The Line It Is Drawn #54 – Goodbye to the Old DCU

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 8:00 AM Pacific, Friday, August 26th).

Next week’s theme is…

Our first topic repeat! This is one that we got such a great turnout for that I decided to make it a semi-regular topic for this feature (by “semi-regular, I mean once every six months or so). So next week’s topic is COVER HOMAGES! Pick a comic book character and place him/her/them into an homage of a famous comic book cover! Deadpool re-creating Wolverine #1 with a Swiss Army Knife, stuff like that.

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

In honor of the “end” of the current DC Universe, come up with mash-ups or scenarios (cover homages, poses, etc.) built around the characters that are “losing” books upon DC’s New 52 relaunch

Enjoy!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

All copyright and trademarks of the following characters are held by their respective owners!

Daniel Irizarri’s Red Robin cover homage is sick! They’re all very cool this week, well done guys!

I have no one to blame but myself for not participating this week (or last week), but I’m surprised by the lack of Secret Six.

*Sniff* Now I know what I want to be my first Youtube submission–a slideshow showing the covers of each of DC’s final issues of 2011 set to the tune of “Good Riddance” by Green Day, a la the episode “The Clip Show” from Seinfeld. Anyone like that idea?

I want George Zapata’s picture on my wall. Forever.

Chaz, my man, you never fail to deliver on your toon work. Love love love it.

The Nick Perks one, awww.

I love the George Zappata one to.

he’s not as well known or iconic as any jla member, which is why the costume will probably never surface again, but the classic red robin look is one of the best. i hate to see it go. especially after just recently being introduced and utilized in the dcu proper. why?

Those are all great. Much love to the Tim and Steph one though. I would love to see one for Wally though. :(

Nice wedgie, but not quite atomic.

The JSA Iwo Jima cartoon is extremely touching. Well done!

The Milestone Media and the JSA pictures are the best.

That JSA one is awesome. I’d read a book with just those 3 guys, either present-day or a “Tales of” that spans their careers.

Long live? Not in those horrid costumes.

The JSA Iwo Jima pic and the pick of Tim and Steph killed me… I agree with maphillips, we need one for Wally. Maybe one for Cass too. I don’t think she will be back the DCnU.

I love the Superman and Doomsday! Superman’s face is hilarious and the rationale for the underwear change is great!

Excellent work on all. I say DCU proper FOREVER ’cause this too, shall pass.

Hi… Im not a DC fan, because… well, Im not trying to sound like ‘rude’ and all but:

***DC is the Cold War mentality kids trying to ‘hang-out’ with the 21st Century cool kids >>> Aaaakwaaaaaard :-(

I think with 52, and WWIII and all the other b.s. ,,, its like trying to keep up with the X-men comics: Its not worth it when its all sooo convoluted (although really, this is actually something ‘organized’ unlike X-men books) but from an outsider, its convoluted, twisted, too much God damn hokey wholesome cheese writing… NOT that DC books should be ‘dark’ or ‘grim’, but that the CHARACTERS lack REALISTIC SUBSTANCE…. >>>I picked up froma 25cents bin a “Darkest Night” issue of “JSA” -the one where at the end Superman’s body was wearing the black ring… Sooo gay, that story. …’gay’ as in, even a homosexual wearing a supergirl out fit would call that issue gay.

Get rid of the “DRAMA wanna-be cheese dialog” and … its like the MOVIE “OBSERVE and REPORT”:… I know reading this you people probly think that I can float, or even walk on water, but…IM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT>SOMETIMES I DRINK FROM VOLCANO>>DO WHAT MARVEL DID in 99, hire a bunch of independent / underground / raw artists with respect for the DC U history, but more respect for DC’s future…

Aww man. Tim and Steph. :(

Also, from an outsider view, all I see so far is … Super-man wearing a T-Shirt, and now some type collar with his ‘suit’, similar to an an image I saw with Aquaman… -So check it out: I will look more into the DCnU a litte, but ITS GREAT THAT THE UNDERWEAR ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIGHTS HAS BEEN ELIMIATED -I begged for this years ago in newsarama.com before they banned me from their site for calling Peter David and ‘arse-jack’, but I digress… ;-) (I was in a bad place at that time… :o) ) But:

Super-man reboot sounds cool like he’s supposed to be more ‘independent’ and opinionated and less blindly following big brother. Thats awsome, … being opinionated with his SKILZ is a benefit and a curse, especially if he really does have a sensative/caring/selfless side, you know?>THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS…

Wonder woman looks interesting, but if you ask me she should be like the punisher (womder woman) is to captain america (superman). MAKES FOR SOME FRICTION THAT COULD HEAT UP TO SOME LOOOVE.

