Comic Book Easter Eggs – Crosby, Stills, Nash and the X-Men

All throughout July, I will be sharing with you three comic book “easter eggs” a day. An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ‘em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far!

Today, all of the easter eggs are from artist Carlos Pacheco

Reader Bob M. e-mailed me this suggestion about X-Men (Volume 2) #67…

As you can see, Pacheco has drawn in some of the members of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Even more amusingly, they’re looking at the cover art of their greatest hits album…

And yes, as commenter Joe notes, it appears as though the artist of the cover, Joni Mitchell, is the one showing it to them.

Reader Mario Fernandez Navarro wrote in for a few Pacheco easter eggs.

First off, from the second issue of the Bishop limited series, Reginald VelJohnson as the police captain…

Next, during Avengers Forever, Pacheco worked in cameos of characters from some comics he worked on in Spain.

First, from Triada Vértice…

check out Songbird’s Avengers of the future from Avengers Forever #2…

Next, from Iberia Inc….

check out the last page of Avengers Forever #11…

Cool stuff. Thanks, Mario (although e-mail your suggestion next time, please!).

If you can think of an easter egg/in-joke that you would like to see me feature, drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.com! DON’T make suggestions in the comments section, so as to not spoil the surprise for when I end up actually featuring your suggestion.

NOTE: A word about suggestions. I’ve gotten so many (which is great – keep ‘em coming!) that I am going through them in the order that I receive them. So if you wonder why I did not credit you for a suggestion you sent in, it is because someone else sent it in first. No offense intended!

loved the hilierity with bishop setting the cops up with shard . plus always found the cameo by reginald cool. the crosby still and nash looking at their own album is priceless.

Extra easter egg: the artist showing them the album cover art is pretty obviously based on Joni Mitchell, who painted the album cover in real life. :)

It’s not an Easter Egg,m sinc eit was so explicit,, but Ant-Man had ants named Crosby, Stills, and Nash in that famous Avengers issue (#94?) where he goes inside the Vision’s body.

Is it ‘Invincible’ that had a recurring character drawn to look like Reginald Vel Johnson? I want to say the principal at the high school or dean of the college or something like that.

. . . Beast Boy?

@ sean: it was both. Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, attended Reginald VelJohnson High School, whose principal was drawn to resemble RVJ. At Mark’s graduation ceremony, the principal announced that he was resigning to accept a position as dean of the college that Mark would be attending.
