The Line It Is Drawn #53 – I Was So Much Older Then, I’m Younger Than That Now

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 8:00 AM Pacific, Friday, August 19th).

Next week’s theme is…

In honor of the “end” of the current DC Universe, come up with mash-ups or scenarios (cover homages, poses, etc.) built around the characters that are “losing” books upon DC’s New 52 relaunch, so we can give a fond farewell to Secret Six, Stephanie as Batgirl, Power Girl, Gotham City Sirens, Xombi, Red Robin (if you think he counts), Robinson’s version of the Justice League, the old members of the Justice Society and anyone else who is “losing” a title in the relaunch!

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

Make a character younger or older.

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

All copyright and trademarks of the following characters are held by their respective owners!

No George this week (and congratulations to Mr. Zapata on his series getting funded on Kickstarter! I’m glad it made it. I look forward to my copy!), so Sean will fill-in!

Thanks to the suggestion-givers and big thanks to our artists! Wow, they really out-did themselves this week! Such great work!

Now go make suggestions for next week!

Damn, that old man Justice league… Just awesome.

Holy cow!!! Nick, that is amazing work! And Mic? You perfected the Tiny Titans style beautifully, and win my “I Want That As A Poster” award for this week.

Venom with blonde hair is just really wrong in all the right ways and Ghost Rider’s Stackhat with ventilation for the flames is so cute, as is Dan’s drooling Galactot! Though I know he’s meant to be sleeping, but the eyes, for some reason, look like they’re staring at me.

What a week!

Wow. I’m going to start making Tiny Titans suggestions for Mic. Spot on likeness.
Great pieces this week

Also, is there a writeup somewhere of what DC is losing? Haven’t been following the hooplah much.

It’s mostly the ones I mentioned. A Secret Six fan asked me to do a Secret Six tribute, so I figured it was worth doing, but expanded!

This is all some great work, but nothing tops Xavier’s mustache.

Wow…these are all great. Galactot is perfect. Glad I made that suggestion. :)

Excellent Degrassi riff with the X-Men! Two of my favorite things mashed into one, what could be better?

I don’t know what I like more, Xavier’s mustache or Venom’s “Eat [Brains]” t-shirt. Very strong work all round.

I love how Nick Perks’ Superman looks like Clint Eastwood. Hilarious.

Old Man Clark…make it happen DC.

‘Galactot’ is awesome %-)

This is the best all-around week in ages, and that’s saying something. Every one of them is fantabulous!

Oh my gaaaaawd, my suggestion got picked!!! I just made it casually, off the top of my head, when I saw the tweet, I didn’t even go out of my way to think something up and suggest it! AND IT’S TINY TITANS! AW YEAH!!! TOO AWESOME!

A Mad Stew… only Batman’s code would be an anagram of Adam West.

That ‘OLD MAN SUPERMAN’ was so cool.

These are all wonderful. Teenage Venom is just the epitome of the 90s rad. Superbly done.

Old man Superman, is so great, it’s humbling. The amount of time and love Nick pours into his work is nothing short of amazing. Well done sir.

I love teenage venom, and I love that the nun found an ear on him somewhere. “Spider Kill,” and “Eat Brains,” could legitimately be band names.

Galactot, in addition to being a fearsome planet eater, poses a threat with a tsunami of drool. What can stop him? I suspect only the ultimate-pacifier.

I know Mic is capable of razor clean lines, and super sharp colors, so this entry shouldn’t have been such a wonderful surprise. But it was. Go figure. Love it.

I used to watch Degrassi with my baby-sitter (who I thought was the coolest). It was great, even though I am sure most of it went over my head. The fusion of x-men was inspired. The big question is; does wolverine feel more at home now? Also, which x-man gets prematurely knocked up?

Great work by all!

Errr, scratch the last “the” above.

A Mad Stew… only Batman’s code would be an anagram of Adam West.

Ooooh, good catch. Another layer of awesome for Nick’s piece.

Heh. If I’d had more time, Jean Grey could have been Spike carrying a baby Cable. ;)

Though, with that hairdo, I see Spike more as Dazzler, (with Shane as Longshot, naturally.) Except, Shane was anything but lucky…

All of them were awesome.

Awesome, awesome work by all the artists! Mic’s Tiny Titans-esque Runaways, Nick’s “Old Man Superman,” and Canaan’s Degrassi piece (though I thought it was a Saved by the Bell tribute… and it took me a while to figure out that the brunette in white was Emma Frost) especially stood out. Great job by all!