Batman, should be be first given the impression that he is some schitzo-bipolar emotionally lost mo-fo, and have it develop that he’s actually the most well grounded person who, just like the rest of us, has his ghosts of early life tradgedy, and he just getting over it EXCEPT BEING A GENIOUS BILLIONAIR WITH PRACTICALLY UNLIMTED STAMINA, well, he can get a bit carried away in his own hang-ups UNLIKE the rest of us.

Oh, yeah, also one more thing that I was going to say… about the ‘LOOK': Why would like, Aqua-man have the same type o collar look that Superman does???

The cool thing that I could see them both having in comman, and make for a great friendship, is their IM NOT FROM HERE BUT ILL PROTECT YOU mentality…
They are both from CLASS, they have a ‘blue-blood’ air about them… [ LIKE W-Woman (damn just writing the words WONDER WOMAN seems gay-tarded, but I digress) -so like Diana, now that I think about it AND considering Wayne’s wealth and background, Wayne as well have the blue-blood/skills background BUT>>>] BUT Aquaman and Kal-el are both straight whte men that are not human nor ‘Dark’ like Batman/Wayne, and they are from Other Worlds that are extememly different/ TOTALLY OUT OF BOUNDS of ‘human’ -unlike the Greek Gods like Diana/Wonder Woman who had human ‘faults’ projected onto them.

My POINT IS ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Superman’ should look totally different from eachother, yet both represent the “I AM NOT FROM HERE” type o look, but show it in ‘subltle’ yet cool cutting edge look, kind of way. The type of clothes that look cool and ‘make sense’ but after looking at them for more than a min, you can really see that they are not wearing an ‘outfit’, nor even a ‘uniform’, but just a practical wear that maybe… something someone here would wear but only because they are from the top 1% who run this world and have access to clothes / wear that are super MODERN and not TYPICAL but COOL.

wow aab….lost me when you said that it’s trying to keep up with the X-Men but not convoluted…what have you been reading for the last 20 years?

I like the Superman one, except the colors are wrong on the S shield. My favorite is the JSA though. It’s just so beautiful! Well done everyone!

Are you quite done?

The comments are about the art not what you think of the company or the characters.

With that said, LOVE the Tim and Steph one – probably my favorite of this week’s entries. The JSA/Iwo Jima mashup was inspired. I’m kind of lukewarm on the Powerpuff Girls/Power Girl one. I’m normally a fan of Chaz’s work but this one just didn’t do anything for me. I never thought I’d see a Red Robin image done up like the Dark Knight but it worked and was great. Not a fan of the Milestone characters but the art was good but looked a little bit flat. Caanan’s was funny but, yeah, it’s not atomic unless the undies go over the head.

Great week this week, guys. Can’t wait to see what’s gonna come down the pipes next time!

JM, thanks for the comment,The past year I had been reading some Bendis, Fraction, Brubaker, …some Ellis, and Hickman, and old Gaiman, and Azzarello, as well as Aaron. Please dont be lost JM :-) you can keep up w/it, I know it! :-D -BTW: I have been reading, but not $pending, comics should be under $3.00… >>>HELLO USED BOOK STORES, good-bye ATOMIC COMICS.

Work it JM… dig deep. But this is from an ‘outsider’ looking at the DC, and yeah, drama is cool, but DC is cheese-drama. Sorry, yo. So keep on keep’n on and read alls that I posted, I know you can do it! Especially if you are willing to spend over three dollars on an issues that end up being re-booted to DCnU.

RyokoWerx: I c what yr say’n but if the ‘n’ in DCnU is like… NEW. And that means new readers, … and if a reader is gonna say think ‘Green Lantern and Superman Returns movies were lame, so forget DC… ‘ >>>you are gonna have to have some seriously cutting edge eye-candy to grab $3+ from someone’s wallet /interst for just one issue… The ART IS THE COMPANY… Sequential Story Telling is %99 ART, cuz if the story is lame no NEW user is gonna $pend on it.

