC can’t find enough top teer talent for these relaunches.

Before I wouldn’t touch the Batman title and was loving Detective – now its switching.

If Damian is Robin and Bruce is Batman, lets say Jason is nightwing…where are Dick and TIm?

Where is the proof Damian is Robin?

If Damian is Robin and Bruce is Batman, lets say Jason is nightwing…

Wait, why should we say Jason is Nightwing? I don’t get that? I’m not going to speculate about where Dick is until I have more reason to believe that isn’t him.

I’m thinking that Batman Beyond is toast.

I know different artists draw Batman differently, but the guys on the covers of Batman and Detective don’t look like the same guy.

figured dc would not leave dectective off for batman is one of their big titles and helped put dc on the map. plus batwoman has been hinted at a number one for so long nice to see it finaly solicited. swamp thing figured only a matter of time before he finaly gets another crack at a series. and nice to see catwoman back in her own book.

Judging by what we know so far, I’m gonna argue that if this relaunch proves to be the big success DC wants it to be, then it will finally close the matter of whether fans give a shit about creative teams. With almost a third of the reboot lineups announced, the only big changes we’ve seen have been on titles where big changes were necessary and would have come off without the reboot, namely in Superman and Wonder Woman. Kinda lends credence to a commenter’s theory that the entire reboot idea grew out of the need to repair the damage done by JMS.

Well, with Dick out of the batsuit, that’s three less comics for me to buy.

If Jason’s Nightwing, then I’ve lost all interest in DC. I won’t buy JL for one character (Cyborg) and we don’t know what’s going on yet with Cass, Stephanie, Dick, Barbara et al.

This isn’t even counting Donna and Cassie, or Roy, Mia, Connor, and Liam…

It’s just dawning on me now that Morrison’s not going to get to finish his story.

More covers and info from IGN. It does indeed seem that the Batman teams and status quo are changing very little:

http://comics.ign.com/articles/117/1172822p1.html

Morrison on Superman: awesome.
Morrison off of the Batman story that he’s been taking, like, six years to complete when we’re this close to the end: tragic.

I really don’t care about continuity, just about good stories. Sadly, I think this reboot will get in the way of some good stories.

And it’s unfortunate that DC allowed Dick Grayson to grow and change only to make him a one-dimensional character again.

It could mean that Dick and/or Tim are head of Batman Inc.

@ The Livewire – From the cover to Batgirl 1 that bleeding cool has, Barbara is Batgirl.

They made Batman itneresting for the first time in years and now they are wiping it out…

There is some great looking stuff with the relaunch, but the Batman books are not among them.

Why do people like Nightwing will be Jason Todd? Witht he Batman Inc. thing dead, why wouldn’t it be Dick Grayson?

[...] on the blogging and message board front, images from several new DC #1s have leaked online, and Comics Should Be Good has all the word on several new series including “Catwoman,” “Nightwing” and “Swamp [...]

I think it’s pretty clear that Tim is now Nightwing, hence the change to red.

Again… why? I have seen no evidence at all that it wouldn’t be Dick. (Doesn’t mean it won’t be, but I can’t imagine why people are saying that it is ‘likely’ Jason or Tim. It is LIKELY Dick, but coudl be someone else.)

On the other hand, I am not sure I care. Dick as Nightwing was never very interesting. Jason as ANYONE was never very interesting, and Tim stopped being interesting when he stopped being Robin.

gain… why? I have seen no evidence at all that it wouldn’t be Dick.

I agree, it’s weird how people keep saying it’s “clear” or “obvious” it isn’t Dick?

Just want to add, it very well may NOT be Dick. I just don’t see any reason yet to be so sure it ISN’T him either.

Especially because it seems too big to be Tim and after the fiasco of Bruce Jones’ Nightwing I can’t see them entertaining the idea of a Jason Todd Nightwing again. I mean I talk about how bad DC editorial is, but even I give them more credit than that.

It’s official: Dick Grayson is Nightwing:

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2011/06/06/nightwing-1-dick-grayson-is-back-as-nightwing/

But looking at how this comments thread and other ones around the net turned into a weird game of telephone and started turning speculation into fact, i really see how so many false rumors get started.

Graeme – I agree completely. I wasn’t expecting this cover to be MORE offensive than the Asian stereotype on the cover to the real Detective Comics #1.

That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day.

Oh, DC comics, did you really want to send a signal by cancelling a book you’ve continuously published and numbered since 1935 with *that*? Honestly I tend to agree with Greg Hatcher’s assessment of this whole thing, but things like this try my patience.

I think it’s pretty clear that Van-Zee is Nightwing.

I think it’s pretty clear that Van-Zee is Nightwing.

True.

That Detective 1 cover is atrocious. Did the Tony Daniel Batman issues released in the past few months sell enough to justify keeping Daniel on the book? Why does Didio or whomever have so much faith in him?

Maybe Jason Todd and Tim Drake don’t exist anymore. Damian took over when Dick Grayson “graduated” to Nightwing about a year ago in DC time. Why not, if it’s a real reboot?

Jay Leno isn’t THAT bad.

No, he really is.
Easily the worst of the American ‘late night’ hosts we get here in the wee hours of the morning – Conan, Letterman, Kimmel and Fallon – all are better than Leno.
He’s anti-funny.

There’s a ‘Red Hood and The Outsiders’ book coming, so I assume Jason Todd is still kicking about as Batman.
DC did an animated film about Red Hood not too far back – maybe due to strong interest in the character, or Batmans past adventures – they’re going to keep Dick, Jason and Tim in somewhat similar roles.

I’m fine with that – Batman’s continuity/history is relatively straight forward, and works well for the character.
Even if you restarted from scratch with everyone, I’d have no problem if they decided Batman had started operating as a solo vigilante before people with powers started showing up, so he already has a history. That could help explain Batman having a claim on Gotham, and the other heroes don’t go there, even though if there’s one city everyone should be cleaning up, it’s Gotham.

I don’t think Leno is brilliant or anything but he’s competent…he’s definitely better than Letterman now. Letterman at his peak was brilliant but not anymore. That being said, no one, and I mean NO ONE is worse than Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy Fallon isn’t even fit to shine Leno’s shoes. Jimmy Fallon is revoltingly unfunny and hands down the worst talk show host on the air right now.

Capullo just puts out insane-detailed stuff. I don’t know how McFarlane got him to draw like that. It’s great.

I wish they wouldn’t start ACtion nor Detective over. They could go to 1000 and Marvel will probably never hit that. Look at Marvel’s messed up numberings. ‘.1′. What the hell is that?

As for the Conan versus Leno thing. Man, I wish it were like 1997 again. Conan came out with his best stuff during those last few 90s years. I could tell people at Marvel not to renumber Amazing Spider-man… not that they would listen.