(Oh yeah… who’s little Ghost Rider’s parents in the pic?)

For Li’l GR’s parents, I was going for Mephisto and random skull demon babe. To make Meph’ more fatherly, I gave him a button down opposed to a cape….and if you look really hard, a tiny pipe.

Ha! Preggers Jean would be great, and yeah Spike was totally rocking a dazzler ‘do. 80’s hair was practically a mutant power in its own right.

I’m lacking context on some of these to judge them well. I never saw DeGrassi Junior High, nor Runaways (I’m not into teenage angst, as you can guess.) Still the art is, as usual for our contributors, fabulous. And I *have* heard some very good things about Runaways after the fact, so I might look it up some day (especially if Marvel does indeed do a movie based on them as it’s being hinted.)

Now, the phrase “Old Man Logan” almost made me skip Nick’s piece. I had visions of Superman boinking Supergirl (seriously: what the heck is wrong with Millar?) Fortunately, being a Nick Perks piece, I gave it chance, and I’m glad I did, visually its awesome, like a new Kingdom Come. He gets my vote for best drawn this week.

And funniest goes to- Teen Venom! Maybe it’s because I went to Catholic School, but I found it hilarious! (Galactot was a close second though! :) )

Once again thanks to all who made the suggestions or drew them!

Old Man Supes is AWESOME!! Kal-Old is a bad-a$$.

These are all incredibly well done. Bravo!!!

might get the old de grassi vids out tonight…

Classic tv shows with comic casts

Thanks for running with the idea, Brian — I hope the suggestion I left brings a smile to someone’s face… at least as much as the Runababies brought to mine (no Alex, Mic? Oh, well). The Rattle of One — does that come out only when a diaper needs to be changed?

I would SO buy Nick Perks’ “Whatever Happened to the Justice League?”, and Canaan and the Merry Mutants is always welcome. As a fellow Catholic school survivor, Venom being intimidated by a nun is just perfect. And Galactot is almost cute! Ya know, aside from that gumming worlds out of existence thing…talk about teething pain!

Oh, and thanks for the They Might Be Giants shout-out in the title!

Hm? What They Might Be Giants shout-out?

Man… it’s just one of those weeks where I’m strongly reminded that I’m in the company of MONSTERS!

SEAN, Lil’ GR is as magnificent as expected. Turning a hellish-looking character into something as precious as that is a tall order and you nailed it, sir.

I don’t think there’s anything CHAZ has done that failed to make me smile or chuckle. Comedic genius!

lol Poor Greenland. Galactot is sheer brilliance. The expression’s priceless, DANIEL! I think he and Molly Hayes should schedule a play date sometime.

NICK. You’re a frickin’ beast, dude! You simply blew us all away. “A Mad Stew”! Sweet!

Yay, thanks for the award, CAANAN! I love awards! ;D I know you have your own distinct style, so I hope this doesn’t offend… but I saw your piece on my little iPhone first and, in my earlier dazed and confused state from lack of sleep, I was like “YO!! Brian got Skottie Young to contribute!!” Then I read that it was from you and that totally woke me up. Please consider that a really high praise, my friend. You are SO gonna be big.

Ha! Looking forward to your Tiny Titans suggestions, BIG MIKE! Glad you’re feelin’ my piece, STEVE!

Special shouts-out this crazy week to CHRIS MCFEELY & BRIAN CRONIN ’cause my illo would not have been made possible without them!

Thanks for the love, everyone! Nighters!

The title is a lyric from a TMBG tune called “Ball & Chain” — guess serendipity is in play here… “Confidentially, she never called me baby doll…confidentially, we never had a home…….”

Ah, I gotcha. That lyric went, “But I was young and foolish then/I feel old and foolish now,” though, right? The title of this week’s bit IS a song reference, though, just to a song that has the actual lyrics “I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.”

lol Let’s go with your idea for how The Rattle of One manifests, CHRIS D! Or it could happen when a burping session amounts to vomiting. ;D

Glad you dug my piece! I’ll work in Alex and Gert next time! It pained me to exclude them, but I had to hustle.

Thanks for the theme suggestion! Definitely brought a smile to my face.

Yup – It’s a Bob Dylan song – also covered by The Byrds (who as far as I can tell based about two thirds of their career on covering Bob Dylan songs).

Galactot takes the prize for me this week. That’s glorious!

These are all great, but or some reason I really get a kick out of Galactot.

so any chance we get to see Galactot with his teething ring — Saturn?

Please, please, please kill the comic sans. Besides that great collection!
