The Line It Is Drawn #56 – Super-Villain Team-Up!

Go follow Comics Should Be Good on Twitter (if you have Twitter, that is – if you don’t, you can go sign up). Here is our Twitter page… http://twitter.com/csbg. And here are the Comics Should Be Good writers who are on Twitter (the links go to the person’s Twitter account) – myself, Greg Hatcher, Chad Nevett, Kelly Thompson, Sonia Harris Danielle Leigh, Melinda Beasi, Michelle Smith, Bill Reed and Scott!

I update the blog’s Twitter account updates whenever a new post is put up on the blog, so it’s an easy way to keep up with the blog. In addition, I post new content on the blog’s Twitter account.

Now on to the bit!

So every week, I ask a question here. You reply to it on our Twitter page (just write @csbg with your reply) and our SIX blog sketch artists will each pick one of your suggestions and I will post them here every week. So every week you will have a new question and you will see the top six choices from the previous week. Here is an archive of all the previous editions of The Line It Is Drawn!

To qualify, you have to be following us when you reply – so go follow us and then give your answer to the following question/challenge (All suggestions due by 8:00 AM Pacific, Friday, September 9th).

Next week’s theme is…

Courtesy of our own Caanan Grall, Team-up or mash-up a comic book character with a character from a famous Children’s picture book. Catwoman and the Cat in the Hat, Wolverine and Where the Wild Things Are, stuff like that.

Read on for the six sketches that came about courtesy of the last question/challenge!

Pick any two supervillains who have never teamed up before and have them face off against any comic book good guy you like!

I’ll put them in alphabetical order based on the name of the Twitter user who made the suggestion.

Kirby Monsters/Where The Wild Things Are.

These were all great, by the way.

Wait, is that Nick Perks on the Sandman/Freddy/Nemo/Nightmare picture?

Nitzan Rotschild

September 7, 2011 at 6:01 pm

I want a print of that Hello Kitty piece!!!
And the hot dog one’s hilarious. Who is that guy on the left that (I’m assuming) Squirrel Girl is rooting for?

My guess is that Squirrel Girl is there as a bit of a shout out to Mike Shirley.

Haha! I love the way Thanos holds Surfer back. I can just see his little legs flailing about…! :D

It’d be like Magneto holding Wolverine at bay by sticking his hand out on Wolvie’s forehead, while he swipes away at thin air.

Great stuff, guys!

‘Le Chuck Norris.’ :)

Alright, the “Freddy Krueger & Nightmare vs Sandman (Morpheus)” is definitely a Nick Perks. I can tell by the word bubbles.

Here’s his page: http://www.sketchpad.org.uk/

Definitely check out the original short stories.

Magneto and Slade the Terminator vs. X-Men and Teen Titans

Did you just… give a suggestion for last week’s challenge? And in the comments, instead of Twitter?

No-one reads Brian’s preamble… We’re here for the ART! ;)

Caanan Grall’s Hello Kitty picture is pitch perfect. Good week all round.

holy crap! awesome week.
Nick blew me away with that surreal page he concocted. wow. So much to oogle at. Very very cool.

Chaz’s Chuck Norris Kicks ass. Also, trickster and batroc are getting told like the d-list villains they are. Very cool.

I love all the background characters in Mic’s. Little nods here and there to each character’s history.

Sean’s Illustration is just so damn classy. Like Usagi could take Doom and Ra’s on! I believe it.

Caanan makes an adorable scene, showing how fun things can be. I wish there were more ‘cute’ renditions of characters like that.

great job guys.

Great pieces as usual
Love the Squirrel Girl cameo. I’m not sure if anyone knows this, but I’m sort of a fan of her.
Love the Little Nemo, Corinthian, and various other Sandmen in Nick’s piece.
Chaz again delivers with the funny. I remember the Karate Kommandos comic and toon
Caanan’s Catwoman is too precious for words
Sean’s Doom rocks
and you have to love when the artists take that extra step to give us a little story with the art

I LOVE IT WHEN MY SUGGESTIONS ARE USED. Thanks so much you guys. Did way better than I could have ever imagined!

Great suggestion with the Hot Dog Eating contest and a great job by Mic for adding on to it. Gotta love the Joey Chesnut appearance.

I really like the last 2 of these.

How bout circulating this idea in the artist’s and writer’s thread?

Groot as the Giving Tree
Kirby Monsters and Grover from Sesame Street in “The Monster at the End of this Book” (in which, the monster at the end of the book is not in fact Grover)
The Power Pack as the kids in the Cat in the Hat

Wolverine and the very hungry caterpillar

Canaan Grail is great and Apokolips is spelled Apokolips. not trying to nitpick here; i genuinely can’t imagine how someone could do that much work on a very nice piece and then botch the spelling.