I add my entries to instigate thought/awareness that an outsider of DC does CARE but damn if there aint a LOOOONG WAY FOR Time / Warner’s DC to go. I am trying to be constructive and hope that the editors would or writers would respond constructively. My vernacular is what it is tho… yo. PEACE.

Round of applause for AAB, guys. Please, a round of applause.

My own fault for not participating, but I would have liked to see something like Dick Grayson holding Wally West’s body in a Crisis #7 homage.

Or perhaps a Flash #123 homage of Barry running on one side and looking over at Wally on the other side while saying something like “Hey, whatever happened to you?”

Sorry for my colour error guys! Let’s say it was 1am and I had to be up again at 4:30am for a flight to Toronto. I was a little too rushed this week.

And on the subject of Toronto, if anyone’s doing Fan Expo, come by table A40 and say hi. It’s right across from Marvel. Can’t miss it.

Great work guys! I’d comment more in depth but I’m toasted. You all rock anyway, you know that. :)

These are all awesome.

Talented artists. Would love to buy all the line is drawn art as an anthology.

No cassie cain :(
But loved the Iwo Jima one.

Getting Superman’s “S” wrong is not just lazy, it really undermines an already lame joke. Sad

“I am trying to be constructive and hope that the editors would or writers would respond constructively.”

You sure have a lot of specific, in-depth, detailed criticism for somebody from an “outsider’s” perspective. Good luck getting through to the DC editors and writers by posting your thoughts randomly on inappropriate posts in comic book forums.

Wow thank you everyone for all the kind words. This week’s came out amazing and everyone went above and beyond. Dan really nailed his and definitely my favorite for the week.

Caanan’s piece definitely came out at a perfect time with the new Man of Steel not having undies either haha

What up, sean, man? Thanks for the message, but I do not understant what / how exactly you chose ‘random’ … also, how is it this is ‘inappropriate’??? Aaaany wayz, I dont really expect to ‘get through’ to the DC editors and writers, so much as I just want list my opinion and discover more about DC fans, as I learn a bit about DCnU. That was just one of my MANY HOPES…

Danieal, >>> PLEASE: Applause not necessary, just throw MONEY $$$, or issues of ALIAS, or issues of PLANETARY, … issues of SCALPED,… or orignal artwork from the first two volumes of ULTIMATES… or orignal artwork from 100 bullets (!), … or back issues of Allred/Milligan’s X-Force… for starters at least.

HELP ME OUT: how can I post an image?, … can anyone please reccommend a site to use for adding a link /hosting an image so that I can post a cool image I found of Swamp Thang…???

Everyone pulled out the usual hotness we’ve all come to know. So I gotta give it up to Daniel for the sick line art this week. I don’t remember ever seeing him droppin’ this style on us before. Well done, dude! More o’ this, por favor.

Glad you’re feelin’ my piece, Dawnell! Thanks for the crits, Fashion and Ryoko.

I know there’s disappointment with the lack of Cass Cain, but there’s no way I’m saying goodbye to her. Keep her alive in your suggestions and the stars just might align one week or ten…

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Now let’s all hold hands. We’ll get through this Relaunch together. ;]

Peace.

To be fair, people have been getting Superman’s S colors not quite right from time to time since the very beginning. I mean, just look at these early World’s Finest covers: http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/worlds-finest

Compare #3 with #4, or compare his cape’s S on #6 with #25.

But man, every time I look at those old covers it makes me smile.

They are all good. Never could stand the PowerPuff girls, though. I will miss the JSA the most. THey were the class of the DCU.

They were the class of 1940!

I really like the Milestone one and the Red Robin/Batgirl one. The Crimson Fowl Triumphant is definitely cool too.

George Zapata’s image is all kinds of wonderful. Salud.

all in all i think this was a really cool week for everyone. First of all, George takes the cake for being such a STRONG image. Seriously the amount of power in that piece is ridiculous. Love it. Nick did great on his. I love the fragmented panels, it really gives way to so many storytelling possibilities!

Chaz should draw powerpuff girl comics IMMEDIATELY not kidding. Great job, man! Mic absolutely kills it with ANOTHER McDuffie tribute. seriously that would really compliment your previous piece. Also, Caanan: Everytime i see superman’s crest colored that way, i keep thinking about why its not used like that more often! seriously.

Sad to see Red Robin go, thrilled to see those two drawings.
