Drawing Crazy Patterns – Non-Colossus Fastball Specials
In this feature, I spotlight five scenes/moments from within comic book stories that fit under a specific theme (basically, stuff that happens frequently in comics).
Today we look at five instances of the “fastball special” where Wolverine is being thrown by someone other than Colossus.
Enjoy!
As you know, the “fastball special” is a popular move that Colossus and Wolverine have worked on over the years where the super-strong Colossus will throw the relatively small Wolverine in the air to attack an opponent. The idea is that Wolverine, due to his healing powers, can withstand any impact and therefore it takes the fight to the enemy quickly (especially helpful considering neither Colossus nor Wolverine can fly).
The move has been done on occasion with other characters throwing Wolverine. Here are five times it has happened…
Tito Bohusk Jr. is the grandson of Beak, a supporting cast member in Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run. In the storyline set 150 years in the future, Tito is a member of the X-Men along with Wolverine. Here, Tito gets the chance he has always dreamed of – doing the fastball special with Wolverine…

In New Avengers Annual #1, Ms. Marvel and Wolverine pull off the maneuver “Avengers style”…

In She-Hulk #16, She-Hulk and Wolverine pull off their variation of the technique (with hilarious Dan Slott dialogue and awesome Rich Burchett art)…

In Astonishing X-Men #26, Armor takes a crack at it…

Finally, in Marvel’s Free Comic Day 2009 comic book, by Brian Michael Bendis and Jimmy Cheung, Luke Cage does the maneuver…

That was incredibly fun. Especially with the She-Hulk.

Marc Silvestri and Olivier Coipel, respectively. Simone Bianchi is the Armor one.

Didn’t Cage do it with Wolverine in a Fear Itself tie-in somewhere? Sure I saw it in a preview somewhere? Also special shout-out to Peter throwing Kitty in Astonishing X-Men.

I realize you had a more specific theme, but I’m still surprised you didn’t include the fastball special from Runaways (the one involving Victor Mancha and Molly Hayes.)

Man, the people who didn’t like Simone Bianchi’s art on Astonishing X-Men were crazy.

I think Spidey did one with Kitty Pryde once too back in an old Marvel Team-Up. They were fighting Morlocks, threw her through a stalagtite to get the bad guy, yadda, yadda, yadda . . .

I love Bendis, and I know I already read that issue but something about the line; “Fastball Special, Avengers Style” being followed by the villain calling her Spider-Woman “Spider Whore” just makes it seem like an awful book.

Juggernaut fastballed Nocturne in an issue of Chuck Austen’s Exiles that featured his then-current Uncanny X-Men team. He even said something like “I’ve always wanted to try this.”

The best FS to my memory was the issue of Astonishing X-Men that brought Colossus back. Great double-page spread by Cassaday, with Logan traveling so fast he was generating vapor trails. I was glad for Kitty and Peter to find each other, but Logan and Peter and the Fastball Special really brought it home.
And if I recall correctly, one of the last few episodes of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this season had Giant-Man giving Hulk a FS toss. Nice little (silent) shout-out to longtime Marvel fans!

I’ve seen a couple of fastball specials involving people other than Wolverine also. For example in the Cockrum issues Colossus did one with NIghtcrawler.

In an issue full of great of moments, I’ve always liked the reverse fastball special, where Wolverine tosses Colossus at Phoenix, in X-Men 137.

I’m pretty sure Wolvie did some Fastball Specials in Marvel Adventures Avengers as well, where I don’t think Colossus ever showed up.

Right, but these are only with Wolverine. Juggernaut’s never done the fastball special with Wolverine, has he?

I was thinking that Rogue did the Fastball Special with Wolverine after the Mutant Massacre when Colossus was absent for a time. I no longer have those issues, though, so I can’t be certain.

Fantomex did an impromptu Fastball Special in Uncanny X-Force #4 recently. Not the same angle, but the same effect, with bloody, awesome results.

I smile every time I see the Fastball Special. It’s one of those fun comic book visuals that always brightens up even the more dour of books.

Aha! Yeah, Giant-Girl does the Fastball Special with Wolverine in Marvel Adventures Avengers#7. Luke Cage tossed him as a proper Fastball Special in the 2009 Free Comic Day Avengers comic, but Cage also had a very funny variant in MA Avengers #39 where he used Wolverine as a bat against the Abomination rather than a ball.
And then there’s this …

I liked the FS done by Maggott & either Marrow or Cecelia Reyes in X-Men 75. Neither character had seen or heard of the maneuver, then one of them says something along the lines of “I’ve got this crazy idea!”

Brian,
How about a DC fastball special? Look at the Cover to DC Special 29, Neal Adams, JSA origin. I believe the Atom is being thrown by hourman.

I don’t know if it counts, but near the end of X-Men Mutant Empire 3: Salvation, Wolverine does one with Rogue.

In the legendary finale of the “Dark Phoenix Saga”, Wolverine foiled expectations by being the “pitcher”. To hit Dark Phoenix, Logan takes advantage of the moon’s low gravity by throwing Colossus, who armors up to hit Jean!

Yeah, I thought of that one too. If I’m not mistaken, that was the pair of them up against the X-Men..