C’mon, folks…

Re-posted ‘cuz I really wanna see Bobby and Jack’s ideas fleshed out. Heh.

Good batch. I particular like the Sandman piece by The Artist Presumably Known as Nick Perks.

Brian, you know you haven’t actually said in the post who the artists are for the Sandman and Chuck Norris pieces, yes? I mean, we can tell who it is, but credit where credit is due.

Thanos and Darkseid have certainly met–heck, they’ve even been amalgamated–but I guess they haven’t “teamed up” per se.

It is Nick Perks! The word bubbles, THE WORD BUBBLES!!!!

Alright! I admit it! It’s me! …Who did Sandman, that is. (Can’t believe I was given away by my word bubbles…)

…And I REALLY can’t believe anyone has actually read my original short stories.

Quantum mechanics indicate that it is both Nick Perks and not Nick Perks until proper credit is given.

Schrödinger’s Credit, yes.

Chaz and Nick need no introduction, two pretty distinctive styles (and not just due to the word bubbles).

Big fan of everyone’s as usual… I mean puking Venom? Can’t go wrong. Surfer is in trouble, not only is he going up against two of the biggest guns in comics, but Thanos knows of his super vulnerability- the double arm bar!!! You just been T’Challa’d!

I love the Hello Kitty… far more than I should.

Sorry, Chad and Nick! Your intros have returned. While bringing the intros over, I obviously must have thought I had yours but did not.

Thank ya, Brian. I’m a stickler for credit. Even others (obviously).

This is, of course, whether they need no introduction or not. Any possibility of an instance of misinformation should be squashed immediately.

Sweet! Finally got a suggestion in, and it was the silliest one I could think of volunteering. Thanks Mic? for all the little extras that made my idea actually look like a good one. Squirrel Girl rooting for Joey Chestnut? BRILLIANT! Out of the others, I think my favorite this week was the Sandman vs. Nightmare and Krueger, but the Hello Kitty is creepily cute.

The appearance of the fish and plate from Paul Grist’s ‘Jack Staff’ in the Sandman piece made me very happy.

May I suggest Moon Knight and the classic “Goodnight, Moon”?

Sure you can, Nathan, just get a Twitter account and suggest away.

Hey gang! It’s a-me! Sijo-oh! :P Hurricane Irene damaged my computer went it hit Puerto Rico, and I only got it back from the shop this week. Couldn’t wait to see this column again! But don’t worry, I had plenty of Sijo chips (with Chaz chili ;) ) to munch on in the meantime! :D

So, did I miss anything?

OK, now to snark- err, I mean, review- this week’s offerings!

Hmm. Mic’s piece doesn’t do much for me. Maybe because I have never heard of this particular contest (and I find the whole eating-till-you-barf idea disgusting anyway.) Nice art though.

Ohh, Nick Perk’s piece is beautiful (as usual). Btw, I always thought this was obvious but when Gaiman did his version of Sandman, he was obviously ripping off Marvel’s Nightmare, yet everyone acts like he was sooo original (Marvel did, in fact, try to capitalize on this by making Nightmare more “Emo” for a while, but it didn’t take.)

Chaz’s entry gets the rare, “Where did they come up with that one” award. :P But fun!

And Canaan’s s once is again, the cutest one (I really like when he does these the best.) Heck, Hello Kitty is the LEAST charming one in there!

Funny Animals are just not as- funny- when drawn more realistic, I feel, and Sean’s piece proves it. Sorry!

Daniel’s piece is the opposite of Chaz’s- so utterly expected. THAT said, I’d buy that comic in an instant! ;)

Once again, thanks to everybody for the ideas and art!

I always figured Sam Keith’s Sandman was basically just Robert Smith with a pasty Gaiman face.

Gotta love Nick doing bonus sketches. Can’t wait to see it

Excellent pieces, fellas! I love Nick‘s sketch steez. Chaz kicks ass more than Chuck to me. That is officially one of my fave TLIID illos EVER, Caanan. I love how Usagi gutted Ra’s and moved up to the next boss, Sean! Daniel knocked it outta the park w/ fresh sequentials!

Glad you digs my “Free Kobi!” piece, Nitzan, Daniel, Big Mike, Astro, and Sean!

Big shout-out to ArghantBigAxe for the suggestion! I had an instant idea when I first laid eyes on it and ran w/ it! Glad you got the Squirrel Girl and Chestnut connection! hahah
