I Love Ya But You’re Strange – What’s With the As, Ls, H and B?

Every day this August I’ll be spotlighting strange but ultimately endearing comic stories, one a day (basically, we’re talking lots and lots of Silver Age comic books). Here is the archive of past installments of this feature.

Today we look at a bizarre story from 1952’s Strange Tales #9 about a man getting involved into a card game where the people are playing for letters. What’s the deal with the letters?!!? Read on to find out!

Marty Elkin did the art for this four-pager and I honestly don’t know who wrote it. Stan Lee, perhaps?

So anyhow, it is about a grifter who weasels his way into what he thinks is a high stakes poker game…

That is an awesome short story, but man, is it a weird one!!!

What I don’t get is – what about the body parts of the other players? Did they just swap each others’ parts?

By the way, while it was a fun story, how half-assed was Elkin’s art in the story at times? It was like he didn’t want to finish drawing some of the faces.

What did they do with the body parts? And yes, the faces are terrible.

Never heard of Elkin before, but this is pretty neat. It’s got a bit of a Ditko look to it, but also maybe Tony Tallarico, who did the Dell Dracula/Frankenstein and some Blue Beetle stuff. It feels nice and paranoid.

wow, this is the first i heard of him too, amazing artwork. i just did an image search of him and came across this issue of Horrific #6. one of the stories is amazing and if u hadn’t done this one would’ve been perfect for this series. it’s called Night Owl and it portrays the deterioration of a couple as the wife becomes addicted to bowling. she starts cutting corners around the household to pay for the bowling league, stops washing clothes and tidying the house. it all mounts up to a morbid climax. the best part is how the faces on the characters are portrayed with the paranoid, sweaty, horrored look that they did so well back then. but the whole damn thing is about a bowling addiction. it all plays out like a Reefer Madness type of warning for the bowling crowd.

i don’t know if it’s ok to post the link cuz it’s from one of those index things that u find sometimes.

I’ll raise you a “P”. Hehehehehe
